Oilers Sign Kale Kessy (ELC)

per twitter
Quote:
@EdmontonOilers 6m
#Oilers have agreed to terms with @blazerhockey left-winger Kale Kessy (@KaleKessy) on a three-year entry level contract

edit:
I suggest everyone watch Kessy in a WHL Playoff battle on Shaw at 7:05 MST. This will help you to build your argument that Kale Kessy is:
a) A Useless Goon
b) Effective Power Forward
c) Waste of a Contract
D) Tobias Reider's Evil Twin

Was a great article in the Journal the other day about this kid, and the change in his role this year. Good luck Kessy!

Kind of surprised to see him signed before some of our other prospects, they must like him.

I'd hope they like him seeing how they traded for him. Then again, it is our management!

Unlikely, but it would be nice to have a Moroz - Ewanyk - Kessy home grown 4th line with size and grit on the cheap on the last year of their ELC's.

Kessy will be 21 this year so will be graduating to pro in the fall.

There has been some talk in the blogosphere about the Oilers not doing a good enough job of managing their contract limit. This contract does worry me a little in that respect.

You can watch him and the Blazers a take on Kelowna tonight on Shaw at 7:05 MST.
He has 9 pts (7G 2A) in 6 playoff games this year.

I'm really not surprised. He's exactly what we need, and there's going to be quite a few guys cut loose this summer to make room for other prospects we need to sign

That "coversation" though is pretty stupid, seeing as you'll likely find "bad contracts" in every organization.

It's a 50 contract limit, impossible for them to all be "gems".

I don't mind the signing, he likely joins OKC on an ATO after his WHL playoffs, right?

Having 20 contracts spots open next year isn't doing a good job?

Swing and a miss for the Oilers bloggers yet again.

I asked this in the other thread and don't think anyone responded so I'll try again. Any chance Kessy gets called up to the AHL if Kamloops is eliminated?

What's the big deal:

Peckham, Sutton, Hordichuk, Plante, VandeVelde, Cornet, Teubert are all free agents in the summer.
Other than maybe Teubert, I expect they will all be cut.

Wow, that's not what they are talking about at all. Perhaps try to get your opinions on there arguments from the horses mouth and not based on a vauge comment. Most of the contract limit issues i've been hearing commented on have nothing to do with guys like Kessey but rather contracts to players like Abney, Ewanyk and Hordichuk. It's also been largely referenced in regards to this season and some issues they've had in the past. Last off season one could argue they made a poor decision to let a guy like Blain walk when a guy like Abney has a deal and Hordichuk was resigned, and it's a valid criticsm.

There has been some criticsm/concern in regards to the Reider for Kessey trade as it's become a theme for the Oilers to give up/pass up better talents for "truculance" (i.e. Moroz pick). Reider has also been the better junior up to this point. Kessey is doing well as an overager but it's hardly a sign of certain NHL potential. I don't care for the deal but i'm not in arms up over it either as we need size that can play and i'm fairly ignorant in regards to either player. But this has been the crux of the arguments most commonly found on the blogosphere.

Also you do know that there are many varied opinions on the blogs, just like HF, it's not as if it's some kind of hive mind institution (one could argue that a "hive mind" mentality is more analogous with HF). I don't understand the apprehension towards a group of people when it seems to have nothing to do with the actual opinions and arguments and more to do with association (i.e. "bloggers"). Your blanket statement and indifference to the actual content of their argument seems to suggest that you are bothered more by their association than their opinions, that's really too bad as you're missing out on a lot of interesting banter. It really seems like many on HFOil have a huge inferiority complex and i don't understand why it needs to persist (okay maybe i do a little, but i won't get into that...).

It was bad idea to let go of a mediocre prospect who was suspended for racial slurs?

He must have had a good CORSI or Fenwick.

The alternative would be to simply let him go back in the draft. This does not sound like the right move to me. I am just speculating here but I think that was a real danger with Rieder.

The contract limit is not a big deal. There are lots of options in front of them.

Did you just make some sort of attempt to compare Reider to Schremp?? You do realize that Reider has great wheels and is considered one of the top PKers in junior hockey.

It does, but he'll be able to sign an ATO to play the rest of this season.

Terrible stuff gets said in hockey all the time, it certainly doesn't look good but it's not so bad that the suspension wasn't punishment enough. I don't think you realize how common stuff like this happens at the major junior level (i.e. John Vanbiesbrouck), guys just don't always get caught. He's had a decent pro debut in chicago's organization. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=115893

Also this was an example and certainly not the point of my comment. Perhaps you could bother to respond points made in my argument an not just examples used to show relevance. I'm not suggesting not signing Blain was some earth shattering **** up but it's an example of a long list of Oilers managment making odd decisions by letting a more skilled player go while signing knuckledraggers like Abney. Blain would be a much more valuable commodity to the Oilers right now than some of these "grit" guys the Oilers have been targeting.

Corsi and Fenwick have nothing to do with this debate, and it has nothing to do with the Kessey-Reider swap. Corsi and Fenwick are not avaliable for the CHL as far as i know and it's certainly not a talking point brought up when discussing prospects. It's very odd how bitter you are as this kind of derision seems very over the top.

Signing Hordichuk and Abney over Blain is your main point of why the blogosphere is right to criticize the Oilers for "not being good enough with their 50 contract limit"?
