He has his moments. He is a patient man with his prospects, he sure isn`t aggressive for his trades.

would be happy with it, or if couts is available.

I found it kind of interesting with the trade deadline. For Bishop, Ottawa asked for Couts (from someone within the conference straight up) but Philly declined. But then Ottawa ended up trading him to Tampa (who will be in the same division as the Sens next year) for basically just Conacher. I think this gives us a better idea of how GMs value Couts.

Well he's definitely highly valued among that group. However it seems like the crew also likes scott laughton...If there is a sweepstakes of some sort of couts in the summer, I'd hope we are in the top of that list.

Trade Grabbo, resign Bozak (to reasonable $$$$), trade for Brooks Laich, and obtain a true power forward to play with Kadri. Leafs then look pretty good down the middle with Kadri, Bozak, Laich, and McClemment.

Leafs need to upgrade their defense more than their forwards.

Fraser and Kostka need upgrades. No problem if they re-sign them for depth but way too much time for them.

Hopefully O'Byrne is an upgrade over Kostka.

I think (hope) that's a given based on his NHL experience and his familiarity with Liles.

He is UFA, but so is Kostka.

I like Fraser's toughness.

If O'Bryne is an improvement on Kostka for the rest of the year it would be good.

Latest article on the leafs new addition

Thought I could take a look at some factors that might shine a light on where he fits.

....the Leafs have four defensemen to use as needed: Kostka, Liles, Gardiner and O’Byrne. From among these four, two will form the second pair and two will be in the press box on any given night. We don’t yet know who Carlyle will prefer to play, but there are three potential factors to O’Byrne’s advantage in getting more playing time.

Nonis was Vancouver's GM for 3 seasons and made one of the biggest trades in franchise history during his tenure. Hardly qualifies as afraid to make the big move IMO

I introduce to you Paul Ranger.

As well as a more mature Jake Gardiner and our top prospect Morgan Rielly.

Will Paul Ranger want to play in the NHL and is he mentally up for it?

I'm not sure I'd put a lot of faith in Ranger.

Good for him to put his own personal well being above money.

We really need a big, young, two-way defenseman to add to the core of this team.

Why go after Brooks Laich when we have Joe Colborne? Just seems like a waste of money and a roster spot to go after Laich.

Let MacA walk and sign Clarkson with that money(I'm a big MacA fan, but Clarkson brings a lot more to the game IMO)
Try to sign Bozak to a nice 3.5 mil a year contract

What dmen are available in the summer that could play big minutes with Dion?

Here are the UFA dmen this summer:

Not sure if any would be a good fit with Dion.

is big Joe ready for the NHL? Laich is a proven NHL centre, Colborne might need more time to develope?

Ranger would be a huge addition to this team though and aside from being a lefty would fit the description of exactly the type of dman this team needs.

I hope Nonis adds Ranger and also signs a #4/5 dman like a Regehr, White, Hainsey, Scuderi, Leopold to a 1 or 2 year deal to give us extra depth to trade because dmen that are capable of playing 20 minutes are always a hot commodity once every season gets started.

This would also allow Nonis to continue to patiently develop Gardiner, Rielly, Holzer, Blacker, etc.

Need?

The Leafs need a C that has the ability to generate offense with Kessel and JVR.

How many primary assists does boz have on the lines 30 g pace JVR? 1, none?

I can't recall in my 40 years, seeing a 30g winger receive so few primary's from his C half way into a season.

Kessel on pace for 20 g, is unacceptable, he is a 40g talent.

I think Fraser has been very effective in his role. He's only averaging 16 minutes a night and has been on the 3rd pairing pretty much all season. There should be no expectations that he can play in the top 4 effectively, but id like to see him resigned so that he can continute to provide quality D in the role he's been given.

We do need a decent upgrade over Kostka though. We need another legitimate top pairing D on our blueline, preferably RH. I dont see Kostka as a guy around for the longterm.
