A poster on nyrangersblog commented that Fast was hurt in the game and did not return, but I do not see that mentioned in this thread...any one know if this actually happened?

Hearing Fast is out with a lower body injury? Whale lead 1-0 after one in Bridgeport.

Delayed Whale Watching (during the Ranger intermissions):

Big pad save by Talbot on an Island Tiger who was right in front of him.

Fast break, Tessier to Pyett, but Dipstick stopped him in a surprisingly good move. He's not a good goalie, even at the AHL level.

Mash with a good play to break up a 2 on 1.

Penalty on Donovan. Kreider with a nice stickhandling move to get a shot. Later he lost the puck while stickhandling.

SCORE: It's a power play goal! Vernace runs with the puck from his own net, pass to Ferriero in the right circle, who drives closer and scores while Mash, and to a lesser degree Thomas were driving to the net.

Kreider has no point yet, but is playing a very strong game so far. If he plays like this the rest of the game, I would bet that he'll collect points.

Talbot playing well too.

Haley gives away the puck by trying to pass across the ice right in front of Talbot. How does a guy with this much pro experience do that?!

Haley on a breakaway, goes for the 5-hole, but Dipstick stops him.

Hrivik is in the middle of a 2-3 minute shift.

Big saves by Dipstick on Mash, then on Ferriero on rebound. Dipstick is playing well.

MCI needs to get his shot off better: faster release and stop hitting the defender in front of him.

FIRST PERIOD OVER: The Whale is a much better team on paper, but doesn't look it.

SECOND PERIOD

Bourque with a good pass to Tessier, but Donovan caught up and prevented a breakaway.

A lot of early shots by the Island Tigers, but most are easy enough. Talbot has been solid.

Haley gets hit hard by McIver, but gets up and wins the fight decisively.

Donovan scores from a couple feet out on a high shot. Can't blame Talbot. The goal is similar to the one scored on Lundqvist, but from closer distance. 1-1

Just 59 seconds after Donovan scored, Bourque scores on a hard, high shot on a good pass from Jean from behind the net. Tessier with the other assist. 2-1.

Tiger PP. Nelson is left unguarded on the left side of Talbot and the puck is sent to him for a half-empty net. 2-2.

Palm with a good drive to the net.

Newbury is fighting Diamond. Great fight with both players throwing big time, fast punches. Noob won, but it was a very close fight and the tiny 5-foot-7 Diamond should get a lot of credit for going toe-to-toe with Noob.

SECOND OVER. Can't believe we are not beating a team that is clearly inferior.

THIRD PERIOD

Segal and Noob on a 2 on 1, Segal with a nice pass to Noob, but he hits the outside of the net.

Not to worry, on the same shift, Segal extends his goal scoring streak to 6 games. I say we don't bench him ... Kreider, pass to Collins, drives towards the net, Collins back to Kreider, who slides it to Segal, who scores. See, I told you Kreider will get on the stat sheet tonight.

Segal has the longest goal scoring streak for a Whale/Pack player since 2006-07 when some no-talent grinder named Callahan had a franchise record 8-game goal scoring streak.

Talbot flashes his glove. And again a couple minutes later.

Jean takes away the puck and skates well creating a semi-fastbreak.

Talbot, 34 saves already, is doing in Hartford what Lundqvist was just doing in the Garden. The rest of the team is incapable of playing defense. Someone needs to buy them "Defense for Dummies" for Easter.

Sundstrom scores, but the ref rules that Talbot was interfered with. Tigers get a penalty instead of a goal.

Penalty on Tessier for tripping.

Segal with a good run shorthanded.

It's a Talbot show out there.

Dipstick is pulled for an extra attacker. Mash stupidly tries to go for a goal and gets icing. Klassen clears off the faceoff. Segal with a nice pass to Mash who fails to score in a near-empty net (it was blocked by a defenseman).

GAME OVER: Talbot with 38 saves on 40 shots, including 14 in the third period when he put on a clinic. The Whale announcer was overheard saying, "these guys are gonna give me a heart attack."

8-2 in their last 10? Awesome. Hershey lost, gave the team some breathing room in the 7th spot.

THREE WHALE STARS

1. Talbot: saved the game for the Whale, which was badly outplayed.
2. Segal: offensive dynamo as of late.
3. Kreider: good effort.

HM - Thomas. Same as Kreider, but I gave Kreider the advantage because he got a point and Thomas didn't. Otherwise, a good game by him.

Hershey lost, which is good since they are the 8 seed, breathing down our necks. The Whale have 3 extra points in one extra game.

M&Ms lost and now 9 points behind the Whale with 7 games to play. They are out as a threat.

WBS beat Albany. Albany is now 8 points behind with 7 games to play, so I think they are out as a threat as well. WBS may be impossible to catch for the Whale though, as they have 4 extra points in one extra game, but the Whale have only 6 games to go.

The Whale are looking like they are settling into the 7 seed. #6 WBS is playing #8 Hersey tomorrow, so let's see how that goes.

The Whale will play against the difficult Providence team. I hope Kenny G doesn't get any bright ideas to start Talbot for the third game in 3 days when he just had to face 40 shots.

Fasth arrived in North America with a knee injury suffered in the playoffs. Its not a serious injury. Maybe Fasth tweaked it on Friday night.

Gotta be cautious.

Whale playing 3 days in a row, smart to sit him yesterday.

Very excited to see what Fast can do in the AHL. I do not expect him to struggle at all in this league. Only thing keeping him from the NHL right now is about 15 pounds of muscle.

Big defensemen take more time to develop than two-way defensemen.

Adam Foote, Derian Hatcher, Brooks Orpik, Jay McKee, Scott Hannan, Robyn Regehr, and Braydon Coburn are just a handful of 1st round defensive d-men who took a while to establish themselves.

Of course, you have a lot of busts, but I think the conditions are set for McIlrath to succeed. If he starts off his NHL career playing 14-16 mins a night on a bottom pair on a good team with a Vezina goalie, the only pressure he should deal with is what he puts on himself.

Big, defenseman who play a 2 way game take a while. Big, stay at home defenseman like McIlrath don't take longer. They play a simple game. I don't see any way McIlrath is not on this team next year.

Excellent points. Even an impatient longtime Ranger's fan like me realizes that McIIrath is being brought along right and will be put into a situation to ultimately succeed with the parent club once he get's there.

I can see him not making it next year. He's tentative with the puck, he needs to improve his balance, he needs to think faster. All of this can be fixed over the summer or it can linger for 2 more years. It's all up to MCI.
