But he's not a lock to make it to the NHL.

Why not take the chance to package him and one of Calgary's picks (likely Calgary's 3rd in 2013) for another young, talented player who has already played in the NHL?

I am not saying that it's going to be an easy trade to make. I'm not saying there's a team or a GM out there who's willing to do it. I'm not even saying that I want to see Gaudreau in anything but Flames colours in 5 years from now.

What I am saying though, is that Calgary needs to assess the risk level of their players. I'm saying that at this point, Calgary needs a better guarantee. Trade while potential and attention level is high. Get a fantastic return. A player like Conacher or Tarasenko-level of youth and skill, who thinks that Gaudreau is even better than their player who has reached the NHL and can afford to take the risk of him possibly not developing properly when Calgary can't afford the risk.

It's just an idea, and not a well-formed one at that. But I just want to see people's opinions on this.
I wouldn't do it unless someone made a tremendous overpayment. I really wouldn't want to end up regretting trading a player with that kind of upside.

If we don't trade Gadreau I sure hope he eats and works out like mad because he has the skill to make the bigs but the little guys in the league make up for their size with strength (eg Briere).

Unless we are getting an unreal player back or a top 5 pick in this draft, I would hang onto him.

I think that would be the intent. Trade him to say Philly with Pittsburgh's 1st to get the 5th overall?

Not sure if I'd do it. But I'd have to consider it.

That was kind of my thinking in the other thread.

Our pick is a top 5, if we can package the Pens pick with JG for another top 5, I think I'd do it.

I don't think I would move JG short of a top 5 pick. He is a boom or bust prospect but if he makes it he will be a star.

Well, it's a moot point now but I appreciate the input. Thought it would have been more polarizing, but I'm glad it's not.

I am as big on Gaudreau as anybody but he would never be able to get a top 5 pick for him and Pittsburgh pick. He wouldn't return a top 5 pick if he was packaged with the Blues pick. He has a ton of potential but his trade value is being very overrated. I doubt his trade value is any higher than a 2nd.

Which is why he is the type of prospect you hold onto at almost any cost. I have him as more untradeable than Baertschi for the simple fact that with Baertschi the Flames could likely get an adequate return for his potential.

Id certainly think about it IF

one of Barkov, Drouin, Mackinnon or Jones was still around. I guess Monohan would be acceptable too.

We should trade him for a 2nd. Maybe we could even get a 2nd and 3rd?

A conditional 1st.

Everything must be traded for 1sts. I want to see Bettman blow a fuse when he goes on stage and says "The Calgary Flames have the next pick" for the 20th time.

With limited call ups before the end of the season, who else would everyone like to see get a few games with the big club?

I wouldn't mind Breen getting a couple games and send Carson back down. I have heard nothing but good things about him but haven't really seen him play. I also think Nemisz should get a couple games.

Aliu, Breen, Nemisz and maybe Lamb would be ones I'd like to see.

Also, haven't the recall rules been relaxed this season?

Breen is done for the season. But as long as people are getting injured it should depend on the position of the injured player.

If Stajan is out, call up Street.

If a defenseman gets hurt, play Babchuk because no healthy AHL defenseman is under contract except Lamb and he is not ready yet.

If a winger is hurt give Nemisz a chance.

If another bottom 6 grinder is hurt, give Bancks a chance. He is not big enough and not talented enough, but the kid is a heart and soul player and you just never know, he could be this decades Steve Begin.

Word on the street is Gaudreau is returning to BC next year not turning pro yet. Probably good thing, he needs to bulk up a bit more

That's not a shock. His dad said something to the media earlier in the year about him finishing his college eligibility, plus his brother is joining the Eagles next year I believe. I think the only way he was going pro next year was if the Eagles won another National Championship and he won the Hobey Baker.
