Well that's subjective so I won't debate that, but like I said, people are nervous about him for very good reason. He's been fighting the puck all year. For me personally, I will never forget what he did last year, it was great. But when it comes to this season's momentum and need for wins right now, what happened last season doesn't carry much weight, and that goes for any player. That's all. I hope Elliott does well, I like him.
In other news, Mrs. Teletubby Riley Sheahan is in the lineup for Detroit.
Yours is a reasonable approach, and it's not irrational for fans to be nervous about his performance this year until he strings together more strong performances. That, I have no problem with.
But whether it's a Halak supporter with an agenda (there are a few and you know who you are) or just fans frustrated with the season's ups and downs funneling their frustrations, I've seen Elliott just get murdered here in comments. That's very different than just being nervous about him being in the net. That's the part that I don't get. He had a bad month coming off not playing during the lockout and most people wanted to waive him for zilch, just to expel him from the team. You can't deny that was the reaction.
The big thing for me is that last year wasn't the first time Elliot had played like that. There was a point when he was in Ottawa that he went on an absurd run as their starter and won something like 20 games in a row, and Ottawa secured the 4 spot that year. He then fell apart in the playoffs (which had a lot to do with Crosby) and wasn't the same until last year, where he did similarly. The problem is at this point, we can't be sure he's back. He's played two solid games in a row now, but it remains to be seen if he'll continue to play like that, given the quality of his other starts this year. I'm very worried that this will blow up in our face. I'm also just not convinced that either of our goalies were all that great last year, with the way our team played. Obviously, he set records, so he was definitely a good netminder, but the shot quality and quantity on both goals gave them plenty of very easy nights for goalies. The defense in total hasn't been quite as good this year, but both goalies have given up way more softies as well.
I understand his past history, and what I'm simply saying is he's been inconsistent and it has to do with confidence. But it isn't skillset IMO. Again, no issues with folks being nervous. I do disagree that our goalies weren't all that great last year, I think it's very easy to forget the quality scoring chances the Blues gave up that the netminders bailed out. I guarantee back in last season's GDTs there was real recognition that these guys were playing out of their minds. It got to the point where I didn't even get nervous on breakaways against Elliott. The guy was just in the zone, which is reflected in his runaway domination of the Quality Starts category.
As far as blowing up in the team's face, it's equally likely that Allen could get shelled in a game, lose his confidence, and then it's the same situation. Halak is just a gong show at this point, that dude just isn't going to help the team this year, and so at this point it's Elliott and Allen who will carry the load for better or worse. Yes, it could blow up, but there really aren't alternatives to those two guys.
I don't care who is in goal as long as they give us a chance to win. Elliot struggled for a while and was not that man. Now I think either will give us that chance and we will need both Goalies "A" game to make the playoffs.
I think JayBow gets his first goal as a blue today.
Responding to your avatar pic. That's the shot from Gus in the elevator episode 408. Listen to the sound playing behind him twitching his fingertips and then think about the significance of that sound in episode 413. Just one tiny, brilliant thing in that series.
