Let's check him for neck tumors. To be safe.

At this point, maybe the only way to save him would be to send him down to the minors for a bit? I really hate to do that, but he's laboring big time and he is unbelievably frustrated out there. The way he talks after the game you can tell he's just losing it mentally. The guy seriously needs to relax.

I never expected to him to return to the 2010-2011 version, but I thought with his intelligence and how he approaches hitters he still would be a servicible pitcher despite losing veleocity (like Pedro was). I was wrong.

It's like the last years of Steve Carlton. All the sudden it was just gone.

I question the way he's approaching hitters too. So many curveballs and changeups early in the count. It seems like he's always behind 2-0 or 2-1. I know the fastball isn't what it used to be but I think he needs to use it more.

So since that was bloody awful, posting this:

http://www.phillymag.com/articles/re...tley-phillies/

Utley is my all time favorite player and I don't think that will ever change. A lot of people don't know the real side of him so that makes this article pretty cool.

Didn't really have time to more than skim the article but will do when I get more time.

Utley will always be my favorite for one simple reason, and it really could have been any player it just happened to be Utley. When my brother and his friend were very young but not in that stage where they were getting balls thrown to them for being 5. They were at a game with his friends family. (They were maybe 10/11) Utley was throwing to warm up along the dugout to a line of girls saying "chase sign my ball, glove, other things. With this little 10 year old next to them as he walked back to the dugout, my brothers friend asked "Mr. Utley will you please sign my jersey if you have a minute."
Utley looked up and said he'd be back in a minute. Came back with a ball and a sharpie signed the jersey and ball and told him he was a good kid.

Always made me think a little higher of the guy.

This is a looong post about Utley so just be prepared:

Part of the reason why I'm so uptight this year is cause I hate the thought of the Phillies trading Utley. I want him to be a Phillie for life. Out everyone from the core since 2006 onward, he's the guy that should be given a lifetime contract. I know people will believe me too sentimental about the past, and I could give a bunch of stats or reasons Chase would be beneficial to the team over a trade for young blood (I think Amaro would mess it up anyway). But really I just love Chase and his passion for the game.

A couple of stories about Utley outside the guy on the field, one secondhand and one personal:

The first one I heard on the radio so I'm probably not going to get the details totally accurate. This is just what I remember. After someone called in and said Utley was a jerk, another man called in and told the story of how his relative had been a big Phillies fan. They went down to Clearwater to see if they could get his aunt's ashes spread on the field. The Phillies organization didn't really want to do it, so they were talking with one of the security guards about if there was any way they could make this happen. Chase happened to walk by and overhear their conversation. He asked if he could hear about her and they told him what she was like. After talking for awhile, he took the ashes of the woman personally, went back onto the field, and after a moment of silence spread them himself.

The second one is more my personal experience with him. I started doing art involving the Phillies in my senior year of college. I was hoping to give my stuff to Phillies charities but I also wanted to take pictures for a senior project I was doing. Through a whole lot of phone calls and favors, I got a pass to go on the field to take pictures during batting practice. I met a bunch of the guys that day. It was pretty cool showing them my stuff. So fast forward a year to 2011 and I got tickets to Utley's casino night he has every year. There was no way I thought he would remember me but he did. He listened when I told him about my dog who I named after him (he's had five intestinal surgeries for eating things and is somehow still alive. He's kind of dumb). I've gotten to talk to him a few times since then and he's never blown me off. And yes, he curses like a sailor, which I find hilarious. Seriously, if you ever have a chance to meet him, do it. It's totally worth it. Just be polite or you'll get the death glare

It sucks so bad to see Halladay struggle because I know how hard he works and how much he wants to win for himself and for us. Damn, he's got the work ethic of a champion. I just wish his arm could hold up. I hate hearing him get booed.

Breaking news: This team can score runs and Cliff Lee is a beast.

Let's hope Lee keeps it up!

With our starting pitching this year it's hard to be confident, even with a 7 run lead.

The sad thing is that the bullpen is probably worse

I went to the game tonight. It was beautiful weather and the Phillies were hitting like crazy. Awesome. Glad I picked the right day to go. Really funny after Mayberry hit the third homerun, Lee could not stand still in the on deck circle. He wanted to hit a homer so bad.

Its actually not though, its just that the manager continually brings in the worst of the bunch, and a guy like De Fratus that should be in there is in the minors for some reason.

That's exactly what I was thinking (although I didn't have a comparable player, but Pedro makes PERFECT sense). A guy like Halladay should be able to adjust and still compete at a high level, not Cy Young level but a level to where he is a solid second starter. Maybe grab 12-15 wins with a decent ERA. What I can see happening is Halladay hanging them up. He does not strike me as the type of guy who would go out there 30+ times a season (or however many starts guys get these days) and get shelled every time.

De Fratus 3 games 4.1 innings 0 ERA 4 Ks 0 bb
Durbin 4 games 3.1 innings 8.10 ERA (all inherited runners have scored) 4 Ks 4 bb

What the hell is Durbin still doing here?

Seriously though, it's not like De Fratus hasn't been doing this for years now. I think he's better than Aumont at this point, but there's another guy that at least deserves to get into games. His stuff is nasty.

Curious, why hasn't Stutes played? I know his ERA wasn't very good in the spring, but still.

Because Durbin is Charlie's boy.

Which is fine when it's Utley or someone good, but Durbin isn't good anymore. It's so infuriating when he keeps putting people out there that clearly don't have it when there are younger players that could probably be doing a better job.

That's the thing though, he sticks to his group of guys regardless of who they are or what they bring to the table.

Mayberry, Durbin to name two.
