Gagner is having a Kessel like season statistically, so the idea of trading Gardiner if he is to be traded for a young offensive center wouldn't be all that bad an idea.
Kadri lupul and kessel all have better ppg.

that makes him 4th best, yes.

Gardiner was built more for Wilson's systems yes.
Schenn is more built for Carlyle's system.

However you look at it, they were both great prospects/players that weren't utilized properly.

Anyways, gardiner only got benched to get the kid's attention.

because whenever randy put him in the lineup, he plays the hell out if him, more than anyone other than phaneuf.

What's funny, of all the D men, Gardiner is most like Carlyle as a player.

That shows you how Randy thinks of him.

Gardiner is still a young D that will help the Leafs for a long time.

If he didn't like Gardiner...he would be played 14 minutes when he's in the line up.

I think Gardiner breaks out next season under Carlyle.

True Carlyle the player was probably a more physical version of Gardiner.

I'm sure he'll take Gardiner under his wing and develop him into one of our best D's.

I hope so. Honestly I think we should see a Gardiner-ROB pairing soon. One is a stellar offensive defenseman and another is a stay-at-ho.e defenseman that can hit hard and block shots effectively.

Carlyle puts players in positions to succeed.

He realizes Gardiner's strength and weaknesses and plays him according to situation.

Gardiner gets to play in an offensive role when its required as that is his greatest strength.

Carlyle's #1 goal (as it should be) is to make the playoffs and fans shouldn't lose focus of that in all of this.

Sophmore slump, most players go through it, almost all defencemen go through it.

Let's not forget RC was part of the Anaheim staff that looked at Schultz as a higher prospect and deemed Gardiner expendable in the Lupul trade, something to ponder.

I agree we should be trying our best to make the playoffs, but once we clinch I want Gardiner's role to expand.

Carlyle might very well have this same idea in mind and working towards that.

Phaneuf --- Gunnarsson
Gardiner -- O' Bryne
Fraser ---- Franson

No one is going to miss Kostka and Liles if that were the case.

I see what your saying but It's a total different situation. Kadri was our only blue chip center prospect in our system, at a position we desperately needed upgrading. Jake on the other hand plays a position that we see as a huge strength for this team. We have depth at young offensive dmen, if we can trade one of them for an upgrade at center it would be for the best.

To all the people suggesting to trade Gardiner, it's only worth doing if we get the right player for him. It takes time for defencemen to learn what they need to do in the NHL when they don't have the puck, and he'll eventually figure it out and become a good player. I totally agree that he could be expendable due to the presence of Reilly in the organization, but that doesn't mean we need to get rid of him for the sake of it. If he's traded it's going to be because we get a top tier NHL player who's young enough to grow with this team, it's going to be because we get something awesome. If that isn't there in trade, and obviously it wasn't at the deadline, then we're going to be better off keeping him and letting him develop. I have no problem with him sitting down the stretch, and only playing sparingly. It's how young defencemen break into most playoff bound teams. If an injury happens, he'll get his trial by fire.

Do we know that? I'll admit it seems like a possibility, but is it not also possible that Burke simply wanted Gardiner and wasn't going to make the deal without him. And Anaheim wanted Beauchemin back and Lupul's contract gone enough that they were willing to let him go. Or maybe they viewed them as equal (or almost equal) and were willing to let either go? And do we know if Bob Murray even consulted Randy Carlyle about which one to deal? Because frankly, I doubt that Randy had had a chance to see either one play much.

And Gardiner and Schultz were still in college at that point. I doubt Carlyle had much input on players he had barely ever watched play.

Was just about to come here and say this. Brian Burke definitely asked for Schultz but he got Gardiner and carlyle never had him in his reach as he was in College.

I really do hope Gardiner tightens up his defensive game this time around so that theres no reason for him to be benched again! Love him as a player and hope he lights it up tonight/going forward!

Lol, this reminded me of a tweet earlier from Jonas:

Jonas Siegel ‏@jonasTSN1050 43m
Colborne says message from Carlyle to him and Jake Gardiner, who will also play tonight, "not to screw it up". Was said sarcastically.

As I said carlyle knows how to use his player and knows when to bring them out when needed. He called our Kadri when he wasin a bit of a funk, called our JVR, frattin, gards and so on.

Carlyle will go with Liles first.

With so much on the line,Liles will play in the playoffs.

Question: At the draft a team with a top 5 pick calls about Gardiner. Are we taking that call? Somehow, Reilly seems like a Carlyle guy.

Don't worry about it , no ones giving up a top pick in this years draft for Gards .
