I would not trade a top 2 pick. I expect the Flames to pick 3rd or 4th. And the move down would be 2 spots at most and only done in order to land another 1st round pick (to try and use to trade up). The goal would be a quantity of quality.

Roy @ 3 yrs/$15M ($5M/yr)
Clarkson @ 2 yrs/$8M ($4M/yr)
Ryan Whitney @ 1 yr/$2M

I like who you'd sign/re-up, but the proposed contracts seem a touch generous:

Backlund - 2 yrs/$4M (2M per)
Brodie - 2 yrs/$3M (1.5M per)
Butler - 2 yrs/$3.75M
Cundari - 2 yrs/$2.5 ($1.25M per)
Bouma - 1 yr/$750k
McGratz - 1 yr/$750k
Joey Mac - I yr/$1M

If we can get lucky enough to rid ourselves of Cammy bundled with a pick and/or prospect for another 1st (this year OR next), and we can use the money to sign Nathan Horton if we can lure him here; draft Nathan MacKinnon with our 1st pick in this year's draft, and you could potentially have something along the lines of:

Tanguay - Roy - Iginla
Baertschi - Backlund - Horton
Hudler - Stajan - Stempniak
Glencross - MacKinnon - Clarkson
Horak - Reinhart/Bouwma - Jackman/McGratz

Giordano - Wideman
Brodie - Whitney
Butler - Cundari
Smith

Berra
MacDonald
Brassoit
Ramo

And voila! A competitive team effective as of 2013-14, without selling the farm to get it. Affords our younger guys another year or two to develop their game, and keeps the cupboard stocked moving forward. It may seem farfetched to some, but more likely than some I've seen proposed here on hf lol

My turn. I'm going to preface this by stating I'm going to limit myself to two trades, and two UFA signings from outside of the organization in an attempt to keep this somewhat realistic.

At the draft:

Trade: Mike Cammalleri and Roman Horak to Columbus for NYR's 1st pick (around 15th overall) Why? Flames don't retain salary, and add Horak to the deal as a result. While I like Horak I don't think he's part of the bigger picture for the club (but I'd retain $2 million to keep Horak)

Trade Lee Stempniak and Columbus' 5th round pick (#153 overall) to Montreal for Nashville's 2nd round pick (around 41st overall) Why? Calgary needs to get bigger, and trading Stempniak frees up a spot for a bigger body on the third line. I don't think Montreal gives us our pick back, either.

Entry Draft:
#3 Overall - Nate MacKinnon (assuming he's available)
#15 Overall - Frederik Gauthier
#18 Overall - Robert Hagg
#28 Overall - Madison Bowey
#41 Overall - Nicholas Petan

Free Agency:

Farewell to:
Roman Cervenka - unsigned, unrestricted free agent
Brian McGrattan - unsigned, unrestricted free agent
Steve Begin - unsigned, unrestricted free agent
Anton Babchuk - unsigned (to Him, money is no object) and everyone else is an unrestricted free agent wishing to sign with The Anton
Leland Irving - unsigned, unrestricted free agent
Krys Kolanos - unsigned, unrestricted free agent
Bryan Cameron - no qualifying offer, unrestricted free agent

Re-Sign:
Mikael Backlund - 3 years, $7.5 million ($2.5 million AAV)
T. J. Brodie - 5 years, $15 million ($3 million AAV)
Chris Butler - 4 years, $9 million ($2.25 million AAV)
Lance Bouma - 2 years, $1.2 million ($0.6 million AAV)
Greg Nemisz - 1 year, $550,000, two way
Mark Cundari - 2 years, $1.3 million ($0.65 million AAV) two way
Reto (Yogi) Berra - 2 years, $1.8 million ($0.900 AAV)
Kari Ramo - 2 years $2.8 million ($1.4 million AAV)
Nathan MacKinnon - 3 year ELC, $3.75 million AAV

and...

Jarome Iginla, 4 years, $20 million ($5 million AAV)

Sign:
David Clarkson, 5 years, $20 million ($4 million AAV)
Stephen Weiss, 6 years, $27 million ($4.5 million AAV)

We may have to add 10% to contract values for being a lousy team.

Abbotsford re-signings:
Brady Lamb, Akim Aliu, Paul Byron, Danny Taylor, Markus Granlund, John Ramage, Ben Hanowski, Brett Carson

Retired:
Miikka Kiprusoff

2013/14 Lineup:

Tanguay - Weiss - Iginla
Baertschi - MacKinnon - Clarkson
Glencross - Stajan - Hudler
Bouma - Reinhart - Aliu / Nemisz / Jackman

Giordano - Wideman
Butler - Brodie
Smith - Cundari / Sarich

Ramo / Berra

Yes, I'm totally giving Reinhart 4th line centre position strictly based off his play in the last game. I may hate him after tonight's game, in which case someone will need to be acquired to fill that spot. And sight unseen, I'm giving Cundari a roster spot too. It's his spot to lose. There will be other defensemen available during free agency for the bottom pairing. Also from within the organization.

I disagree that a full time enforcer is required, but I still think there's a need to have someone who can drop the gloves and we have that in Jackman and Clarkson.

MacDonald cannot be our starter. He's a back up, we're gonna be in trouble if Mac is the starter day in and day out. I pray to god we don't draft a goalie this year and get some forwards.

Note: I found myself agreeing with most of "Stewie Griffins" template so I'm using that one as a frame. Here are my changes.
I'll try and keep this realistic, too:

Entry Draft:
#2 Overall - Nate MacKinnon
#17 Overall - Curtis Lazar
#28 Overall - Robert Hägg

Free Agency:

OUT
Roman Cervenka
Leland Irving
Krys Kolanos
Bryan Cameron
Ryan Howse

Re-Sign:

Mikael Backlund - 2 years, $5 million ($2.5 million AAV)
T. J. Brodie - 4 years, $11 million ($2.75 million AAV)
Chris Butler - 1 years, $2 million ($2 million AAV)
Lance Bouma - 2 years, $1.4 million ($0.7 million AAV)
Greg Nemisz - 1 year, $550,000, two way (last chance really)
Mark Cundari - 2 years, $1.3 million ($0.65 million AAV) two way
Reto Berra - 2 years, $1.6 million two way ($0.8 million)
Kari Ramo - 2 years $ 4.5 million ($2.25 million AAV)
Nathan MacKinnon - 3 year ELC, $3.75 million AAV

IN :
Al Montoya - 1 year, 1.5million, one way
via trade: Ballard + 2nd & 4th 2014 for Butler.

Abbotsford re-signings:
Brady Lamb, Akim Aliu, Paul Byron, Danny Taylor, Markus Granlund, John Ramage, Ben Hanowski, Brett Carson, Berra

2013/14 Lineup:

Tanguay - Backlund - GlenX
Baertschi - MacKinnon - Cammy
Stempniak - Stajan - Hudler
Bouma - Reinhart - McGrattan/Jackman

Giordano - Wideman
Ballard - Brodie
Smith - Cundari / Sarich

Ramo / Montoya

The lineup is obviously getting younger, and this should be the last year Cammy plays for us (deadline trade). There is a good mix of skill: Mac, Baer, Backs, Brodie, Cammy, Stemp. & a quite a bit of grit/muscle: Gratz, Jackman, Gio, Ballard, Cundari, Bouma.

I like the idea of keeping the toughest guy in the league incase any idiot makes a run at one of our young guys.

LOL at Morrissey going 8th overall. That would be a monumental
jump.

Also cant see Petan not getting picked in the 1st round.

Neither did Nystrom,Torres,Malhotra etc but all became useful nhl players no reason to throw away a prospect because he doesn't look to be the 2nd liner he was projected to be.

Was there really Nemisz hype?
Always remembered him being looked at maybe a second liner, most likely third liner that needed to learn how to skate.

May have just been Nemisz hype, because the rest of the system was absolutely awful.

I think it is more important than ever to have a full time enforcer like McGratton. Just because Jackman is willing to chuck 'em, I don't think that gets any respect or elbow room for the younger players or for the vets like Stajan, Tanguay, Iggy? who the kids are supposed to look up to. Building confidence and developing the precious young skilled talent we have will rely on respect for our jersey that will not be gained any other way than fear for at least the next couple of years.

Again, we will need to have a degree of grittiness/toughness (big hitters would qualify as well as goons) like Flames of old to be a deterrent to other teams hoping to dominate us physically and mentally while getting our **** back together.

I think Gm's see that size is less of a factor when you have immense skill.

Isnt he the CHL point leader this year? Guy is going 1st round for sure IMO.

We saw some crazy moments in last years draft, including Pouliot being selected 8th overall. He was originally projected to go around 14-15.

I do agree it's a stretch, but it's definitely not out the realm of possibility.

If Kipper retire, the Flesms will have to "recapture" his previous cap savings of about $4.3M over the next two years.

Abbotsford re-signings:
Brady Lamb, Akim Aliu, Paul Byron, Danny Taylor, Markus Granlund, John Ramage, Ben Hanowski, Brett Carson, Berra

2013/14 Lineup:

Tanguay - Backlund - GlenX
Baertschi - MacKinnon - Cammy
Stempniak - Stajan - Hudler
Bouma - Reinhart - McGrattan/Jackman

Giordano - Wideman
Ballard - Brodie
Smith - Cundari / Sarich

Ramo / Montoya

The lineup is obviously getting younger, and this should be the last year Cammy plays for us (deadline trade). There is a good mix of skill: Mac, Baer, Backs, Brodie, Cammy, Stemp. & a quite a bit of grit/muscle: Gratz, Jackman, Gio, Ballard, Cundari, Bouma.

I like the idea of keeping the toughest guy in the league incase any idiot makes a run at one of our young guys.
This is closer to reality. Don't want Ballard. Brodie and Backlund should only get two year 1.5 million per. This roster will suck again for one more tank season and we trade Cammy, Stajan, Tanguay, Stemp and maybe more during the season or draft deadline. Stock the shelves and go for some free agents in 2014.
