Team gave up on the game (and subsequently on any hopes of making it) once it was 3-1. It's a shame really. It would have been one thing if we had lost a couple close fought games. But basically just laid down and quit 2 in a row.
Shame on me for having any hope. I was never expecting the team to make the playoffs, but I was at least hoping that the 5 game win streak was signalling a change for this team. Doesn't look like it based on the past two games.
Smyth shouldn't be playing over anyone at this point, Horcoff is back to buyout fodder after being carried by Hall for a couple of weeks. Hemsky is flat out invisible 99% of the time these days, and is a crutch the coach uses to justify dropping Yakupov down the lineup.
The kid line is fantastic at home, but far too easily rendered ineffective on the road. They are developing, but they aren't there yet.
Gagner/PVR/Yak had some good shifts, but their youth, lack of grit and power is exposed in games like this.
The defense is mediocre, not really costing the team games, but not really helping the team win anything either. Dubnyk played well.
We'll see how they do after the road trip as this is a much better team at home than on the road, but it's not looking good right now when every game is a must win.
Could be another long season next year, if Tambo fails to address the holes on this team. Having The ducks, kings, sharks and coyotes doesn't bode well for this squad. Not to mention Vancouver will still be with us. Here's to Tambo bringing in some grit that can actually play in meaningful roles.
Not coming in here to criticize and have read some of you GDT. I think this is a pretty good assessment of the Oilers. Your team obviously has a ton of skill, but teams in the Pacific Division generally have big strong forwards.
Tambellini really needs to think about at least getting some bigger, stronger defensemen to combat the big forwards they will be seeing once the new conference starts play next season. If you can't get the puck up and out of your zone the skill up front doesn't get to go to work.
Good luck the rest of the way, I was rooting for your team to squeak into the playoffs. I'm sure with the new format the Kings and Oilers will see each other in future playoff series.
This run is all fine and dandy; however this is eerily familiar with previous seasons, right around this amount of games in the season the oilers begin to fall apart. Then procede to crap the bed and go on an extended losing streak falling in the basement for the remainder of the season.
And that's what we look like against a bigger team that is a legit cup threat. No surprise. We really need some talented size on this team. I hope we take Nichushkin in the draft somehow (even if he will be minimum 2 years away).
I hope Barkov falls like Couturier did, he's what is missing IMO.
