Darcy Regier says starting with Sabres was a condition of Chad Ruhwedel agreeing to sign with team, hence debut today over any Amerks.

“He’ll be on defense,” Rolston said. “I have no idea. We’ll see how that goes.”

How you know the tank is on: sign a guy, plug him in, just tell him to go play.

Too bad he doesn't get to play for an NHL team.

If it is like the situation with Miele, it also starts his contract, moving him closer to rfa sooner.

Bruins fan in peace. I posted over on your guys GDT as well. I watched Ruhwedel a lot as he played for UML. he is more offensive than defensive but development should help him. He has a heavy shot and good speed but no flashy moves.

First, welcome aboard. Others have mentioned it in the thread, but thanks for the insight. If you had to label him, would he be a stay at home D, two-way, or offensive D?

Ruhwedel

On Umass Lowell's squad he was definitely their anchor on defense as well as the powerplay. If I had to take a guess as to how he might develop? He projects to be a two-way defender and leader. He rarely made mistakes this year...and he definitely rounded out his overall game. Aside from his vision , accurate shot and passing ability...his #1 most important asset is that he is just so steady and even tempered. I think having grown up in California...he's just totally chill.

It's nice to have another bro on the team to chill with Ennis.

What would you say his upside is? Bottom pairing defender? Top 4? Depth?

Two way defender with slightly better offensive skills. He was often times this past year on the top year. Long term id say top 4 defender

Gaining the team's trust will be a big step for Ruh, but someone will need to take this kid under their wing.

With about a minute left in the first, his break out pass was easily picked off and it lead to an opportunity for the Flyers...

It will take time.

The big question is: Is Sabres that bad, is Phillys offence that bad or is he that good?

When contract details come out, I'll calculate it.

And as I posted in the GDT, he's stuck in the NHL for this year.
He's not playoff help for the Amerks.

Chris Peters' take on Ruhwedel:
Quote:
Chad Ruhwedel (UMass-Lowell) — D — signed by Buffalo Sabres on April 13 – Forty-eight hours ago, Chad Ruhwedel was playing in the Frozen Four. Today, he’s playing in his first NHL game as a member of the Buffalo Sabres. As a junior, Ruhwedel was one of the nation’s best defensemen. He made first-team All-Hockey East and was recently named first-team All-America. Despite being a below-average sized defenseman, Ruhwedel has proven to be strong in his own end due to his smarts. He also has been a good puck mover, having put up 48 points over the last two seasons. Ruhwedel has a good shot from the point and solid distribution skills. He’s probably not a huge point-producer at the NHL level, but he will contribute. Even at 5-11, 187, he doesn’t get pushed around and can play an NHL-style game. For a lot of NHL teams, he’d be a solid bottom-pairing D, but could find a way into a top four if he can max out his potential. At 22, he is getting a great opportunity with Buffalo to get some NHL action, but expect some AHL time in his future. Maybe not a lot, but to smooth the rough edges, it could help. This is a nice get for Buffalo, which badly needs help on the defensive side in its prospect pool.

I thought he played pretty well for his first game as a pro. He looked fairly calm out there with the puck and didn't make any glaring mistakes which is a lot to say with our defense. He seems like he is a solid skater with good mobility. He also seemed to be in position and didn't lose his man which has been a huge problem for us all year.

I know it means nothing, but he actually looked fairly competent out there. He made some solid plays, didn't look flustered at all, only made one mistake that was described above, and made several good passes including a nice set up for Vanek.

At the very least he'll be a nice addition for Rochester and provide some RHD depth for the Sabres.
