I am wavering on this. I just don't think we can afford to have Gagne at $2M playing 4LW and 13 minutes/game. For that we can bring up Wellwood.

The Flyers are going to be tight on the cap next year, we're going to have to scrimp on the lower lines.

That said, sign Adam Hall to a friggin' extension for $800K right now. Nice raise. Born Flyer.

While I agree Streit is not good at all in his own end the past few years. Coburn hasn't been having a good season, but I find him to be under rated around these parts. Streit will cost almost the same as Coburn, and the Coburns defense over Streits is more than enough to over come the offensive difference. Though there are other defensemen I'd rather have Streit than. I think I'd like a pairing of Coburn and Streit.

A more realistic option.

Buyout Bryz and Briere
Trade Laughton for Bernier
Draft Nurse
Resign gagne and hall

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Simmonds-Schenn-Read
Gagne-Couturier-McGinn
Rinaldo-Hall-Talbot

Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Nurse
Grossmann-Meszaros

Bernier
Mason

Yeah, I was really stoked on his performance last night. It was one game, but if he plays like that every night, I'd be more than happy to give him an extension.

eh..Gagne is probably still like 35-40 point forward. Wellwood is a 20-25 point forward....in the AHL. If they resign Gagne it should be for the 3rd line, not the 4th. If they're going to play him on the 4th line then there's not really a reason to sign him.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see something like this

Matt Read ($0.900m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Simon Gagne ($2.000m) / Scott Laughton ($1.138m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m)
Ben Holmstrom ($0.600m) / Adam Hall ($0.800m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m)
Tye McGinn ($0.775m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.000m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Keith Yandle ($5.250m) / Braydon Coburn ($4.500m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m)
Bruno Gervais ($0.825m) /
GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.667m)
Steve Mason ($2.000m)

Couturier traded with next year's 1st for Yandle

Sadly, I think couturier gets traded this summer

If the Flyers are fortunate (??) enough to end up with Nurse, I don't want to see him in the starting line-up for at least a year. May I suggest plugging Gustafsson in?

I added all that up - $63.89m. Hopefully Mason is more like $1.5m to give them a little more room.

I also don't like that Yandle trade, but it is plausible.

I can't see Mez here next year. Makes too much. Too brittle. Replaced by Gus/Manning/Lauridsen

You dont want to ruin a young player, ESPECIALLY a defenseman, just to see him in the lineup.

Realistically I don't want to see him on the team until getting some seasoning for a year or two.

The rumored deal Maloney was looking for from the Flyers for Yandle was Couturier, Read, 1st and 2nd rd pick for Yandle +. Knowing Maloney, that plus wasn't anything thing great. Holmgren should stay far away from the Coyotes, at least until they have an owner that wants to win something.

I agree, though I wouldn't necessarily call it a sad thing. Everyone talks about Homer's poor asset management, but dealing an asset for a top end defenseman sounds like a good plan to me.

honestly, if we're trading couturier to the coyotes, i'd MUCH rather it be for Gormley+ than Yandle...

We flat out need to trade one of our centers for D it's stupid not to. That trade should never happen. That would be one of those trades that gets ridiculed for some time. We should be dealing from strength and that is second pair D and young stud centers. The new guys playing on D look great so far and if they keep it up I'd be ok on unloading. Couburn and mez

Agreed. I think it's better asset management to get two for one instead of giving up a ton of players for an overrated offensive defensemen. That rumored package should be for a top all around defensemen not a specialist. That being said, I would rather not trade Couturier at all. If the Flyers 1st rd pick is outside the top 8, I would rather move that than Couturier for a good young defenseman. Does the 12th overall plus Read get Shattenkirk? Does Laughton + 12th overall since they need centers?

the thing is, Yandle is what he is at this point. he's a good puck mover and a decent PP QB, but he leaves something to be desired as far as decision making in his own zone. He's a glorified Matt Carle to be honest.

Gormley is still young, and imho, has top pairing potential. He's not as prolific offensively as yandle is, but he has the ability to be a more well rounded defenseman.

trading a 20 year old with as high a ceiling as couturier for a defenseman who's 26 and probably has reached what he's going to be at this point is counter productive for a team built around youth. Let's look at our defensemen.

Timonen - 38
Huskins - 33
Foster - 31
Gervais - 28
Grossmann - 28
Coburn - 28
Meszaros - 27
Gustafsson - 24
Lauridsen - 24
Schenn - 23

Schenn, who IMO is rounding into a good shut down top 4 guy is our youngest at 23, which is good for this team to have right now, but unless our defense gets younger to match our core up front with Giroux, Schenn, Couturier, Voracek, Simmonds, Laughton, Rinaldo etc. our window becomes skewed. If we can subtract a valuable piece from that core and add a defenseman around the same age to balance things out, we'll be in a better position to grow as a team IMO.

Next year, you figure our base lineup to build off of will be this. (i'd resign Gagne, Hall and Huskins, and waive Gervais)

Hartnell (31) - Giroux (25) - Voracek (24)
Simmonds (25) - Schenn (22) - Read (27)
Gagne (33) - Couturier (20) - Laughton (19)
Rinaldo (23) - Hall (33) - Talbot (29)

Timonen (38) - Schenn (23)
Coburn (28) - Grossmann (28)
Gustafsson (24) - Huskins (33)

7 under 25 up front
2 under 25 on the blue line

Now, trade Couturier, Coburn and a 2nd to PHX for Gormley and Rundblad

Hartnell (31) - Giroux (25) - Voracek (24)
Simmonds (25) - Schenn (22) - Read (27)
Gagne (33) - Laughton (19) - McGinn (23)
Rinaldo (23) - Hall (33) - Talbot (29)

Timonen (38) - Schenn (23)
Rundblad (23) - Grossmann (28)
Gormley (21) - Huskins (33)

7 under 25 on offense
3 under 25 on defense (4 if you replace Huskins with Gustafsson)

That lineup looks a lot better for the future than the former IMO.

I don't understand the why people think the Flyers need to give up Couturier to land a prospect like Gormley. Gormley has been pretty underwhelming in his first AHL season. Giving up Couturier for him would be a mistake.
I would probably think about the 2nd for Rundblad tho.

Would you trade couturier for a guy like Ryan Murray if the jackets were willing?

And do you really believe a 2nd would get you Rundblad? I don't.
