They didn't want to give it up because they have no first.

I know that they can use that 2nd round pick in a trade, I alluded to either adding the 2nds to Pominville to get a bigger return or trading the 2 2nds for an established NHL player.I'm merely stating that 2015 is a few years away and if we do end up keeping the pick, that player might not even be ready 5 years from now, just a long time to be waiting on the return for Regehr.I'm not upset at the return, just wish we didn't have to wait a few years to see results from the trade.

Agreed, this seems most logical to me.

Good move, value for a rental. Don't think he'll be back though. Thank your for your time Regehr!

I'm not sure why the assumption is that all the 2nd round picks that are being accumulated are only for "ammo to move up". I've seen it said over and over on every forum. Just because it was done to land Girgensons last year?

The major offseason trade was Roy who was a second round pick.
The current 1-A trade bait is Pominville who was a second round pick.
Two of the players I've seen most coveted by Sabres fans as return for such a trade are Brandon Saad and Tyler Toffoli who were second round picks.

I'm fine with simply drafting players with these 2nd rounders. Sure, it takes a while to develop but if you neglect the pipeline in hockey, as in business, there are consequences. If you're tearing down a dilapidated loser of a structure, build it back up with a solid foundation instead of just plastering over the gaping cracks.

It's because he's got so many of them. Yes, he could just hold on to them all and draft, but when you've got a stockpile of them it becomes real easy to use them elsewhere.

We have done well drafting 2nd rounders but as others have mentioned, if the rebuild is occuring but GMDR is focusing on next season, I think some of the picks are in play to move up/hockey trade. A 2014 second round pick probably doesn't even sniff the NHL until 2017 at least. And it's not that likely that we are going to get a ROR from that pick. I hope that we have a proper rebuild, though and not attempt a "quick fix" that ultimately fails.

Sabres History with 2nd Round picks:

Quote:
2012
Jake McCabe - Defense
Top Pair D-man for Wisconsin and Captain of WJC U-20 Team USA, played with J. Schultz and Seth Jones.
Currently Projected: 3-4 Responsible in all zones Defensman

2011
N/A

2010
N/A

2009
N/A

2008
Luke Adam - Center/Wing
Showed early promise, including being apart of a Canadian WJC U-20 team. Won AHL ROY award, but has regressed ever since. Recently called back up to the Sabres, seems to be make it or break it time for him in the organization.
Currently Projected: 3rd/4th Line Scoring Center/Wing

2007
TJ Brennan - Defenseman
Traded to Florida for a 2013 5th Round Pick
Current Projection: PP specialist

Drew Schiestel - Defenseman
Was on a good upward projection until derailed by a knee injury. Now, most likely will be let go at the end of the year
Current Projection: Career AHL Defenseman

2006
Jhonas Enroth
Quality backup goaltender. Has developed well within the organization and seems to be settled in his role. There is starting potential, but not someone you'd really want to count on for 50-60 games.
Current Projection: solid NHL backup

Mike Weber
Has been a decent bottom pairing defender for the Sabres. Not flashy, little offense, but a decent stay at home defenseman.
Current Projection is a 5-7 Defenseman

2005
Phillip Gogulla
Never made it to the NHL, and after only a short time in the AHL, decided to head back home to Germany. No longer with the Sabres
Current Projection: N/A (No Longer with team)

2004
Michael Funk
Played sparingly. Never a big factor. Now retired after being concussed by Kaleta in a practice.
Current Projection: Retired

2003
Branislav Fabry
Depth player who stayed in Europe. Now playing in Kazakhstan. No longer in the organization.
Current Projection: Bust/No Longer With Team

2002
N/A

2001
Derek Roy - Center
Top 6 player traded for Steve Ott & Adam Pardy. Solid all around player. Has some character issues but there's no doubt about his hockey skills.
Current Projection: Top 6 Center

Chris Thorburn - Center
Depth player now for Winnipeg. Brings grit to the lineup. Waived by Buffalo and picked up by Pitt, was eventually traded to ATL/WPG for a 3rd Round Pick
Current Projection: Bottom 6 NHL Depth forward

Jason Pominville - Wing
Top line player for the Sabres. Performed best in a supporting role. Current Captain of the team, consistent 60+ point player. 20+ goals in the past 6 seasons. Coming off of a 30 goal, 73 point season last year
Current Projection: Top 6 Winger

2000
Gerard Dicaire - Defense
Never signed by the Sabres. Drafted again by Tampa 5th Round 2002
Current Projection: N/A, No longer playing hockey
So after seeing the Sabres 2nd round picks since 2000, how do you feel?

I feel like anyone we draft has a 10% chance of ending up playing for the Cologne Sharks.

Kings fan in peace.

Regehr played for us tonight and was a definite difference maker with the third star and an assist.

We have been missing two big defenders all year and Regehr will fit right in with the Kings.

Thanks, and good luck you guys are still in the hunt!

Makes me feel bad that people feel compelled to preface cross-board posts with this.

I figured he would do good in LA, those type of players seem to thrive under Sutter. I only watched the first half the game but he did his job quite well.
