No excuses now if they don't make the playoffs!

Unless they collapse, they should make it. Three wins in the last 5 games will do the trick, and they do have 3 non-playoff teams they are facing. They've been the best team in the AHL over the last couple of months, so they can definitely do well. Even if they win just 2 out of the 5 remaining games, they should still be ok, but that would be cutting it awfully close.

NON-PLAYOFF OPPONENTS
M&Ms
ADK
Albany

PLAYOFF OPPONENTS
Springfield
Portland

On Friday, Norfolk and Hershey are both facing good teams, while the Whale is facing a weak team, so by the end of the night, they could be in a very strong position if they win and one of those two teams loses.

Kreider - Newbury - Segal
Hrivik - Miller - Thomas
Haley - Mash - Palm
Bourque - Tessier - Ferriero/Fast

Each one of these players is a threat at the AHL level who can play on most AHL first or second lines.

Assuming they do make the playoffs, how does it look like they'll fair? Could they be looking at a Calder win?

Looks good on paper. Somewhat like their parent club.....

I don't think they have the defense to win it all though. McIlrath and a bunch of no names.

Hartford looks better on paper than the Rangers, and has been doing very well the last couple of months. They look to be very strong going into the playoffs. I wish teams would have 5 lines and not 4 because we'd do real well there.

But, as Kersh said, how would the defense fair?

The addition of Bickel helped a lot. The addition of either Gilroy or Hammer would help some more. Gilroy would help replace (and improve upon) Parlett.

Gilroy, Vernace, Pyett are a very, very good trio of offensive defensemen.

Bickel, Klassen and McIlrath are also excellent as defensive defensemen.

If Gilroy goes down to the AHL, the team will have no real holes.

If you add Nicholls, MSC, McColgan and Lindberg here you are quite stacked. No? Noreau probably gets a look on D. Gilroy will be waived once Staalsy is back. I do think Lindberg goes directly to the big club though, just a feeling... Has our AHL team looked this good on paper for many years?

If Gilroy or Hammer goes down, which is very likely, I don't see how Noreau starts this year. He would have to wait until next season.

McColgan won't make the team. There's no space for Jean. There's barely space for Yogan. McColgan is not as good as the two of them. He'll go down to play with Wilson in the ECHL. And that's not even counting that Lindberg is likely to join the team.

I don't think Lindberg makes the Rangers, I do think he will play an integral role for Hartford. I guess Tessier will sit if Lindberg joins Hartford, which is a shame because Tess is a good player.

BBkers and/or Ola; what's Lindberg's time frame over the next few weeks?

The SEL Finals start this Saturday is it? When is the latest they can go until?

Also, will Lindberg have the World Championship commitments like Fasth had/has or can he come directly to North America?

Thanks again, I forget with all these dates and things going on.

Also, for anyone else what's the deal with McColgan and Nicholls? I know they have the Memorial Cup but since that team got knocked out, are they just gonna have practices/bag skates with each other for the next 6 weeks or will there be a recess where they can come play here? If I was a player I'd go crazy with that wait time.

Yes, the SEL finals start on April 13 (Saturday). Game 2 is on Sunday and then they play every other day so if there's a Game 7 it will be on April 24.

With Lindberg, MSC and Yogan, this team will go from an embarrassment that it was until January to being an embarrassment of riches. I am not sure who seats. Ferriero? Tessier? And after those two? Mash? Yogan? Bourque? All of them really deserve to play.

Depends on what the mentality of Kenny G/Rangers brass is.

If it's for pure development, then the young guys play. If they want a deep playoff run, then Ferriero and Mash have to play. Those guys have been great foot soldiers this year being jettisoned between Hartford and New York.

I think a lot has to do with if the Varsity Club makes the postseason. Then they can call up a taxi squad with the extra guys.

As for Yogan, isn't he out at least another 3-4 weeks with a broken hand?

And is Fasth going back to Sweden this weekend or does he continue to heal/strengthen his knee sprain in Connecticut? I don't know if he'll play again this year if he's staying in Connecticut unless they have a super deep run. Gotta let his sprain heal 100% and not keep on re-spraining it. It stinks that he's not on the ice now, but at least he's getting comfortable with North America, the facilities, teammates, etc. It was pretty cool when he scored that goal seeing how happy Kreider was for him. That's the kind of stuff not talked about this is also really essential to development.

The Whale have signed Barclay Goodrow, former captain of the Brampton Battalion, to an ATO.

Considering that our top prospects like Kreider, Miller, Thomas and Hrivik (and later Fast and Lindberg) are guaranteed to be in the lineup, I am certain they want to go deep. They will not take away late playoff games from them just to give early playoff games to Yogan, Bourque and Noreau. Even a guy like Talbot - you want to see how he fairs in the playoffs with a stronger lineup both attacking and defending him.

AHL playoffs is the closest thing you are going to get to the NHL. The bottom half of the league is gone, the play is physical, fewer mistakes are made, many NHL teams that didn't make the playoffs sent down their rookies and borderline players.

For the Whale in particular, given where they will finish (#7, maybe #8), to make the Calder Cup Finals, they will need to go through all the top 3 teams in the East. To beat the top AHL teams, some of which will be getting reinforcements from the NHL, would be a real accomplishment and a phenomenal lesson for our prospects.

The only thing I remember about this guy was that Ben Thomson knocked him out so bad in a fight a few seasons back he almost needed the stretcher.

It's too bad this story is behind the ESPN paywall:

Still painful to watch.

Not as painful as his skating from what I remember. Very choppy, slow accelerator, seen about a hundred of these 'power forward' type prospects coming out of NA over the years.

BUT, he's still young enough where a late progression would not be shocking, that's gotta be why teams were interested.

Didn't hurt that he lived off having one of the best looking 2014 eligible Centers in Blake Clarke as his pivot

BN, I know nothing about him but reading up on him, any possibility he turns into a Dale Weise player?

Not an expert on Goodrow, but they seem to be fairly similar. Better shooters than passers, better along the boards than skating in open ice, similar size. Goodrow had 104 points in 122 games in his final two seasons, while Weise had 93 points in 120 games.

That said, Weise showed a lot of progress from the age of 18 to 23. He was no longer the same player in a few years. I don't think that's the case so far with Goodrow.

I never knew Dale Weise was gonna be a Dale Weise player, ya know?

I see the similarities, but Like I said, I've seen literally hundreds of these guys come and go. Overcoming the holes in their game is very difficult, even if your positive attributes are working for you, eventually they hit a wall. Again, I think teams gamble on the positives coming from a power forward body and just hope for the best.

Goodrow was in our prospect camp this year, so the organization has been scouting him for some time. He's big and tough with a good shot, but can't skate. If he looks good in his stint with the Whale (if he even sees the ice) then the team may take a flier on him in the late rounds.

Isn't he an UFA if he just signed to a PTO and 20 years old???
