He's never been the #1 pick in my mind and I've seen some scouts describe him as "a ghost" in some of his games thus far in the playoffs, which matches up with how he'd be at times with the NTDP.

No thanks.

Believe it or not, they said the EXACT same thing about Erik Johnson at the time. I don't necessarily think Seth Jones will be the next Erik Johnson the player, but he is very much Erik Johnson the prospect at the moment.

I rather have a Toews, J.Staal, Kessel and Bäckström like player before a Johnson like player. Defenders usually need longer to develop. That doesn't mean he is a bad prospect, with any due respect, but NHL-capable forward abilities usually just show up earlier. You can still get very good defensemen out of draft round 2 and 3.

Jones for sure. MacKinnon is arguably the 3rd best forward in the draft, it would be ridiculous to take him no. 1.

They said the same thing about EJ.

You don't go first overall in your draft year by not being an elite prospect.

I've watched him play, I haven't seen anything that indicates he's going to be the next Karlsson/Subban. He reminds me a bit too much of Myers.

Why even torture ourselves by speculating on this question?

"Buffalo luck" will never permit us to win the draft lottery.

We didn't even win back in 2005 when we had as many lottery balls as anyone, but instead of getting Crosby we picked 13th and got superstar Marek Zagrapan.

If we didn't win it when we had the maximum odds, we're certainly not going to win with ~4% odds from the 7th or 8th position.

Why wouldn't Colorado just call our bluff? If I'm Colorado, I wouldn't give up anything for the pick if the Avs are at #2. I'd say, "I'd be thrilled with MacKinnon. Go ahead and take Jones. We'll get our elite defenseman when we trade O'Reilly."

MacKinnon is arguably better than every single forward in the draft, too. I could also say:

Drouin is arguably the 3rd best forward in the draft, it'd be ridiculous to take him #1.

Nicushkin is arguably the 3rd best (or worse) forward in the draft, it'd be ridiculous to take him #1.

Barkov is arguably the 3rd best forward in the draft, it'd be ridiculous to take him #1.

And on and on...

If we're rewarding Jones for being tops among his position group, why don't we just consider Fucale, too? We wouldn't, of course, but that seems to be the principle you're sticking to.

Definitely MacKinnon, but it wouldn't surprise me if DR went Jones.

This is where I am, too, which is why I hope we pick behind Colorado or Florida, both of whom would take Jones, I think.

MacKinnon. You don't pass up on a #1 center. A franchise center can make players want to sign here. It makes life easier for other forwards, as they draw weaker competition.

Because the forward is a much safer bet than the D. MacKinnon is all but guaranteed to be a top line NHL player with elite skating. Jones could just as easily be the next Erik Johnson as he could be a franchise defenseman, which isn't a bad player, but it's certainly not good value with a 1st overall pick. With how rarely the Sabres pick high historically, we can't really afford a miss there. We need game-breaking offensive talent, we need speed, and MacKinnon would help tremendously in that regard.

I know this is a bit of a tangent, but...

Is the drop-off after the top three really that severe this year? I don't pay as much attention to this as some, so I was just curious.

came here to post this, the chances of us getting the #1 pick are almost the same as us making the playoffs at this point

So if we take Mac, which centre do we get rid of? Grigs isn't a bottom 6 type, neither is Hodgson and both will probly be here next season. Larsson could be ready for a spot, Porter has earned a spot and Ennis has been the most consistent. Even if it isn't an issue at the beginning of next season, it could be by the end.

X - Mac - X
X - Hodgson - X
X - Larsson - X

Ennis, Grigs and Girgs moved to the wing.
