And do we know if Bob Murray even consulted Randy Carlyle about which one to deal? Because frankly, I doubt that Randy had had a chance to see either one play much.
Burke wanted Schultz in return for Beauchemin but Anaheim wouldn't do it for Schultz. It was Gardiner or no deal.

Any plan that does not involve working Gardiner into a permanent spot in the lineup would be idiotic.

I didn't notice Jake too much tonight, maybe this is a good thing. When you do, it can be equally good or bad.

He was good, he made one memorable pass in the first. He'll do fine. IMO.

He kept it pretty simple tonight. Noticed a couple of questionable pinches, but nothing major. Moved the puck well made some good decisions.

Think he got the message.

So freaking out over a 3-game stint seems silly now doesn't it?

Not really. I'm still not convinced he's in their long term plans after he's played his 8th game this season for them.

This was Jake's most controlled game to date, he tried to do less and this was better for him and us.

No it's not. You're just speculating to create drama, we get enough of that from the media.

Indeed. He took Randy lesson to heart, he definitely looked better than his AHL defense self already. I hope he follows through.

Yes, Randy won a Norris Trophy, played 17 seasons, and won the Cup as a coach. I think he knows what he's doing with Gardinder.

I think he just needs to learn how to balance the two. He can't be risky all the time and can't be safe all the time either.

Agreed

A player has to adapt his game to the coaches style and not the other way around to earn playing time.

Players that don't fit a particular system are often moved and replaced by ones that can.

Gardiner controls his own fate (to a point) in the way he plays and is asked to play.

It was too tight a game for adventures into the offensive zone. I was pleased with his effort. Baby steps.

Depends on his playoffs...

I don't agree, there are teams need that instant boost. Not all can wait 3 years,if they can get an instant impact.Draft picks are gambles, not all GM's have that luxuary.I would even venture Columbus might want instant gratification after years of top picks not really panning out.Colorado might not want another top center.Even Florida needs playoffs now,not later.

So you can say that now,but at the draft things change as owners tell GM's I need playoff revenue, not the future someday, maybe. We are in a good position,we no longer have to play prospects right away.

Reilly changes things drastically for Nonnis. If he makes the team next year,Im not even sure what Carlyle would do with Gardiner.

I don't think one win that Gardiner took part in changes this whole nightmare season at this point.

I think Gardiner is in their long term plan...but they want him to be as good as they think he can be.

I guess he doesn't really bench guys like Kostka/Holzer and try to change their game because they are 26 years old+ and what they are right now is the best they will be.

Gardiner on the other hand is a young stud that can improve his game and get better as long as he's willing to learn.

Gardiner played 16 minutes last night...which would have been closer to 21-22 minutes if he didn't need to be stitched up in the 3rd.

Randy gives him the minutes to succeed..he just needs to stick in the line up though.

We all know Gards is incredibly gifted offensively... Carlyle knows that too. Right now, Carlyle is drilling defense into his head.

Eventually he will put both together and be a much better player in the long run. Development people, Development.

The Leafs are being patient with a young, high quality prospect.

As great as it would be for him to play every night, Carlyle is balancing the team's best interests as well as ensuring that Gardiner is developing properly.

I don't think one lockout shortened season where he suffered a concussion really dictates his long term future given his age and success last year (and this year in the AHL). You'd think the people here would learn their lesson by now about swinging back and forth like a pendulum with their opinions based on a perpetual 2 week to 2 month memory.

Col and Flor are sitting in the bottom 3 , there's no way they're trading out of a spot to draft a potential franchise player for Gards ( and I'm not knocking him when i'm saying this ) .

I also don't see him filling a need for Columbus but he may fetch a mid 1st which isn't a deal i'd be willing to make at this time .

I'm much more interested in trying to dump JML and develop Gards to be honest .
