Former #CBJ pick Petr Straka - not signed last summer, put back in draft - is expected to pick from among 5 offers soon,. #CBJ not in mix.
Straka was a 2nd round pick, 55th overall, of Columbus in 2010, but Columbus elected not to sign him. I thought it was a bit of a surprising move at the time because, though Straka's numbers had slipped a bit (64 points in his draft year, followed by injury-plagued seasons of 25 and 37 points) he was a playoff warrior averaging better than a point-per-game in the playoffs.

This year, he was really out to prove Columbus made a mistake and put up 41 goals and 82 points in 55 games with Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL and has been dominant in the playoffs with 8 goals and 17 points in just 7 games! I'm curious who the 5 teams with offers on him are, his agent Allen Walsh has been talking him up on twitter all season-long.

People still listen to Walsh? I thought he pissed off just about everyone during the lockout.

Lockout comments or not, I'd say Walsh is still hugely influential in the hockey world.

Per Eric Stephens, the Ducks have signed John Kurtz to a 1-year ELC (He didn't specify if it was for this season or next, I'd guess next). Kurtz, 23, was never drafted. Standing 6'02", 185 lbs, he put up 3 goals and 7 points in 54 games with Norfolk of the AHL this year.

Really? I thought he burned a lot of bridges back during "the troubles".

In terms of players then, when we're talking about prospects like Petr Straka does Walsh have a decent track record?

Winninpeg
*Jordan Samuels-Thomas (7th round pick, 2009) Quinnipiac
Vinny Saponari (4th round, 2008) Northeastern)

*Goggin (Boston), Marshall (Tampa) and Samuels-Thomas (Winnipeg) started to play college hockey 4 years ago, however they missed an entire season (2 in Goggin's case) for various reasons. They might still have NCAA eligibility thus their respective teams might be able to hold on their rights for one more season.

*David Pacan (Florida), Josh Birkholz (Florida), Cam Reid (Nashville), Brad Peltz (Ottawa) William Wrenn (San Jose), Justin Daniels (San Jose) Drew Daniels (San Jose) and Justin Courtnall (Tampa) left NCAA before graduating. Here is the rule in this case :
If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at
the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide
college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in
the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student
through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall
retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the
fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft.

*Bryce Aneloski (Ottawa) : Similar case as Pacan, Birkholz etc. but different scenario because he was drafted at 20 years old : The rule in this case :
If a Player drafted at age 20 or older is a bona fide college student
at the time of his selection or becomes a bona fide college student
then his drafting Club shall retain those rights until the second June 1 following the
date of his selection, provided that if the Player remains in college
after the second June 1 following the date of his selection, then his
drafting Club shall retain those rights until the August 15 of the
year in which the Player leaves college, regardless of whether the
Player leaves college prior to graduation.

*Brandon Maxwell (Colorado) : Same rule as Pacan, Birkholz etc. applies if he became a "bona fide college student" at some point. If that wasn't the case than his rights were relinquished by Colorado in 2011.

*Drew Olsen (Columbus) : It's already been confirmed that Columbus won't sign Olsen. He is currently playing for Peoria (St.Louis' AHL affiliate)

Hopefully this wasn't too painful to read. In the end, all you have to know is that David Pacan (Florida), Josh Birkholz (Florida), Cam Reid (Nashville), Brad Peltz (Ottawa) William Wrenn (San Jose), Justin Daniels (San Jose) Drew Daniels (San Jose), Justin Courtnall (Tampa) and maybe Brandon Maxwell have to be signed before June 1st or else their respective teams will loose their rights. The deadline for the other players is August 15.

By the way, the Red Wings have 4 years to sign 2011 draft pick Philippe Hudon. Hudon had originally applied to play for Cornell but changed his mind and finally decided to go the QMJHL route.

Stefishen was drafted in 2008 but left the NCAA in 2010 (after 2 years of college hockey). Washington lost his rights in 2012 because 4 years had gone by since he was drafted.

I think he's playing in CIS now, after considering quitting hockey altogether.

Cam Reid signed a contract after a lengthy ATO with Milwaukee, and there's a good deal of chatter that Nashville liked what they saw and will end up signing him before June 1. he's been a good player for the Admirals as a rookie.

I was watching the St. Cloud/Quinnipac Frozen Four game last night to see one of the prospects the Flames picked up in the Iginla trade (Ben Hanowski), but it was his linemate Nik Dowd that really stood out.

I was curious though, is he a UFA this June ala Justin Schultz since this will be the 4th summer since he was drafted?.. Or was that "CBA interpretation" (that allowed Schultz to become a UFA early) closed up in the new CBA?

I don't believe so, as a Kings fan I've heard nothing about a deadline to sign him. I think we have a year from when he graduates, but I could be wrong on that.

yes he could opt out and become a UFA on July 1st, in order to do so he must inform the Kings before June 1st.

I also thought Dowd stodd out when watching SCSU this season.

Hanowski is a long shot, his foot speed hasn't improved as much as it should have the past few years. Best of luck to the kid though.

Well the Flames are going to waste no time in seeing what Hanowski can do.

Yeah Hanowski isn't going to win a lot of foot races. He's got a good shot, smart hockey player, and real high character guy with good work ethic. His playing reminds me a lot of another SCSU alumni in Ryan Malone. Never know.

Hanowski is an interesting prospect. He's a big, strong kid with a really heavy shot. I think he has a chance in the NHL but he's one of those guys that will need a very gifted playmaker feeding him the puck. He hasn't looked like a guy that can create much on his own in the games I watched. I think he was the 3rd piece in that Flames deal.

The top two pieces the Flames got in that 3 for one deal were the Pens 1st and Agostino. Agostino is a nice prospect, imo. He looked very strong in Yale's last game. The skating and shooting looked a little ordinary but his anticipation, hockey sense and playmaking are very impressive.

If UMass-Lowell D Chad Ruhwedel's contract with BUF gets signed/registered quickly enough the college UFA could be in Sabre lineup today.

In any case, the San Diego, CA, native is going to be a Sabre. Played in USHL before going to UMass-Lowell.

Ruhwedel all but confirmed, going to Buffalo. Just waiting for paperwork.

They may have him take his physical and head out on the ice against the Flyers.

What's the worst that can happen? If he does well then great. If he plays bad he helps the Flames cement the first overall pick in the lottery.
