Because the lockout was absolutely about limiting the cap-hits of six year contracts.

Ah, the Wings prospect expert.

Nobody is calling him a sure thing. But it's more likely than not he is a starting caliber goaltender in 3 or 4 years. Then we have to deal with Howard's contract or another 2-3 years.

Sad but true.

It's alos funny cus it's true.

Schneider and Pavelec were RFAs. Not comparables.

That made me laugh.

My guess on another thread was 5mX4y, so this proposed deal sounds overgenerous.

This would be one of, if not the worst, contracts ever given out. I'm not big on trashing a contract at all but this is just way too much. IMO, 4 years, 4M is the max for this guy.

That sound you hear is Mike Smith jumping for joy and squeeling with glee.

Ugh. Since when do the Wings start brutally overpaying their own guys?

The only comparable player skill is Pavlec, and that's not a good thing.

Lol.

It would look bad on paper for now but definitely not one of the worst or worst ever.

Seriously.

There will be/have been more worse contracts every summer, inc. this one. I'm sure about that.

When we stopped being one of the best destinations to play. Not a legit cup contender anymore.

Howie has the leverage here.

Goalie contracts are getting way too inflated. So happy the Sens locked down Anderson for a reasonable cap hit.

I don't mean to pile on here but that seems like too much for a goalie of Howards caliber.

Its not horrible but both the term and cap hit are higher than what most people expected I think.

I don't even think he'll be a starter at the end of it but we'll see. This is just one of those you look at and just can't even understand what they were thinking...at all. It's not like he is coming off a finals appearance or something.

I'd be ok with the cap hit if it was for 4 years.

And ok with the term if it was for 4.5 per or so.

The cap hit is not an issue...the problem is the term. Howard will be ages 29-35 during this deal.

Yeah, if it were one or the other I think it would be a fair deal.

Nothing is finalized yet so maybe it will end up being better than reported.

It wouldn't be a home town discount, but you're right. Howard is a career .917 and contrary to popular belief it hasn't been behind such a great defensive team. This deal takes him through his prime.

Howard's a late bloomer, so the age is not exactly the problem. Flexibility with goaltending could be though, but I hope there's no full NTC or NMC or anything like that.

Why? Dude's pretty average and lots of goalies available. I wouldn't bother giving him a long-term deal personally. Resigning yourself to 6 years of mediocre goaltending. To be fair, that's never hurt Detroit in the past...

Lock the asset, trade when Mrazek is ready.

Don't like the term. All caphits will be high in the future for 1st goalie or 1st line player that's kind nothing that you can do for that.
