Be prepared to watch Steve Mason single-handed carrying this team into the playoffs now

Most if us expect him to suck but trading for him and then signing him to a yr extension means he will get a chance to prove himself. Hopefully he turns it around, I'm just not holding my breath

Sorry for the two posts in a row

That's... vague.

I remember him having plenty of decent games on short rest and bad games following days off. My sense was that the Bobrovsky move was motivated, in part, by the belief that Bryzgalov was one of those goaltenders that wanted a yeoman's share of the work. Obviously the condensed schedule changes things a bit this year--but I don't think you bring in Leighton as the backup with the idea of playing him 25+ times a year.

Anyway, I think it is obvious that Mason will get more starts than Leighton / Boucher would have, but I'm not sure there's a point in "resting" Bryzgalov for the remaining 10 games of the year. (If you sit him that much, it is because you want to get a look at Mason, not because Bryzgalov is tired).

I'm definitely expecting Mason to look rusty tonight, this is a guy who hasn't played much lately and only had a period and a little practice time with his new team. Given that he's got his contract for next season he'll get chances but I hope no one writes him off if he has a bad start tonight.

My concern is this:

44 Kimmo Timonen - 27 Bruno Gervais
38 Oliver Lauridsen - 22 Luke Schenn
23 Kent Huskins - 29 Erik Gustafsson

When Gervais and Lauridsen are both in your top-four, I think you need to be careful of drawing too many conclusions about the play of your goaltender.

Surprised to see Mason is starting. Lavi is rolling the dice here, but it could work out well. Mason should be plenty motivated and it might motivate the team a little more too.

A regulation win tonight would be huge. They would be 3 points back of the Isles in 8th with a game in hand, 3 points back of the Rags in 7th, and potentially only 5 points back of 6th if the Sens lose. They have games against all the teams ahead of them remaining, and as many as 3 potential spots could be open to them. The playoffs are definitely still in play, they just need to win tonight.

Never would've thought this would be a top 6 defense going into the playoffs.

The past few games, Huskins and Gustafsson have been better than Gervias and Lauridsen. Shame Grossmann isnt back cause it would look alot better.

Timonen-Grossmann (I'd really like to see this)
Gustafsson-Schenn (They played a few times together and looked pretty good)
Huskins-Gervias (Huskins has looked fantastic really, and that 3rd pairing isnt too bad, even though Gervias is regressing again)

Gustafsson looked absolutely terrible playing with Gervias. Dont want to see those two together.
But I don't expect Grossmann to come back by the end of the season.

"Mixed Emotions" was in the running until those $750 ticket prices reared their ugly and outrageous heads.

I think we should all judge mason tonight with a grain of salt. To be a goalie behind this current group of defenseman ( worst in the league?) is no small task. As badly as bryz has played recently I will put some blame on the D for that.

Agreed, but if he posts a great effort we'll wonder why Bryz hasn't been able to do something similar. Thus creating an unheard of goalie controversy in Philly. I honestly think a little competition could do Bryz some good, knowing that with the new amnesty clause he could be out the door. On the other hand, it's not like he's dealt well with pressure in the past so we could see him fold completely. The likeliest of the two scenarios if Mason somehow finds his game.

Going to see the first period of this and probably the majority of the 3rd. Interested in seeing the reaction around here (regarding Mason) after the game.

I think they can take this one. Isles are a decent young squad but I think the Flyers take this one.

i have the CI pkg & watch a TON of games .... none of those goalies have had to play behind our defense, seen the turnovers, played on a team who frequently lacks effort and the high % shots we allow.

you are merely guessing what they would have done here.

the closest example of "what would another goalie do here?" is Bob.

he leaves & looks very good, while looking bad here last year.

lemme guess, it has nothing to with our team, Bob just found the magic "become a great goalie potion" during the lockout

I never said what they would do here. I said their defenses and teams are playing just as bad as ours. I just want to know why don't their save percentages match up with their goals against unlike Bryz's?

I never said anything about Bob in this thread so I don't why you even brought him.

You might not want to say that on any board but ours cause EVERYONE will disagree with you. EDM is considered to have THE WORSE defense in the NHL. They give up the 2nd most shots per game, BUT still block a ton of shots. Think about that one for a second. If you watched EDM you would know this though. They have 2 MAYBE 3 NHL defenders WHEN healthy. This is when they are healthy!

Now Buffalo gives up the most shots in the league (their team defense is considered the worse in the league) while being the 10th blocked shots. Their defense has Ehrhoff (like Timonen), Myers (playing like a 5/6 this season and getting scratched) Sekera (Coburn I guess), Pardy (like our Gervias), Pysyk (like our Gustafsson), and Weber (like Huskins). This is currently their HEALTHY defense.

Oh btw, Buffalo and Edmonton have more turnovers then we do. Edmonton has 364, Buffalo 311, we have 307 so I guess you cant use that in debates anymore.

posting their stats seems to imply they would have those stats here.

I mentioned Bob. and I brought him up as the closest thing to "what would another goalie do here?"

i HOPE Mason is a #1 stud & we have no need for Bryz.

i really do. i don't care WHO our #1 is.

i want a CUP. period.

Bob, Bryz, Mason ... i do not care ...... just 1 CUP before i die

A good sign, but Bryz has had incredible games here as well. It needs to be shown for an extended period of time. He at least needs to show that he can produce at the level Bryz has (not too difficult) to make amnestying Bryz a no-brainer. It's all about the $$$
