Low risk deal, a bit much for a back up.

You don't have to give a qualifying offer. You only do if you want to retain their rights. If you don't give them a QO, they become a UFA.

I like it. Now hopefully he can regain his rookie season form and we can get rid of Bryzgalov

I guess I just don't understand why the Flyers were so eager to extend him.

not really

he's 24 and could still regain his form

considering he was making double that, it's a good deal

Cool, good for him. This is almost said ad nauseum, but maybe a change of scenery will benefit him. He didn't look that bad in the 3rd period against the Jets.

because if we would have waited longer, it probably would have cost us more money

Personally, I would have spent a little more time "hands on" with him, evaluate him in practices and games, talk to the coaches (goalie coach too of course) and get a feel for what they think going forward with him. Use the remainder of the year as a tryout with him and then talk extension. As opposed to beginning these talks one day after he arrived...but I'm not a GM. He's not getting his qualifying offer anyhow ($3.2 million). He had to price himself down into the market and assure himself an NHL job for next season.

For the stats lovers out there...(if I have this right)

Mason's first 24 career games: 14-9-1, 1.74 GAA, .939 save pct., 6 SO
Mason's next 198 games: 82-90-26, 3.04 GAA, .899 save pct., 13 SO

Good luck to him. Of course, CBJ and Philly are in the same division next year, so not too much.

Actually a better deal than I thought Philly could squeeze out of him. That's a significant cut in pay but given his numbers Mason was lucky to get this and not a two way deal after the season.

I wish Mason luck but until he gets over himself and straightens out his head he'll continue to be a high risk guy with a lot of potential. If he weren't as big a head case and listened to coaches he wouldn't be in this position.

Oh well, good luck Mase. Here's hoping you pay the CBJ back with a few softies when we play.

A low risk deal, I think he might work out for the flyers. If they learn their defense.

Has had some struggles and he did get decent cash for its term. Struggling tender who's now on team that has had its struggles this year. It could be idea place for Mason to turn his career around.

Wouldn't be surprised for him to do well with this 1 year deal, and then having success once again go to his head and then come back to Earth. I don't dislike the Flyers so I would hope that in this scenario they wouldn't give him a deal like the Jackets did that hamstrung us until now.

Good for Mason. Would love to see him exceed.

Hes got time on his side. Hes still only 24 years old. I mean James Reimer broke into the league at 24. Kids already got 5 years of experience. However its unfortunate that hes gotta try and pull off a miracle in philly of all places.

Same. He's had a rough time after a very good start.

It would be great to see him come back and play well.

It's 1-year and they got a fair price on him. We can evaluate him and at worse, bury the 1.5M. Just gives us something to not worry about in the offseason.

That is overpayment

I get the Flyers believe that kid could be turned around but they could have gotten a quality G on UFA market for less then that who doesn't have the failed last 4 years of Mason

Not asking to be a smart ass, I'm actually not aware of the fact... What solid backup goalies are there going to be out there at this price?
