They can swap 2 of the 3rd rounders for a 2nd. The Rangers traded just one of the 3rds. Keep the other 3rd. Edmonton was scouting the Rangers hard for the last week leading up to the deadline. Craig MacTavish. Depending upon where Edmonton finishes, maybe they move their pick for someone like DZ. Top 7 pick. The Rangers see a player they like in that range and they feel that player can contribute right away, maybe they make it immediately. They get 3 years of a cap friendly deal. Philly has moved players for young players to alleviate cap issues. Umberger to Columbus for first round pick(Sbisa). Carter for 8th pick overall(Couturier),Voracek and another high pick. Richards for Schenn,Simmonds and a 2nd.

SJ signs UFA Eriah Hayes. RW had 20 goals for Minnesota State in senior year. Two-year deal, two-way, not entry level. Too old, 25 in July.
Hayes to SJ

I am not enamored with this years UFA class. And I didn't realize Hayes is 25.

I guess that since Gilroy, I am fearful of these older college players. 22 is pretty old. 24-25? Should he not dominate NCAA?

Jed Ortmeyer was an older college player that turned out to have an ok NHL career. at least he made it.. for every Jed Ortmeyer type and stiff like Tommy Grant type but if your lucky you have someone like Matt Read

At 24 Matt Read had 22 goals, 35 points in 37 games for Bemidji. Stats can really be deceiving with NCAA guys.

I think when you look at the circumstances, he kept up with the best of them on a team where he was one of the few upperclassman playing minutes. Minny State went mostly with their underclassmen.

He had the same amount of points as Nick Bjugstad who played on a deeper team. 28 of his 41 games he scored points. 13 PP goals was 2nd in nation to Cary's 14. And he progressed every year since his draft eligible year.

All good signs, and I obviously trust quite a few of you guys around here, but is he better than MZA who is about the same age? Do you think he is better than Hrivik? Kreider? Miller? Thomas?

Better? He's a prospect, not sure how I'd compare him to pro players playing in a much different league, or at the same age at various programs/levels. I can only tell you what he is right now. He's been a very good player in the USHL and College, progressing every year. As a prospect, IMO, project 6'4 power forward. He might be better suited on the RW as a pro, but I'd give him a shot at Center first, those are way harder to find.

FWIW....Undrafted QMJHL forward/Captain Josh Currie of the PEI Rocket is apparently drawing a lot of interest from NHL teams...albeit that was what his camp is selling in a story in our local newspaper today . He finished near the top in league scoring and has more than doubled his points total from 20-46-104 over the last 3 seasons and from -22 last year to a +26 this season . Fair to say...a real late bloomer . He certainly carried the Rocket on his back most of the season...

Where do folks think Patrick Mullane will end up?

He was Boston College's Captain this season...I thought he would already be signed since he was a senior. He looked good a few years ago at Capitals Development camp.

Potential Rangers fit?

Last I heard he was planning on returning for his Senior year to finish his major, and play with his younger brother for a season.

I feel like this was the right offseason to go pro, but I don't blame him at all for wanting to lock up his degree. Will be interesting to see how he does without his pivot of the last 3 years next season.

Barber is only one name they passed on, I could give you at least 15 players drafted after Calle Andersson that look like 1st or 2nd rounders this past season. I do my homework, yet every time I bring the info its 'hindsight'. Was it hindsight 4 years ago when I was talking about some kid named Schmidt who'd make a great mid round pick?
What was his injury?

Just a junior, stats dipped this year as Cornell's defense was brutal. Iles played a ton, pretty consistent save percentage. He's still very undersized for a goalie 5'10" but he's one of, if not the best technically in all of college hockey. I'm hoping the Rangers try to sign him after next season.

Correct. Cornell's defense was really really young and Cornell typically only plays one goalie during the season. I think he'll bounce back next year. Cornell is the school where you graduate. This is mostly because they don't get a lot of the top end college talent.

I'm hesitant with Iles because I think that a lot of Cornell's goalies are hidden in their defensive system, a little like Phoenix. Scrivens proved me wrong (I didn't think he'd be more than a back up for the Marlies) hopefully Iles can too.

Maybe we'll be able to snag this player in the 3rd round. Would love to have him. He can score, high energy and loves to scrap. Definitely a "Torts" kind of player and I'm sure Gordie and Gorton like him too. He's not a secret since he was draft eligible for 2011 and a lot of teams have seen him at the WJC, but you never know. Saw this on the Hockeywriters.com site.

JC Lipon Kamloops WHL RW 6'0" 181 lbs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=QDPI4U2IlPs

Straka plays with Noreau in Baie-Comeau. I'm sure the Rangers have seen him plenty.

Wow, poor CBJ - he absolutely tanked after his draft year for two years, so they let him go un-signed... and then he busts out for 1.5PPG over 55 games and improves from a -9 to a +33.

Going by the stats, he'd certainly be a nice get. As I recall, he had fans on this board during his draft year.

Doing that at age 20 in the Q isn't necessarily always a promise of success, but the recent spike in production could indicate something of a coming of age in the player's development.
