With this thread and the Desharnais thread, you'd swear we were in 15th place. Holy cow.

You're exactly right! I don't know why he is being used as the backup. Or why he re-signed to be the backup. Why didn't he wait til July 1 and go be a starter. Or why teams that need goaltending not climbing over each other to acquire him from the Habs.

He is 5 years older than Price and that would go in Price's favor. But Lundqvist is the man. Can't argue with that.

I agree with the stat, but not being used to compare goalies that play half the time or less with others.

Elite goalies perform well into the 30's ...trading for Lundqvist at 31 is not an issue.

Not pulling a deal like this is pure HFboards mentality ... "lets rebuild so one day Price can be as good as Lundqvist.."

What's the definition of elite? I can never seem to find it. Maybe you can clarify this for me. Please don't forgot to cite your source.

"of the best" or "most select"

50th percentile ...there is a word for that, it's called "AVERAGE"

Ya but I meant for NHL goalies. What statistics are needed?

9/17 .... imagine having 9/17 in an exam at school. I can see it now "mommy, mommy, I got 9/17 in my exam, I'm ELITE!"
That's just stupid. He's 9th among 17 goalies. It's not like a stat that he achieved.

So next time, just say that on 17 students, he got the 9th best mark. Which is probably the class average so say 75-80%.

Anyways, Not really important, but I just thought that your logic was wrong here.

so would you tell your parents "im among the best in class" ..

parent reply: "really? how many people got better than you?"

you: "oh just about half the class"

And you proved my point ... you said "class average" so you agree with me that he is average to above average, not "ELITE".

I get your point that a stat is not equal to a rank but my argument still holds.

well apparently for Price its the number of GP and Wins... basicly what ever stats you can come up with that year to make him look "elite". Although every NHL goalie with a good team like the canadiens could come up with similar stats. As an example Budaj (again) 15 points out of 18.

Niemi - 20-9-6
Fleury 20-6-0
Backstrom 20-12-2
Nabakov 20-11-4

all have more wins than Price and all have a better save % except Nabakov. I don't think anybody would consider Fleury the above "Elite".

You should not only look on SV % for a goalie and specially on a team ours where we limit shots by alot. Let's say we win a game 2-1 and Price has 40 shots against, thats a .975 sv % but if he gets 20 shots against, thats .950 sv%. There's also the factor where in the 40 shots and 20 shots, in both cases, let's pretend, 12/40 and 12/20 were good scoring chances.

Your argument doesn't hold because if we allow 40 shots, it follows that there were more opportunities to score hence Price had to be stellar and save 97.5 % of shots.

Consistently up there ..top 10 in statistics such as save %, being a playoff performer , a big game playa if you will. Must have a couple of amazing years where he is lights out ..top 3 save %, vezina nomination, etc..

I don't get how people can hate a member of their favorite team so much and go to such great lengths to find flaws.

Most fans around the league agree he's a top 5 goalie... Same for analysts and whatnot. Hell I was watching TSN and I believe it was Jamie Mclennan (sp?) who said he was his vezina winner (which I don't agree with, even though he's been very good, a few others have had phenomenal seasons).
