Clowe was seeking an 8-year deal on a sign-and-trade?!

I guess you can't hold it against the guy for wanting to win the lottery...?

That's nuts, though.

Really? We're still stuck on the zero goals thing? He was in a slump. That's it. He's on pace to score 40 points (in an 82 game season) this year even with only 2 goals, which would have been his 5th straight over 40. He's always tallied more assists than goals. I think most teams would be more than happy to have a perennial 40+ point scoring power forward like Clowe. He is gonna get paid this off season.

Didn't say he was a bad player, and that I wouldn't want him on my team, but come on, if this is true, he is asking for the max term, 40-50 point guy shouldn't be getting a max term contacts. And its not like he was having an amazing year to have as a bargain chip.

Wow Ryan must be on some good drugs to think he can get $5.5 per for 8 freakin years! Either that or his agents has the largest cojones ever.

But if the Rangers sign him to this deal, who will they be trading him to in 2-3 years when they realize it was yet again a huge over payment?

Might as well start a countdown clock until the next lockout with outrageous deals like this potential one.

When I think of "elite franchise player" I think of Ryane Clowe.

The rest of you simply have no idea what you're talking about.

If Ryane Clowe was on year one of that contract this season with the kind of performance to date, his NHL career would be effectively over a la Jeff Finger.

Simply a method of making sure he would remain a UFA or he would find someone gullible enough to pay a premium for his services. He'll get big money in a few months.

So THIS is the news story where everyone turns the corner and just believes Garrioch at face value?

If true, I agree with those saying that Clowe was just trying to make sure he got to UFA, or ridiculously overpaid.

We all know he was in a slump. Its the fact that he wants an 8 year deal at or above 5.5 for being a guy whos never scored more than 24 goals, only scored more than 60 points once and is 30 years old. That would basically put him in the top 40 highest paid forwards.

I'd be resistant to give him a 4 year contract, never mind 8 years.

it'll be interesting to see if sign and trades become more of a trend in the nhl

if players want 8 years instead of 7

8 years is way too long for a guy who will probably be too slow for the NHL in 4 years time.

I strongly believe he'll get 4 for $17 million.

I'd give him half the term and 2/3 the amount of money that he's looking for.
