Say we do finish with the 7th or 8th I really don't see who would want to trade down with us. Even if you are giving up 8th, say 27th from Boston, 2nd round pick and a prospect. Are any of the other organizations with the top picks in such good position that they don't want one of these top guys? I don't really think so nor do I think it would be worth giving up that many more assets to move up 5 spots.

If we're 7th or 8th we hope someone falls. Trading down from the fringe of the top 8 is not worth it to me.

Outside of the top 6/7, there's not gonna be much value or interest there. Hell, two years in a row, the 8th overall pick was traded mostly almost as a throw-in.

Doubt we move up into that group if we're not there to begin with.

i think the concept of the eric lindros overall #1 pick and subsequent trade qualifies. i bet av's fans think so anyway.

Even if we finish 6th I don't really think its worth it to try and trade up. Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Nichushkin, Lindholm all are (in my opinion) franchise players. If we are sitting at 6 and looking at Lindholm I'd rather we take him, than give up the amount of assets other teams are going to want to have to move up to get Jones or MacKinnon.

At four there are options up or down. After seven I'm going to be hugely disappointed if we end up there. God that's a terrible no man's land and I'm not sure what we'd have to give up to move up from there.

Buffalo, Tampa, and Carolina all look like they'll end up taking us out. That'd put us at 4th overall. Florida has a small chance of getting ahead of us. Colorado and Calgary are tanking to the max, no way we get ahead of them.

I'm perfectly fine at 4th overall though. Barkov is exactly who I've wanted this whole time.

I'd be alright with Sasha at 4- would prefer Nathan MacKinnon though

Each time I think about the draft I flip flop between Johnny D and Mac.

We should aim for that 2nd tier of top 8 guys and be happy we're at least in that mix.

I really wouldn't be opposed to snagging Nichushkin if we're at 7 or 8.

Oleksiak-Jones could be an even better duo than Suter-Weber or Keith-Seabrook. Plus, as soon as next season, you'd have a 19 year old and 21 year old duo that could potentially play 15 or more seasons together. It just might be worth the huge risk involved.
I'm really hesitant to trade this team's 1st round pick next year. The chances that we're equally as bad next year are decent and that makes it too big of a risk IMO. If you are starting at #5 you may as well stay there if it costs so much to move up, especially given the quality that is supposed to be sitting there waiting for you at that spot.

If Jones is just the best defenseman out of this draft you don't make that trade. I suppose you have to consider it more strongly if your scouts think he is an absolute stud.

Yeah- we shouldn't trade our 2014 1st. If we don't snag a defenseman in 2013 then we can shoot for Ekblad in 2014

It will be 3-4 years before we can reliably trade our first rounder without damaging the organization.

I would not be surprised to see us trade up if we wind up with the 3rd-5th overall pick. In fact, at that point I'd almost expect it. Getting a #1 defenseman who is from Dallas would be something that appeals to all aspects of the franchise. If we are 3rd-5th I don't think we'd have to add the 2014 1st either. You could get it done with 3-5 + 27-30th + 2nd rounders and prospects.

doesnt that seem like alot to give up for someone who might have a slightly higher impact than the centers available?

I'm not saying you'd have to give up all that to move up. In '03 (with no clear cut #1) 1 + 73 was moved for 3 + 55 + meh defenseman. Jones has more hype than Fleury did so I could see 1 for 3 +27 working.

Good luck getting that pick away from Colorado if they end up with it.
I wouldn't trade up for Jones the price is going to be too expensive.
If there's a certain center the Stars think is much better sure trade up a spot or two for him, the price is going to be much less.

Yeah, this is definitely dependent on the Avs not getting the top spot. I wouldn't give up what it would take for the Avs to move down. I think it would work out with Florida, Buffalo, TB, Carolina and maybe Calgary

Definitely not.

I know Jones is rated #1 by most services but I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the two Canadian forwards taken first, possibly even 1 and 2 leaving Jones there at #3. I'm just now starting to really look into these players in this year's draft but there seems to be a solid top 7 maybe 8. One name I see high on the Euro list that I never even see mentioned around here is Ristolainen. He's a tall, right shot, offensively minded defenseman. If he's the consolation prize we get at 8 then I can be happy with that.

Really though, there just seems to be so much talent at the top of the draft that it would be more beneficial to take whoever we can and then use the rest of the picks we gathered to get some good players. I don't see the point in blowing your wad all at once. At that point the expectations become almost impossible for Jones to fulfill before fans turn on him. And as badly as we need a #1 defenseman let's not act like we've got the offense part of this team taken care of by any stretch. If we can add an elite offensive talent without giving anything else up that's a no-brainer.

I would also add that I really hope we add a couple of Swedes with the Boston pick and one of our other 2nd rounders, especially a defenseman given the D-factory Sweden has become.

Highly doubtful.
