No it was that he wouldn't play a top 6 role straight away and would need to learn the game in the minors first. Both of which were true. Some posters were saying he would score 30 goals right off the bat and many were penciling him in as the winger for Getzlaf and Perry.

Its easy to make arguments, when nothing has happened. Goes for nearly every opinion based post in this forum.

Nobody knew how Etem would fair in the NHL, and probably for most part he beat what everyone thought would happen and has been very important for the team on the PK and his offence is picking up.

Vatanen has done really well in the AHL. He had three games here where he had no points and didn't do anything.

Will he be a stud, maybe. But AHL numbers don't equal NHL numbers, nor do 3 games equal a season of playing, if Etem was judged on first 3 games he wouldn't be here.

There is no evidence to argue Vatanen will or won't be good here, and until the team says he is ready to be a regular NHL player, he is not ready.

This goes for any prospect yet to play 10 or more games where they can get a feel for the game. Arguing one way or the other is moot since there is zero evidence to back anything up other then personal opinion. The only opinion in this case that matters is the team, and in this case for Vatanen/Lindholm neither are ready for a top 6 role.

If they were 100% ready for a full 3 zone NHL game, I am sure they would be here. Arguing any other thing is kind of pointless.

Anderson with another shutout, 4 this year. Got a assist too in a 3-0 win.

Tied for 8th with 8 games left. Hersey has a game in hand though.

One thing about Etem is, he's succeeding now because he was allowed to start slow, learn the NHL game and grow into his role. His development shouldn't come as a total shock, he's quite young so there was going to be an acclimation period, but now that he's become comfortable, it's clear he's getting better and better as an NHLer.

So, if Vatanen were to be allowed to do the same thing, no doubt in my mind in time he'd learn the game at a higher rate and grow comfortable in his development as an NHLer. Unfortunately, though, we're one of the top teams in the league, still battling for a division title and an eventual playoff run. We also have 7 solid NHL defensemen ahead of him, and the way we run our system, every guy plays quite a bit. The lowest in terms of TOI/G, Lovejoy, still racks up over 17 minutes a game. It's easy to let a guy like Etem, with his natural talents, start slow on the fourth line and build up, but we just can't do it with Vatanen, not right now. Right now we have to put the team first, and we can't take any risk of sheltering Vatanen for the rest of the regular season and hoping he's made some significant progress. Right now it's just not his time, but he'll get it with a full training camp and a full 82 game season next year.

The thing about Etem is that while he was drafted to hopefully be a top 6 guy he has proven himself not to be a defensive liability while here. That is what has allowed him to continue to stay and develop. Others have not proven themselves similarly.

While Norfolk is still in a playoff race there should be absolutely no thought of calling him up. But he'll get called to be on our taxi squad when their season is over. If it happens before the regular season is over and we have the divison locked up I'd like see him get a game or two in.

But as far as him being ready for the jump, the only way we'll know is if he plays in NHL games. He's proved himself at the AHL level and when there's a spot for him he should be given te opportunity to prove himself here. I didn't think he was so bad in his three games. He made me nervous a lot when he'd jump in on the play but I liked how much confidence he displayed. Yeah he got beat bad that one time when he fell down and was a little scrambly on the corners but so was Fowler when he started. I have confidence he'll fit right in when he's given the chance.

Mat Clark has gone +5 since February and has six points in that time.

The entire Admirals team has perked up since February, so it is not surprising that Clark would also be doing better in the plus/minus column. I think that there may be a place for Clark in the NHL as a 6/7 defenseman, but I do not believe that place to be on the Ducks, given the players that the Ducks have under contract for future years and the other defensemen looking to fill those open spots on the Ducks after taking those players under contract into account. I would certainly qualify him, and thus sign him, for another year to play in Norfolk to see how he does in the 2013/14 season. However, I consider him likely to be a player to be included in a trade at some point in the future.

We could use a 6/7 d-man if we let Lovejoy go. His physical side is something that a lot of our D is lacking, future and present. I could see him moved if O'Brien looks good next season. He's a better skater with a similar skillset.

I'd kind of hate to see Lovejoy go, but if somebody can outperform him in a 6/7 capacity then I guess that would be a good thing.

I suppose he could beat out Hampus and Sami for a spot next year, too.

I'm probably not clear on your meaning but my comment only related to somebody always having to be the marginal 6/7 guy who might not dress for quite a few games. I wouldn't see Sami or Hampus being used in that capacity.

I'm saying that's a scenario where Lovejoy could stay while Clark makes the team, where he's the rookie on the third pairing.

Anderson is currently sitting at second best goalie in the AHL. Way to go.

We've signed Kurtz to a one year ELC. He was only contracted to Norfolk/Syracuse in the past.

I wasn't clear if that was for this year (so he could be called up if needed) or for next year - did you see anything that explained which of the two it was?

I didn't and don't know for sure but I would assume it slides to next year.

Is there a roster limit in the A or can you dress 30 guys?

Norfolk went from stripped of all scoring talent at start of year, to having to much to dress now.

Vatanen was selected to the AHL All-Rookie Team as AHL announced the selections yesterday. The selections were Schultz, Vatanen, Spooner, Toffoli and Zucker.

http://theahl.com/2012-13-ahl-all-ro...ounced-p183133

From the AHL website I copied the text about the previous selections to see in what kind of company Vatanen is there.

"Previous selections to the annual AHL All-Rookie Team include Jean-Sebastien Giguere (1998), Zdeno Chara (1998), Brendan Morrison (1998), Marc Savard (1998), Daniel Briere (1998), J.P. Dumont (1999), Dan Boyle (1999), Cory Sarich (1999), Michael Leighton (2002), Barret Jackman (2002), Ron Hainsey (2002), Jason Spezza (2003), Brad Boyes (2003), Cam Ward (2005), Thomas Vanek (2005), Rene Bourque (2005), Kevin Bieksa (2005), Jimmy Howard (2006), Dan Girardi (2006), Mike Green (2006), Jaroslav Halak (2007), Troy Brouwer (2007), Ryan Callahan (2007), Bobby Ryan (2008), Teddy Purcell (2008), Brian Boyle (2008), Alex Goligoski (2008), Nathan Gerbe (2009), Justin Abdelkader (2009), John Carlson (2010), P.K. Subban (2010), Logan Couture (2010), Lars Eller (2010), Tyler Ennis (2010), Erik Gustafsson (2011), Luke Adam (2011), Zac Dalpe (2011), Cory Conacher (2012), Tyler Johnson (2012) and Gustav Nyquist (2012). Is it just because of his points? What i have read here, he is horrible in defensive zone.
