Lightning 37 16 19 2 34
Hurricanes 37 16 19 2 34
Panthers 39 13 20 6 32
Flames 37 13 20 4 30
Avalanche 38 12 21 5 29

I don't see the Av's passing us, I am thinking about 3rd from last, Panthers won today, so that brought them with in 2.

Too bad Tampa lost. If they beat Washington it would have dropped Carolina to 14th and given them control of their own playoff destiny again.

The Southeast is so bad.

Unfortunately, I see the Avs choosing Jones over McK (simply because their forward core is pretty beastly already) and Calgary would be foolish not to take MacKinnon if he were available.

Don't know much about the draft, but are there any defensemen after Jones near that potential level or is it just Jones and a bunch of forwards?

Darnell Nurse comes to mind. 6'5 and skinny and not NHL ready as Jones

It doesn't matter how badly we need a dman, I think we should draft MacKinnon if we ended up win the first pick.

Something to keep in mind as we embrace the tank:

1st - 25.0%
2nd - 18.8%
3rd - 14.2%
4th - 10.7%
5th - 8.1%
6th - 6.2%
7th - 4.7%
8th - 3.6%
9th - 2.7%
10th - 2.1%
11th - 1.5%
12th - 1.1%
13th - 0.8%
14th - 0.5%

Even finishing dead last by 10 points would give us a mere 25% shot at the #1 pick. That's kind of depressing from the perspective of the team in last place... not really sure I'd want to "win" that prize given the 75% chance of getting ripped off. There's a good chance another team scoops that pick and laughs in our faces for the next 20 years. That would suck A LOT worse than just getting the #2 pick in regular order.

To me, the goal of a tank job in this system is to just get into the bottom-4 where you have a decent shot at the lottery. It would be nice to accomplish that without becoming the next Charlotte Bobcats or Columbus Blue Jackets.

As long as we are top 3 one of jones, mackinnon, drouin is helpful. Jones a number 1 or 2 dman beside Faulk. Mackinnon goal scoring third line center or 2nd line winger. Drouin a nifty playmaker for skinner and j staal.

I'd like Drouin, mostly for the ability to call him Jean-Guy and say "open your ****ing eyes Drouin" every time he's offsides (or I feel like it)

So Ovechkin leads the league in goals now? I guess his demise was slightly over exaggerated.

I can't imagine the amount of self-discipline it must take for him not to buy a full-page ad in the Washington Post telling the hockey media to go **** themselves.

Unless something miraculous happens, I think JR needs to be prepared to pay big time to trade for the 1st pick.

A beleaguered fan base facing price hikes needs that kind of boost to get excited for next season.

He'd have to give up the farm for #1 overall this year. For the type of return (I think) it would take for that pick, I'd rather get a proven player than a blue-chip prospect. Also, if anyone can move into #1 via trade, keep in mind that CBJ has 3 first round picks.

No doubt. But he needs to do something to create some interest. Given CBJ's deadline deal and drafting Murray last year, they may opt to build depth vs. go for the home run.

If we do drop to that #3 spot, I think JR will take his chances. That's a 15% chance of the 1st overall (which isn't bad at all), and the movement from 3rd to 1st shouldn't be a big price hike.

Though I suppose it depends on who does grab the 1st overall pick.

Definitely, would hinge on who gets it. If you want Jones, it won't be good if the Avs have the top pick. He's a need and has some earlier ties to the organization.

Clearly we will finish 3rd-last overall and a team behind us will win the lottery, bumping us to the 4th pick.

I have Moosehead season tickets. I am ruined for life for jr hockey after watching McKinnon and Drouin play together the last year and a half.

Throughout the streak I felt like they could turn it around, but wins are definitely counter-productive at this point.

All of this talk about dropping further in the standings...it's like this is the first year all of you have been Hurricanes fans.

This isn't a year where it feels urgent to get the top pick. Jones is clearly a franchise player in the making, but it's only been in the past month or two that he's emerged as the #1 consensus. And there are still plenty of people saying they'd take McKinnon. This seems like a Hall/Seguin or Tavares/Duchene type of draft.

There's also the possibility that JR trades the high draft pick for some immediate defensive help.

Given the contracts that JR has handed out lately, he's clearly got that 5-year window in mind. And it's about right. Eric, Ward, Gleason, Pitkanen have about 5 more years until they start to reach that "iffy" veteran age. And Jordan, Skinner, and Faulk should be reaching their full potential sometime in the next 5 years.

3rd overall + McBain for Marc Staal + Brian Boyle + a resigned Ryan Clowe.

As long as we're between #1-7 we're in good shape. But yeah it's very much a Tavares/Duchene/Hedman draft this year with the top 3.

How exactly do we afford their contracts??? We have very little cap space next year
