Forget this year. How should the roster look in 13/14?

A lot of people say to blow the whole team up, move up in the draft, etc. etc. It's been said nearly all season (more like half season) long. I want changes, but I'd like to keep some people on the roster. Just thought I'd share what I think next years starting line up should look like. I'd like to see yours too. Feel free to share (FYI : How these players I'm about to mention are acquired...is yet to be determined, lol)

Vanek-Hodgson-Iginla
Foligno-Ennis-Clarkson
Leino-Grigorenko-Ott
Larsson-Porter-Kaleta

Myers-McNabb
Ehrhoff-Sekera
Weber-Babchuk

Holtby
Hackett

your turn

Stopped at Iginla, since the chances of that happening are in the negatives.

A ) Regier will be signing depth veteran options to short term deals on the cheap. Not Jarome

B ) in what world would Jarome Iginla, a veteran on the last stretch of his career who's looking to try to hop on with a contender to get his one and only Cup, view the Buffalo Sabres as the team in prime position to get him said cup?

My roster would look similar to the one you're seeing now, with the addition of a few younger options and maybe a depth vet or two

You just never know. But you're probably right. You'll notice Miller, Stafford and Gerbe are not there. IMO,it's time they moved on from those guys. Good players, just not good enough for a Cup Run.

As long as the roster features the majority of Grigorenko, Girgensons, Larsson, Armia, Pysyk, Myers, Sekera, McNabb, Ennis and Foligno, I don't care.

I only want these guys to grow and develop properly.

And honestly, having a young team playing inconsistent hockey that might end up one day being a very good team... Is still way better than having a mediocre team playing mediocre hockey destined for perennial mediocrity.

I would start by looking at what we have assuming prospects end up where they project.

XXX - Grigs - XXX
Ennis - CoHo - Armia
Leino - Larsson - Foligno
Danny Cat - Girgs - Kalata ??

Myers - XXX
Erhoff - Sekera
McNabb - Pysyk

XXX
Enroth/Hackett

That is assuming that we let Miller, Vanek, and Stafford all walk for nothing. I am aware that this will not happen but it is useful for looking into the future. I dont know if Kaleta will be here in two years or if the wear will make him hang up the skates. Basically, we have the same needs as most other teams at this point; a top line winger, a solid #2 D-man, and a top tier starting Goalie. Players might do better but I am taking a middle ofthe road approach for their development.

Edit: Nevermind, I read this as 2014-2015 not 2013-2014. I need more coffee.

After watching Grigorenko in the Q, I don't think he is going to be NHL ready next season. It sucks because he can't play in the AHL, but he's got a lot to work on.

Keep Grigs in the Q then. No need to rush him along, and he certainly isn't ready yet. It's a shame he can't play in the AHL though.

I doubt Darcy burns another year on his contract, he'll be pushed through probably. I really think this decision will be what Darcy wants to do and nothing to do with Grigorenko or Rolston.

Following the OP... this is my lineup, with how the players are aquired is yet to be determined:

Vanek - Crosby - Malkin
Ovechkin - Kane - St. Louis
Stamkos - Backstrom - Hall
Laraque - Worrell - Grand Pierre (on the we'd come out of retirement line to play with those guys)

Really, Sabres should look like:

Vanek - Hodgson - Armia
Leino - Grigorenko - Ennis
XXXX - Larrson - Ott
Flynn - Porter - Foligno

Sekera - Erhoff
Myers - XXXXX
McNabb - Pysyk

Hackett
Enroth

Ott - Larsson - Leino
Foligno - Kuznetsov - Armia
Flynn - Porter - Kaleta
Tropp

Ehrhoff-Myers
McNabb-Pysyk
Weber-Sekera

I don't want Adam Pardy near this team for one more season.

I would love to have the chance to get Drouin but I'm going to be a realist and guess we pick around number 7. If that is the case then I want Darnell Nurse. Our defense is a mess and he is going to be a stud. Won't be NHL ready for a year or two but that's fine with me. With the Minnesota pick I'm hoping they pull the trigger on Jason Dickinson. He's a big winger who can complement some of our more skilled centers. He should be available into the 20's.

As far as trades go, I think Miller is going to be a trade deadline guy next year and will still be on the team opening day 2013. I don't see Vanek going anywhere either.

So with that said, our lineup next year won't reflect this year's draft for my post or much in terms of trades.

Vanek-Hodgson-Leino
Ennis-Grigorenko-Foligno
Ott-Larsson-Stafford or cheap vet to replace him
Scott-Girgensons-Kaleta

Ehrhoff-Myers
Sekera-Weber
Pysyk-McNabb

Miller
Enroth

Armia will hopefully be the first call-up.

Don't you dare play with my heart! Seriously though, the guy would be the perfect locker room presence for this young group.

Would he want to come here and do we need another one dimensional forward? I'd be fine with a short term deal I guess.

Vanek-Hodgson-tropp 1st line
Ennis-Briere-Leino. Easy minutes
Ott-shutdown center-foligno. 2 way
Flynn-Larsson-kaleta. 4th line

Sekera-Myers
Ehrhoff-XXX
Pysyk-Weber

Hacket
Enroth

Trade miller for a young top 4 D and trade stafford for a young two way center (burmistrov?)

Umm just out of curiosity but that's two posts now with Tropp on the first line. Anyone care to explain? Perhaps I'm missing something.

Vanek-hodgson-tropp was a great line at the end of last season and I'm a big fan of tropp

They were a line. 'Great line' is where we'll disagree. Vanek was brutal, CoHo was a rookie and Tropp was unexpectedly effective, but that line was by no means great.

Reading some of these predictions, I'd be furious if Larsson was on the 4th line. For his supposed talent and potential, he's either 2nd/3rd or in the AHL.

I don't expect much out of next season either, so I also don't expect any UFA signings unless they are a max of two year contracts. That means 34-35 yr old guys who can't command longer term, maybe a bottom six FW or bottom four D-man. Of course, whether Vanek and Miller are still here is probably mostly up to them, and I won't hazard a guess as to how that turns out. So with who's here now...

Vanek-Hodgson-Tropp...Tropp and Ott could flip-flop, insert Adam if Vanek gets traded
Leino-Larsson-Ott...most of Leino's salary has already been paid and the cap won't be a problem, hope Larsson can start
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford...if Stafford gets traded insert Flynn
Scott-Porter-Kaleta...no harm in keeping Scott since he won't be taking a rookie's place in the line-up
Gerbe...I hope he gets traded but it probably doesn't matter if they keep him for his last year under contract

Sekera-Myers
Ehrhoff-Sulzer...Sulzer on a two year deal just to fill in until McNabb and McCabe
Weber-Pysyk
???...any one or two veteran D-men will do here, even Pardy on a one year deal for less than 2 mil

Miller-Enroth...insert Hackett if Miller gets traded

Again, I don't see the point in sinking any money into the roster this summer. Next season is really just a bridge for 2014-2015, buying development time for Grigorenko, Girgensons, Armia, McNabb, McCabe, etc. A lot depends on how they come along and if Regier can acquire a top player or two in the draft. If Vanek and Miller get traded of course they could return a top NHL-ready prospect as well.

Would larsson be a servicable shutdown center in the NHL next season? That would fill a big hole

Larsson is pretty good defensively yeah, should end up as a 2nd center for us. But as a Swede i'd love to see him in first line Also not impossible he'll wear C on jersey in some years, good leader..

Also want to say i want to see Enroth/Hackett with Ullmark as starter in a few years Played crazy good in playoffs here in Sweden and now playing in national team. If i recall right he's also in the World Cup team for this year.

Link for Ullmark: http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=19760
