How important is the draft?

These all could have been Blues (some actually were) --

GOAL - Patrick Roy, Mike Liut

DEFENSE - Nicklas Lindstrom, Ray Bourque, Chris Chelios

A LINE -- Brian Sutter, Bernie Federko, Mike Bossy
B LINE -- Peter Bondra, Sergei Federov, Jarri Kurri
C LINE -- Joe Sakic

=========

1977 - Bossy (22) - Blues picked Scott Campbell (9)
1979 - Bourque (8) - Blues picked Perry Turnbull (2)
1980 - Kurri (69) - Rik Wilson (12)
1981 - Chelios (40) - Marty Ruff (20)
1984 - Roy (51) - Brian Benning (26)
1987 - Sakic (15) - Keith Osborne (12)
1989 - Lindstrom (53) - Jason Marshall (9) and Federov (74) - Rick Corriveau (31)
1990 - Bondra (156) - Craig Johnson (33)

I'm sure you could do that for every team...

Easily.

And Perry Turnbull certainly wasn't a bad pick, by any means.

Maybe other teams have an equally poor draft record, but I have my doubts.

Turnbull was okay - but better than Ray Bourque? I think not.

Just shows how critical drafting is and I was surprised to see how many mistakes the Blues made in the past. Also shows how well they've done over the years with so few home-grown players.

I guess my point was that for the first time ever we've got a lot of real prospects in the pipeline. The future looks good.

There is absolutely no doubt that you could do that with every team, especially when you're going to use players who were drafted in the 5th or 6th round like Bondra. EVERY team passed him up at least a few times.
