Tucker was adored as a Leaf. As much as Neil as a Senator. Despite is ignominious exit, that hit and goal struck at the heart of Leaf fan pride.
I'm glad a Leafer dropped on to show some perspective. The Leafs fans I knew a the time were irrationally livid over the stick throwing joke. I thought it was great, and kind of expected Leaf fans to have a laugh as well. :shrug
Especially since Alfredsson and Sundin are close friends IIRC. This "incident" was simply Alfredsson having some fun at his friend's expense and probably was not at all seen as an insult.
Leaf fan here, and when younger, I didn't think of it as "friends" playing around with eachother, but I also never took it as a serious attack on someone. He was having some fun, I'd probably do something like that to one of my buddies just for the laughs, if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at? Alfie is a great player, and It will be a sad day when he hangs 'em up.
Leaf fan coming in peace. I can tell you guys that Leaf fans don't really care about the stick throwing incident. For me, all my hate comes from the hit on Tucker and consequent goal. And a grudging respect. That's all, I'll get out now
Thanks for clearing that up. I never had the desire to actually ask Leaf fans in person why they booed Alfie but I knew it had to do with the Tucker hit. I think a lot of younger fans (i.e early teens) growing up now won't have a clue where the hate stems from, which is pretty sad.
