Marian Gaborik laughs with Minnesota Wild teammate Pavol Demitra during a lunch at the Penzion Royal Restaurant in Trencin, Slovakia, on Aug. 10.

Minnesota Wild star Marian Gaborik is already a hero in his native Slovakia. The next time he comes home, he dreams of bringing back a souvenir: the Stanley Cup.

TRENCIN, Slovakia — The hometown skyline vanishes from the rear-view mirror of Marian Gaborik's cherry-red Ferrari. The Minnesota Wild's fastest, richest and most gifted player buries the speedometer at 295 kph — or a mere 185 mph to the metric novice — as he rockets toward the Carpathian Mountains.

Summer vacation is dwindling, but this joyride has just begun.

Roaring down a straightaway on Slovakia's E75 freeway, all you hear is the crescendo of a 483-horsepower engine and a dashboard radar showing he is free to abuse the posted 130 kph speed limit.
What a complete. Freaking. Imbecile.

Evidently not. I'm sorry, people, I'm trying to develop a more positive personal opinion of Gaborik. I really am. But every time I read something like this, I go right back to thinking he's got serious maturity and decisionmaking problems. To me, that passage was the most significant part of the entire article, the rest of which is just the standard month-before-the-season-starts fluff piece. All I can do is just shake my head and wonder when this 24-year old child is ever going to grow up.

talk about over-reaction....

he's a kid let him live his life...geez

He has been racing cars like the article says and knows how to handle a car, and the roads he's going very fast on, i'm sure aren't jam packed with cars, probably outside the city a long ways.

Bottom line is, it's his life, if he messes it up, it's on him. Live how you want to.

He's not a kid, he's a grown man. The fact that he acts like a kid doesn't make him any less a grown man - it just makes him a childish grown man. I don't care how good a driver you are, I don't care how wide open the roads are, anyone who drives 185 miles an hour on the open road is a complete idiot. Period.
