My girlfriend's 14 year old sister got a staff infection after going to the dentist this fall. It attached itself onto a defect on her heart. She was on the brink of death for about a month and had several emergency heart surgeries. It only seemed like the flu initially and if her mother wasn't a doctor who could tell that something was up, she'd be dead now.
It's so easy to forget these days that illnesses can be fatal if you have the worst luck.
Really awful news for the Valantenkos. That is just tragic. Waaay too young.
As for the Whale and Fasth, if it's the same knee again then honestly, just shut him down for the year. He has the skill/speed/smarts to be an NHLer but he needs to add some meat and strengthen himself. He should have a long meeting with Reg Grant and spend all summer paying extra attention to lower body strength and muscle.
He's a great prospect (my favorite) and a lot of us here and Rangers fans have really taken a liking to him, but unless he is able to bulk up a little, he's going to keep getting dinged up every few weeks or months.
FWIW, Fast's injury is being called a sprained knee. He's day to day. Yogan sustained a broken had a week ago, and they're saying at least 4 weeks for him.
Yeah, I've guesses at a sprain all along.
I've had multiple teammates with this problem. You sprain it once you kind of tear the muscle tissue around the knee. If you get it during the season and don't rehab properly, it can keep "popping" out. Hurts like hell and you get subsequent swelling. But you can be back within like three days. You need to like give it 4-5 weeks rest/rehab to get back the stability. But you can also keep playing and re-hurt it like every other week.
You don't hear about these types of injuries at that often at the highest levels. I thought they had better braces. Maybe they just have more muscle around the knee. Fasth problem could be related to his broken leg, maybe he hasn't been able to build up his strength 100% in the muscles around the knee.
No worries long term on this one. No ACL/MCL problem with a sprain. It's basically a mild dislocation in the knee.
what is the deal about this guy? he seemed to put up ok numbers for the Devils as a 3rd liner and then got dealt in the Zidlicky deal, then sent to the AHL and hasnt done much in the AHL, and then traded to NYR and hasnt done much with the CT Whale. only 23 years old has nice size and a little skill... any chance he can still make the NHL on a regular basis... why has his numbers dropped, lack of work ethic, injuries??
Palm is a good player without much ability to finish. He hustles hard and skates well. He has good size that he knows how to use. However, he lacks offensive creativity and skills. He also needs to play a little smarter. I can see him becoming a 4th line spark plug in the NHL, but I can also see him spending his career in the minor leagues. He is one of those players for whom working hard is a matter of being a multi-millionaire or making a middle-class salary in his 20s followed by starting his life from scratch in his 30s.
