That said I am EXTREMELY high on both Monahan and Gauthier. I would be willing to trade down (to 5th) to snag an extra first from Buffalo in order to land both.
I'm also extremely high on Monahan. If we were somehow able to get him without giving up too much I'd want it to happen. If we draft him, I think he will end up our captain.

True Calgary Flames mind right here.
Chance to pick first or second overall? Nah, Quantity baby.

Followed by every fan boy screaming at the top of their lungs about how these guys will be this or that.

Much like trading up trading down depends on who we get. Columbus thought they had elite talent in Zhedrev but if they had traded back they could have gotten Getzlaf or Perry. Personally I am open to the idea of either trading up or back. We won't know how it works out for years.

I figured.

Like I said it all depends on how we draft. If we trade up and get Jones and he is the next E.Johnson then ****, but if he is the next Pronger then it is a huge win regardless of what we give up.

And if we trade down and draft Nichushkin and he is the next Zherdev then ****, but if he is the next Ovi then it is a win.

I just don't think you can judge something like drafting so black and white based immediately on what we got or how we got it.

Theirs makes ours look like perennial Norris contenders. We'd have to subtract one of Giordano or Brodie to be in their league for defence.

In other words, everyone knows they'd be taking Jones.

Would be great to get 1st overall and get them to trade up.

To move up 1 spot maybe 2? Their 2nd is more than fair unless Philly offers Couts + their 1st.

Depending on where Philly was I would take the Avs 2nd over that offer.

At this time, pretending Avs win tomorrow.

Calgary would get (Avs)
2nd Overall and 32nd overall

Calgary would get (Philly)
6th Overall and Couturier

Both would be good deals IMO.
One gets Calgary another pick, and they still get to draft the player they want at the end of the day.
The other gets Calgary's potential top line center they've been looking for, as well as being able to pick from a stable of still high end picks (Monohan, maybe Lindhoilm, Ristolainen)

Right now they would be at #6 it is about even for me, but I also think Cout is equal to about #5 pick in this draft so we could get a player that I see as being an elite 2nd line center + 6th overall pick. But I do love Couts.

They can't trade ROR until next deadline. That is still to big of overpayment for 1 spot to move up.

In 2003 Pitts traded 3rd overall + 2nd + Samuelsson(who was basically just a roster player) for 1st overall + 3rd

Draft:

1. Seth Jones

(trade 17 + 30 for 11)

11. Valeri Nichushkin

Draft the BPA and build from the net out. Franchise D are tough to find and Seth Jones is one. Trade up for the (hopefully) falling wildcard in Nichushkin.

Sign RFA's:

T.J. Brodie - 4 years, $12 million (3/year) - 1 way
Mikael Backlund - 3 years, $8 million (2.67/year) 1-way
Lance Bouma - 1 year, $600k (0.600/year) 2-way
Mark Cundari - 2 years, $1.2 million (0.600/year) 2-way
Paul Byron - 1 year, $750k (0.75/year) 2-way
Chris Breen - 1 year, $700K (0.700/year) 2-way
Chris Butler - 1 year, $2 million (2.0/year)

Lock up Brodie and Backlund longer term at reasonable rates.

Sign UFA's:

Brian McGrattan - 1 year, 750k, (0.75/year)
Karri Ramo - 1 year, $3 million (3/year)
Brian Bickell- 3 years, 7 Million (2.33/year)
Bobby Sanguinetti- 2 years, 2 million (1/ year)
Steve Begin- 1 year, 750K (0.75/year)

Bickell adds grit and we take a flyer on Sanguinetti

2013-2014 Roster

Tanguay - Backlund - Cammalleri
Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Baertschi - Horak - Hudler
Bickell - Bouma - Jackman
McGratten, Begin

Brodie - Wideman
Giordano - Jones
Sanguinetti - Butler
Breen/Sarich/Cundari

Ramo
Berra

Pretty Simple start to the rebuild. Players like Backlund, Brodie, Horak and Baertschi are given important minutes. We see what we have in Ramo and Berra.

Top 5 prospects:

1. Valeri Nichuskin
2. Johnny Gaudreau
3. Mark Jankowski
4. John Gillies
5. Laurent Brossoit

2016???

Johnny Gaudreau - Mark Jankowski - Valeri Nichuskin
Sven Baertschi - Mikael Backlund - Mike Cammalleri
Curtis Glencross - Bill Arnold - Ben Hanowski
Michael Ferland - Max Reinhart - Brian Bickell

Seth Jones - Mark Giordano
TJ Brodie - Patrick Seiloff
Dennis Wideman - Tyler Wotherspoon

Laurent Brossoit
John Gillies

In Reality, most of these guys wont be here but who the hell knows, its the start of a young core.

No Agostino? From what I've heard from Pens fans and seen from scouting reports he's more likely to make the NHL than Hanowski, his ceiling just isn't as high.

I guess I will try.

I want to try and improve the team via free agency while the prospects are developing. The goal is to make the team more difficult to play against, target young UFAs for potential bigger roles and when I add a veteran it will be one that will either be a great leader & mentor or make the Flames (or Heat) harder to play against.

I also don't want to throw too many rookies to the wolves all at once, even if the team is younger I think they still deserve a chance to learn to win, which means some time in the AHL for several of the youngsters.

I would dismantle the coaching staff in Abbotsford:
  • Fire Troy G. Ward
    • I like Ward but I think a change in direction is needed.

  • Hire Jared Bednar as new Head Coach
    • Bednar was an assistant in Abbotsford during their first season, he moved on to be the head coach of the Peoria Rivermen for 2 seasons before returning to the Assistant coaching ranks in Springfield this year.

I would use the two complaince buyouts:
  • Buyout Cory Sarich
  • Buyout Tim Jackman

I would sign some of the players the Flames own the rights to:
  • Markus Granlund
    • 3 years, $925,000 per year

  • Ben Hanowski
    • 2 years, $750,000 per year

  • Reto Berra
    • 1 year, 650,000 per year

I would sign some of the Flames restricted and unrestricted free agents:
  • Mikael Backlund
    • 2 years, $2,000,000 per year

  • Lance Bouma
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year (two-way contract)

  • Chris Breen
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year (two-way contract)

  • TJ Brodie
    • 3 years, $2,500,000 per year

  • Chris Butler
    • 2 years, $2,000,000 per year

  • Paul Byron
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year (two-way contract)

  • Mark Cundari
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year (two-way contract)

  • Brady Lamb
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year (two-way contract)

  • Greg Nemisz
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year (two-way contract)

  • Karri Ramo
    • 2 years, $2,500,000 per year

  • Brian McGrattan
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year

I would make a couple trades before the draft:
  • Trade Mike Cammalleri to the Winnipeg Jets for two second round picks (Jets & Blackhawks) in 2013.
  • Trade Lee Stempniak to the Montreal Canadiens for a second round pick (Flames) in 2013.

I would make a couple draft day trades:
  • Trade two first round picks (Penguins & Blues) in 2013 and a second round pick (Blackhawks) in 2013 to the Phoenix Coyotes for a first round pick (Coyotes) in 2013.
  • Trade two second round picks (Flames & Jets) in 2013 to the San Jose Sharks for a first round pick (Sharks) in 2013.

I would draft:
  • 1st round - Nathan MacKinnon
    • Centre - 5'11", 190lbs (Halifax, QMJHL)

  • 1st round - Sean Monahan
    • Centre - 6'2", 190lbs (Ottawa, OHL)

  • 1st round - Robert Hagg
    • Defense - 6'2", 205lbs (MoDo U20, Sweden)

  • 3rd round - Justin Bailey
    • Right Wing - 6'3", 190lbs (Kitchener, OHL)

  • 4th round - Michael Downing
    • Defense - 6'3", 185lbs (Dubuque, USHL - committed to Michigan)

  • 5th Round - Eamon McAdam
    • Goaltender - 6'2", 185lbs (Waterloo, USHL - committed to Penn State)

  • 6th round - Tyler Bertuzzi
    • Left Wing - 5'9", 150lbs (Guelph, OHL)

  • 7th round - Spenser Jensen
    • Defense - 6'4", 195lbs (Medicine Hat, WHL)

  • 7th round - Keegan Kanzig
    • Defense - 6'5", 200lbs (Victoria, WHL)

I would sign the Flames first round draft picks
  • Nathan MacKinnon
    • 3 years, $3.775,000 per year

  • Sean Monahan
    • 3 years, $2,750,000 per year

  • Robert Hagg
    • 3 years, $1,500,000 per year

I would sign a few players to AHL contracts
  • Carter Bancks
  • Brett Carson
  • Ben Walter

I would sign some unrestricted free agents:
  • Damien Brunner
    • 3 years, $3,000,000 per year

  • David Clarkson
    • 5 years, $4,250,000per year

  • Roman Hamrlik
    • 1 year, $1,750,000

  • Ryan Jones
    • 2 years, $1,500,000 per year

  • Joey MacDoanld
    • 1 year, $575,000 per year

  • Steven Seigo
    • 1 year, $650,000 per year

  • Jerred Smithson
    • 1 year, $850,000 per year

  • Jim Vandermeer
    • 1 year, $575,000 per year

Flames Roster:

Alex Tanguay *Alternate* - Nathan MacKinnon - David Clarkson
Sven Baertschi - Matt Stajan *Alternate* - Damien Brunner
Curtis Glencross *Alternate* - Mikael Backlund - Jiri Hudler
Lance Bouma - Jerred Smithson - Ryan Jones
Brian McGrattan

TJ Brodie - Mark Giordano *Captain*
Chris Butler - Dennis Wideman
Chris Breen - Roman Hamrlik
Mark Cundari - Derek Smith

Karri Ramo - Reto Berra

Heat Roster:

Roman Horak - Max Reinhart - Greg Nemisz *Alternate*
Paul Byron - Ben Street - Ben Walter *Alternate*
Ryan Howse - Markus Granlund - Ben Hanowski
Carter Bancks *Captain* - Blair Jones - Michael Ferland
Turner Elson - David Eddy

John Ramage - Brett Carson *Alternate*
Tyler Wotherspoon - Brady Lamb
Jim Vandermeer - Steven Seigo
James Martin

Joey MacDonald - Laurent Brossoit

A few notes on things people may question:
  • Buying out Sarich & Jackman - It's not about the money, it's about freeing up roster and contract spots for players that better fit the new direction of the club.
  • Re-signing Nemisz - I do not think 1 poor injury plagued season is a reason to give up on a player just finishing his entry level deal. I think he will rebound next year, at worst he is a great leaser and penalty killer for the farm club.
  • Trading Cammalleri & Stempniak - I wanted to keep 3 first round picks while still moving up in the draft, they are the only way we can do that IMO.
  • Signing Clarkson & Brunner - Yes, I know I probably would be "overpaying" for both of them, unfortunately you already overpay for UFAs and overpay even more when you are not a good team.
  • Signing Veterans Hamrlik, Smithson, Jones & Vandermeer - Hamrlik is a great mentor, he did wonders with Phaneuf and I hope he can have a similar influence on Brodie, Breen, Cundari and even Butler. Vandermeer was signed to do the same in Abbotsford as well as add some grit to their club. Smithson will add size, physical play and faceoff ability down the middle. Jones adds a pest element as well as a solid physical game and the ability to play on the 3rd line when there are injuries.
