I would rather the money going into potholes be spent on completely rebuilding roads that are way past their lifetime, but eat up a majority of maintenance budgets.

I see they are dipping into the MSI now.

Always figured it would happen. Was just a matter of when, not if.

A city run by Mayor Diotte would make that a top priority.

Yes, southbound south of Argyll. I've never seen a bigger pothole. It was a monster.

Edmonton is more and more like Springfield everyday.

I guess that makes Calgary Shelbyville.

Not sure what this means. The MSI is set up specifically to fund infrastructure projects in municipalities.

http://www.municipalaffairs.alberta.ca/msi.cfm

So it was just a matter of when we dipped into our infrastructure fund to... pay for our infrastructure? Well, obviously.

I'm not trying to be rude, it's just a weird comment to make.

The sidewalks and roads in the older neighbourhoods one of which I live in are sheer and utter disgraces. The morons once again get taken to the wood shed. I'd like to take mayor mandel for a short rid around my neighbourhood but only if it is in his car. I love how indignant he gets at any opposiiton as the citizens get the shaft up the rump once again.

Redford has vowed not to help with this at all. I can't see this getting finished.

It is true that the city don't budget for road repair each year.

The city just has a giant chequing account to take money out of and they spent it all on this arena already.

Oh well. Maybe next year.

I've been saying all along that they'd be using the MSI, so it came as no surprise to me at all...How people are shocked by this is confusing to me, as it's exactly what the MSI was partly designed for.

People keep forgetting that it's an ARENA, and will only be used as a hockey rink for around 40-60 days a year. Mandel was right with his frustration in opponents making it "Us vs. Katz". What idiotic crap!

Correction...Redford has vowed to not directly help fund the arena. That's political speak for saying "we'll figure out a way to get it done indirectly".

Diotte is just playing the perfect game here, pandering to his constituence, feigning outrage over something that he knew was coming for months, hell, a year.

Yeah LOL pandering to his constituents who are telling him we re getting the shaft. What a joke post. The same stuff the pro arena people all bleated would not happen and of course now we should accept it because it was going to happen all along.

I'm well aware.

There was a long running argument around here that the MSI was off limits. That it was already budgeted out and the city would have to extract funding from the province by some other method.

That is obviously not the case.

..And that's through infrastructure. I believe the LRT connection is included in the cost of the arena, not to mention the pedway.

Anyone blaming the arena project for the U of A budget cuts needs to look at the framework of the arena deal and learn where their money actually goes. The provincial government has repeatedly refused to fund the project and education falls under provincial jurisdiction. None of these cuts have ANYTHING to do with the arena. Unless of course this post was facetious.

As for anyone saying they'd rather potholes and roads be fixed with the money, we all would but unfortunately the return on your investment with roads is pretty bad generating a whopping 0 dollars. Sadly, that is a luxury because you end up dumping that money into essentially making your citizens happier. At least the arena development will create jobs and help the economy a little.

Just my opinion on the matter.

People want to complain about roads go ask your council member why the city is stuck in it's own ways and too stupid to take advice from the people that build the roads.
