Whether its right or wrong most teams will do what the need to do if the playoffs are still in sight. They don't admit defeat as easily as us fans.

You're right it should have been addressed earlier but it wasn't. I'm pretty sure they acquired him with the playoffs in mind since Lavi didn't trust neither Leighton and Boucher.

I would think most fans on this board would feel way more comfortable with Mason in net than them two regardless of what their playoff records are.

As for the out to lunch comment. That's comical coming from a guy who's been grasping at straws for stuff to complain about.
i find it amusing you draw the conclusion it is doom and gloom by my post. i guess your cant say anyting bad or have a differing opinion about the flyers otherwise it is doom and gloom.

well imo your clueless if you think mason was aquired with the playoffs in mind. why didnt they acquire him sooner than if that was the case. oh i bet columbus didnt want to move him right? if they had the playoffs in mind wouldnt they address the d first instead of a guy who isnt going to play much down the stretch? nah they would rtaher have gervais, gus, huskins and lauridson on the back end with the playoffs in mind.

grasping at straws sure why not. i guess then wasting a 3rd rd pick on maosn is grasping at straws. keep up the good work. anyway i said enjoy your lunch. comprehension issue on your end again.

Flyers announce they have re-signed Mason to a 1-yr ($1.5mill) deal. very very reasonable cap hit for them

Surprised Mason got only $1.5M. He made $3.2M this year. #Flyers

Exactly as I predicted. Standard backup money for a goalie not on an ELC.

Actually, I suggested they would give him a two year deal at 1.5m AAV. So this is even better.

Awesome cap hit. Better than the supposed 3.2M (right?).

Good. Based on his performance recently that's about all he's worth in a 64mil cap.

Good to get him signed, but can we really judge a player based on their cap hit ?

Here are some current cap hits of other backups I found on capgeek last week.

Biron makes $1.3m
Budaj makes $1.15m
Elliott makes $1.8m
Emery makes $1.15m
Fasth makes $1m
Chris Mason makles $1.5m
Vokoun makes $2m

Everybody has differing opinions on this board. That's what makes it fun posting on here. You just make assumptions about what the Flyers are going to do next before anything even happens so you can complain about it. I would call that doom and gloom. Say the Flyers really did give Gagne $3M like you said I would be right there with you complaining about it but it didn't happen and there's nothing that suggest it will at this point so it's pointless of complaining about it.

I would say the main reason why they acquired Mason at this time was to get an early look at him through pratices and the games in which he would start. It's kind of hard to get familar with him when he's playing in Columbus. I definitely think they wanted a better backup in case they made the playoffs though.

Still shocked that Mason wouldn't test the free agent waters in the summer.

If draft position and salary/cap hit were not disclosed by the team, this site probably wouldn't exist and if it did, it would be all hugs full of rainbows.

I like it compared to others. I think Fasth got a substantial raise in his next contract. Emery also was coming off of that hip surgery so he was low-balled. I think he got a good deal!

We can say for sure the Flyers got the best $1.5m Mason.

With Bryz's days numbered I guess it makes sense. He'll probably get more starts than most of those backups so I guess that's why he gets a little more money than them. I'm just glad it's under some of the numbers that were thrown around on here.

I really think Mason is going to try and turn his career around, that contract is basically a blank slate, play well next year and get a fatter cheque after. Now that he is playing in a hockey market, it might make him work harder on improving his game, rather than wallowing in self pity like he was in Columbus.

Who knows, I mean I have watch him play when he was in junior and his rookie year, he has the skills and the abilities to be "that" goalie.

Very good deal. You got a young player to take a paycut. If he tested the free agent market he wouldn't have made more than 1.5 million. This is a perfect situation for Mason. He made more money staying with the Flyers. He helps out the Flyers. He has no expectations. All the pressure is on Bryz. Mason comes in, has an off-season and the rest of this season to work on his game. If Bryz plays anywhere between this season and last Mason is going to get a lot of work and a chance to play in a big city and make a lot of money.

No guarantee it would come to that. The Flyers might have qualified him, just to keep his rights, should they decide to amnesty Bryz.

He made the smart move. Get out of Columbus. Sign a deal that will keep his millionaire status intact while he gets his game back. If he doesn't, he'll be gone next year.

Homer loves his cheap goalie makeover projects. Hopefully Mason is more like a healthy Emery...instead of a Leighton.
