According to Capgeek, we've got 8 million for next year, assuming we let all our UFAs go. If the hike from McBain to Marc Staal is an issue, we could try Pitkanen instead.

Given the contracts that JR has handed out lately, he's clearly got that 5-year window in mind. And it's about right. Eric, Ward, Gleason, Pitkanen have about 5 more years until they start to reach that "iffy" veteran age. And Jordan, Skinner, and Faulk should be reaching their full potential sometime in the next 5 years.

3rd overall + McBain for Marc Staal + Brian Boyle + a resigned Ryan Clowe.
3rd overall + a valuable trading piece for one-eyed Marc and two guys who have combined for 32 goals over the past 2 seasons?

No thank you.

I'm guessing the Rangers would say.

"A top pairing defensemen in his prime who is signed for 2 more years for a marginal defenseman who has been a regular scratch and a #3 pick? And you want the Rangers to throw in some more? No thanks".

Knowing JR and Sather and their trade histories, if/when there is a trade for Marc Staal, expect Carolina to over-pay for him.

A defensive defenseman entering (or already) in his prime and two guys that hit and hit hard.

Nah, Canes don't need that at all.

The brother act aside, I'm not sure MStaal is the kind of guy the Canes D is sorely lacking. He'd make a nice addition but on the NYR alone, I'd much rather have McDonagh. Of course that's not to say that either is available.

A defenseman coming off a significant injury and two more guys that haven't been able to score in the last two seasons.

Of course they need those types of players, but trading a top 3 pick + a valuable asset like McBain for three question marks is not the type of risk this franchise can afford to take. What if Marc isn't the same player? What if neither of those players never regain their scoring touch and don't become anything more than a dime a dozen bottom 6ers? I don't like it. IF they were to trade their 3rd, I'd want something more concrete in return.

There's risk in every trade.

But if we're worried about Staal's injury, just switch McBain with Pitkanen. Questionable injury-risk for questionable injury-risk, both at around the same cap.

As for Clowe and Boyle, even if they're bottom 6ers, they're bottom 6ers we don't have and desperately need. That heavy, physical forechecking kind.

Semin - Staal - Tlusty
Skinner - Staal - Ruutu
Dalpe - Nash - Clowe
Dwyer - Boyle - Clowe

Staal - Faulk
McBain - Gleason
Murphy - Harrison
MAB

Ward
Peters

Double shift Clowe and run 7 d to get MAB exclusive PP time.

I don't know about you, but I like that defense and that bottom 6 much better than the same thing we have this year + Jones

I've coveted Boyle for a while now- he's no scoring machine, but that's not his job anyway. He seems to embrace that he doesn't need to score, he just needs to be a pain in the ass to play against. And at his size, that's some serious pain. I'd take him over anyone in the Canes' bottom six.

Skinner and our 1st rounder 2013, to NYR for Marc Staal. Why wait?

We have a cracker jack defense, and MAB is the worst of the worst of the worst.

I'm not on the Bellemore hype train by any means, but I'd rather see him suiting up for 60+ games than have to watch MAB in our own zone. Even when compared to Murphy's NHL debut, MAB is terrible. At least Murphy has the head to play competent transition defense; their boardwork is frighteningly similar.

Hefty price to pay. What specifically do you see MStaal adding? For me, he's steady and his offense continues to moderately improve but he's not the physical, shot-blocking, always positionally sound D that is sorely lacking.

In my book, you'd better be getting that kind of D for that kind of package. If Marc Staal were Marc Smith, that trade makes no sense. Too much attachment to the cachet of the Staal name. I'd pass.

Because at the time, I had forgotten about Bellemore and thought the choice was between MAB and Sanguinetti.

And between those two, at least MAB has a chance to improve our PP

So the Devils might be the only team that's as disappointing as the Canes this year.

Yeah, Calgary and Colorado have been equally awful, but the Canes and Jersey had playoff expectations that they haven't come close to reaching.

I still remember how much devils fans were defending Zajac and his hefty new contract early in the season. "Well, he's not scoring but he's doing everything else and we're winning. Totally worth his contract. You know nothing about hockey blah blah blah."

On the Clowe thing, why would he sign a deal to come here without having played here or with anyone on the roster................unless we really overpay him. He'd be better off going to UFA

One of the TV guys, last night during the Devils game, was hinting that Lou usually doesn't tolerate these results, and that a coaching change was probably coming soon.

Didn't Lou firs the coach about a week before the playoffs started once, because he felt the players weren't adequately prepared?

Yeah, and that coach has since racked up a .617 record, a Jack Adams and a Stanley Cup.
