Flyers Sign Mark Alt to an ELC; signed as ATO with Adirondack (AHL)

April 7, 2013:

Quote:
FLYERS INK ALT
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced that the club has signed 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman Mark Alt from the University of Minnesota to an entry-level contract today.

The 21-year-old Alt posted seven points, all assists and 20 penalty minutes, including a career-best plus-minus rating of +19 in 39 games for the Golden Gophers this season. He helped the team post an overall record of 26-9-5 and finish first in the WCHA standings, as well as the second-ranked defense in the WCHA, allowing 2.29 goals-per-game.

Over the course of three seasons at Minnesota, Alt posted seven goals and 32 assists for 39 points and 85 penalty minutes in 117 games, which also included a trip to the NCAA's Frozen Four in 2012, which was the team's first appearance since the 2005 season.

“It has been an honor to play for the Gophers for the last three years,” said Alt on Gophersports.com, Minnesota's athletic website. “I want to thank the fans, my teammates and coaches for making it such a great experience. I will forever cherish my days in the Maroon and Gold.”

The rights to Alt were acquired by the Flyers prior to the start of the season in deal that also saw goaltender Brian Boucher return to the team from the Carolina Hurricanes, in exchange for Luke Pither on January 12.

Alt was the Hurricanes second-round pick (53rd overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Defenseman Mark Alt has signed with the Philadelphia Flyers. Alt was a junior with the University of Minnesota this season.
https://twitter.com/WeissFC

We picked him up in the Boucher trade by trading Pither for the both of them.

Here was a semi-recent scouting report on him

http://www.shutdownline.com/hurrican...-mark-alt.html

Quote:
The one thing no one ever doubted about Alt is that he is a terrific athlete and possesses a pretty big frame at 6'3" and 202 lbs. He's been able to use this frame to become an effective, physical shutdown defenseman for the Golden Gophers during his time there. He began to play a much bigger role last season as he was used heavily on Minnesota's penalty kill and was also trusted with playing tougher assignments than their other defense pairings. Alt was also second on the team in blocked shots (51) and was very effective at making things difficult for opposing forwards.
Figured I'd make it's own thread since it's closely rumored that Gostisbehere will stay one more season in college.

#Flyers sign Minn. D Mark Alt. Gut feeling: Makes it more certain that Flyers won't sign #UnionHockey D Gostisbehere this year.

Kind of surprising, Carolina fans kind of saw him as a nothing prospect when we got him with Boucher if I recall. Maybe I'm mistaken? It sounds like he has potential to be a bottom pairing shutdown guy, AHL-tweener

I assume he joins the phantoms next season. Maybe he'll even get an ATO soon. From what I understand he regressed a little this yr so maybe making the jump to pros w/ better training staff will do him some good. He's a long shot but we got him for pither if I'm not mistaken who really had no future in the organization so I like this

Sounds like he has the athleticism to be kinda like Coburn...doubt he has anywhere near that skill though.

According to Andrew Weiss, the Flyers have signed University of Minnesota defenseman Mark Alt.

Alt (21) was acquired in the Brian Boucher trade during Flyers training camp. The junior had seven assists in 39 games this season. He had five goals and 17 assists the season before.

Hockey's Future ranks him the second best defensive prospect in the Flyers system with a seven rating and a C probability of success.

Here's a scouting report on the 6' 4" 201 pound defenseman from HF: Alt was a two-sport star in high school, as he led Cretin-Derham to a state title as a quarterback in football. The son of former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Jon Alt, he was entertaining offers to play football in college until late in the spring, when he committed to playing hockey at the University of Minnesota. Like his father, Alt is a tall man but despite his height is a fluid skater who has good speed and agility. Having not yet played at a higher level of hockey, he is still raw in terms of tactical play and positioning but is a strong two-way player according to scouts who've seen him play.

I'm glad we're giving Ghost at least one more year to develop in college. I'd like to see him transition directly from college to the NHL as to avoid our defenseman graveyard in Adirondack.

John Alt was a very good football player. Very nimble for a 6'7" lineman. I hope this kid got the good genes.

Actually I kind of remember a lot of people being surprised that Alt was included. Not that he was very highly touted but he was still an intriguing talent, just really raw.

I would imagine this seals Sullentrop's fate also. Flyers usually sign their non-NCAA guys after the draft or after their first season after being drafted so I guess it should be no surprise.

Kimmo can't play tomorrow so Alt steps in.

You heard it here first.

Been saying it for a while.

I'm guessing he's on an ATO and his ELC kicks in next year?

From what I read at the time of the trade, he was quite highly thought of but has had a couple of bad seasons. Worth a try anyway, considering he only cost Pither.

Yeah his contract will definitely kick in for next year. I'm not seeing anything about him signing an ATO for this year yet.

Yeah I don't know. All I'm seeing on twitter is that he just signed a contract for the Flyers nothing about where he'll be assigned to.

Our prospect depth is also so decrepit that the definition of 'nothing' changes. I said it in the prospect thread one day, they took him in the trade. Someone on Holmgren's payroll thought this was a good idea.

Meh. Reach prospect/possible NHL callup. If we get lucky he'll be a bottom pair guy for a few years. My guess is he is the next Gustaffson (in other words, people will pencil him as a bottom pair guy, mention him in potential trades as an asset, complain when he is not "given a chance" to develop).

I watched one gophers game this year and this kid looked great. I was surprised with his skating being a bigger guy. Played aggressive and physical, you noticed when he was on the ice. I may have caught his best game ever, but he looked good!

Nah, I think if anything they'd put Rosehill back on D and use McGinn

No, they wouldn't. Pretty sure they'd use Foster instead.

I dunno, they did put Lauridsen in over Foster and aren't doing anything with Lilja either...

Gus proved much more in college and in his first yr of pro hockey then Alt has. Maybe people will pencil him in and all that (even though i doubt it as the flyers have a couple ahead of him on the depth charts) but it will be unwarranted. not saying you where comparing them in that regard, i'm merely stating a fact.
