I agree. He has had his moments this year but he has also taken a major step back in terms of his ability to keep up with the play and to compete game in and game out.

I am not sure what will happen the rest of this year, but I honestly think they have to have the talk with him at the end of the year. He can't play above the 4th line anymore with any constistency and next year there will be no room at the inn.

While the honorable thing to do might appear be to let him retire and give him a job in the organization, a compliance buyout saves cap space and gives him a nice parting gift.

The simpliest thing the Oilers can do, as far as the forwards, go with 4 centers, Nuge, Gagner, Horcoff and Smithson, keep the kid line and Gagner's line together, pair Horcoff and Yakupov and rotates Jones, Smyth, Hartikainen, Brown, Petrell and Lander through those other 3 wing positions, obviously depending on preformance and need.

It would be nice to get Hartikainen in too. Harski lacks consistancy but he's also one of the best players on the ice at times.

I like Ryan Smyth around the Oilers, in the lineup every night is another story. He has a level of craftiness in his boardwork and in front of the net that all the young players can learn from as they develop and round out their games.

He is a leader and I can only imagine a positive presence in the dressing room that probably can't be quantified. I could see him being used as a spare forward next year and retire at the end of next season when we have better players in our bottom six that push him out.

We already have better players in our bottom 6 to push him off... He may win a roster spot at the start of next season... but will have nothing left in tank a couple months in... He should retire after this season...

This all sounds about right... If it is me, I'd invite him back as our 12th-B forward. Meaning he's the 12th forward any 2 nights of the week he wants. And put him on the second powerplay (still amazes me we aren't using him for his skill in front... perhaps he's too banged up to take the abuse).

In between those games he can PB and be a good mentor/teacher.

But if he stays, then Jones & Petrell have to go. We can't afford to have so many guys with limited grit and limited hockey sense in the bottom 6. If it isn't a Pisani type (no banging, but solid defensively with excellent hockey sense), then it better be a Torres/Grier type (pain to play against and half decent offensively).

What ever happened to the Mike Ricci types? It seems like forever since we developed a solid checker for our team! (suppose that's what happens when you don't have a farm team)

Sadly it is a column A and column B situation.

Ah yes... Smyth for Fraser. Who here can say that at the time they knew we were losing that trade?

13th forward - retirement - or buy-out.

Management needs to have an honest discussion with him after the season.

If he will accept playing 30-40 games, he can stay as the 13th man. If that's too embarrassing - then buy him out. If that's too embarrassing, he can retire on his own terms.

Serious question: do you think players take Steve "30-30-29-2?" Tambellini seriously when he tells them anything about hockey? Is there anyone in the NHL who's going to double their effort after that pep talk?

The thing is if he plays or retires he eats the same cap space. If we buy him out he still costs 750k in cap space. lose / lose
In all three he contributes roughly the same value to the team. At least if he retired he could stop destroying whatever legacy he has left.

I can garuntee you what "his own terms" are going to be.

Its already in black & white.

And I can't even hate on Tambellini for this one. I honestly believed Smitty had one more good run in him last summer.

In fact...I was peeved it took as long as it did to get this current contract settled.

For all we know...Oilers may have been wanting to move on altogether but felt obligated to bring back "Captain Canada."

Either way...its ugly at this point and the best we can hope for is that he magically recovers some semblance of NHL abilities for next season.

I'm surprised that we haven't seen any Kings fans chiming in here. They warned us.

Maybe Colin Fraser was a better hockey player than we thought he was?

I thought he was rendered useless by the end of last season. When they signed him this summer to a two year contract I couldn't believe it. It was obvious he was no longer a top 6 player, and I thought his spot in the bottom six could be be better filled by someone with grit.
