That's a pretty big exaggeration. First - see my user name lol. At the peak of his ridiculous goal scoring pace early this season, some were saying he's a legitimate top 6 player. But there was also a conversation around this -

"If I had to explain to someone why David Clarkson is a good hockey player, I don't think I'd be able to do it."

All people could really come up with was - gritty style, good along the boards, and good at deflections. That's seriously ALL he is good at. Every other skill is poor-to-mediocre.

I'd implore everyone to ignore the Clarkson-bashing that my fellow Devils fans like to engage in.

Clarkson is a very good complementary player who brings a unique skill set. He's good for 25-30 goals and will control the puck down low, however some people will look at that goal production and expect him to be a on a top line. He shouldn't be.

Slot him as your 2nd or 3rd line right winger, don't expect the world, and you'll be satisfied with his production.

I think that was my quote, actually. Haha.

This is true though. His skillset is not very tangible. He just has a knack for creating space and being in the right place at the right time.

Bet the farm he signs with the Leafs.

I know a guy who knows somebody close to him, and he has never hid his attraction to the Leafs.

4mil x 4years

Gives us a Gary Roberts type after all these years

Basically what you're saying is it comes down to hockey smarts. I could see that. I don't think he'll be a 30 goal scorer again, but if I could get a player like him for about 3.25 mill a year at most, I'd do it.*

However, I think some team overpays him 4+ million, possibly 5 and he gets his payday. I see him as a more of a goal scoring version of Brandon Dubinsky. They both take dumb penalties here and there because of their style of play and emotion level and neither one will wow you with hockey smarts, but are versatile players who can do the small things that help you win.

Supply and demand are going to mean a big pay day for him. In reality, I don't think he's worth much more than what he's making right now. He's likely going to get more than $4 million from someone. I'm guessing a 4 year $16 million deal will float across his agents desk at some point.

He's a secondary offensive player. He's not going to create offense for others, but can finish off what others create for him.

I would say something around a 4 yr$14M would be a good price for him. $5M per is TOO MUCH.

My friend personally knows Clarkson, hangs out with him all the time at the bar when he is in TO, golfs with him etc.

From what I understand it is NJ or Toronto as the only options unless someone stupid overpays.

Gotta think David Jones is a comparator here, so probably a bit more than 4M a year.

I agree with people saying teams might pay 4.5-5 out of desperation.

If he ever does he forces it into a turnover

After 2 periods of the Bruins-Devils game

Im down to 2.5 million max. 4 Turnovers and 3 passes he couldnt control. That plus no hits and fightsm zero chances and a stupid penalty.

edit: Up to 6 turnovers. Old Clarkson would fight and try to spark the team. His goal scoring has gotten to him. He no longer does what made him a goal scorer.

Someone take his rights for a 7th , please.

McKenzie said he will easily get 5 million per year on the open market.

I think that is insane. A team will regret doing that. Clarkson has had only 1 season where he scored 40 plus points.

He should sign for 3-3.5m/yr if he stays with the Devils. On the open market, maybe 4m/yr from a team that is desperate for some grit in the top 6.

He looks like a guy who will get overpaid. Clarkson is a very very good 3rd line winger, more of a tweener who can also play a support role in the top 6.

Centres should get more money than wingers, wingers dont impact the game to the same extent. A typical 3rd line C / tweener C that can put up ~40-45 points while playing physical/defensive hockey, tend to get around 4-4.5M (Fisher, Legwand, Laich, etc. except these guys have shown the ability to put up 50-55 pts). Since Clarkson is a winger, he should get less than that. Id say a "fair" deal is around 3.5M. But I think he'll likely get 4.5-5.0M/year.

I'm a bit wary of Clarkson because I think he could get $5 mil per on the market and I don't think it would be worth it. On top of that, if he makes it to free agency I could easily see him in a Leafs jersey and at $5 mil per well...likely not the best contract.

Absolutely awful. Will never play PK or be out there in a big situation. Zero hockey IQ and he just clears the puck down the ice for an icing every single time
