Now that Boston lost tonight, does that mean they must wait until Monday to clinch a playoff berth, or is there another scenario for them?

Heard so far tonight in my house: "Fine! Go take care of that, since you'd OBVIOUSLY rather go play with your numbers than with me!"

(Anyone who doubts that there are sacrifices made to bring this thread to life...)

I'm calling Colorado out of it.

There are 7 teams that have 47 points or higher, and Colorado can only finish with 46. Of the three teams tied at 45, Detroit and Dallas play each other (which would push one to 47), and Columbus and Dallas play each other (same result).

Barring the earth opening up and swallowing all three of those teams, Colorado is out of it.

TWO WEEKS TO GO!

From today....

Florida has been eliminated from the Southeast Division race

Colorado has been eliminated from the playoff race. The way to get there was slightly circuitous, so I missed it on the original daily update last night.

Detroit has lost control of their playoff destiny to Dallas.

For tomorrow...

Chicago can clinch at least the #2 seed in the Western Conference with a win or OT/SO loss against St. Louis. This would also mean that the Northwest Division champion could only finish as high as #2 in the conference no matter what.

Thanks for doing this, I'm a longtime lurker on these boards I always bookmark your yearly magic number posts

One question though, shouldn't Washington's magic number be down to 9 now? Jets have 44 points and 6 games left, meaning they can reach a max of 56 points if they win out. Washington is at 48 now, so 9 more would put them at 57 and out of reach, no?

It should be; it's now been fixed.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Is Florida still in contention because nhl.com has them eliminated from playoff contention?

They could get 46 points and it could be a case where they have looked at the tie break and the Rangers have it with them.

florida can get to 46pts max, 17ROW
rangers have 46pts, 17ROW right now.

they have played one game against each-other so far, but it doesnt count because florida has 2 home games and the rangers once in their season series. Whoever has the best record in their two remaining games takes the tiebreaker (and if florida wins out, that means they knock out the rangers).

new york doesnt play winnipeg, so that cant be it.

as far as i can tell, florida is still (barely) in it. Any point gained by the rangers or non-ROW for florida eliminates florida. Also any win by winnipeg, as florida cant pass them on ROW.

NHL.com has taken the preds and flames out as well. Not sure the reasoning for those either.

Thanks. Plus I'm pretty sure they are both still in according to the playoff tracker.

From today...

Chicago has clinched a top-2 seed in the Western Conference.

For tomorrow...

Boston can clinch a playoff spot with a win or OT/SO loss against Ottawa.

Nashville can be eliminated from the playoff race with:
- A regulation loss against Vancouver (resulting in 46 possible points, which would be surpassed when Dallas and Columbus play each other.)
- An OT/SO loss against Vancouver (47 possible points, which would result in a lost R/OT win tiebreaker against both Minnesota and Detroit)

Calgary can be eliminated from the playoff race with a regulation loss against Minnesota AND a Dallas win against Chicago. (This would give Dallas and Detroit 47 points; they play each other later, which would push one over Calgary's 48 possible points).

Edmonton can be eliminated from the Northwest Division race with a Vancouver win against Nashville

Dallas can be eliminated from the Pacific Division race with a loss of any kind against Chicago

I think Toronto can clinch the playoffs tomorrow with a win of any kind against the capitals and a Tampa bay regulation win against Winnipeg

Actually it can be any loss for winnipeg (if toronto wins in reg/OT)

They'd tie ROW

But there's no chance they make up the GD tie break

Leafs across 18 losses, their GD is -31

That means if those stats hold true, winnipeg would need to score over 6 goals a game on average in their final 5 over their opponents

I have it as Winnipeg winning the Head-to-Head so a tied ROW goes to the Jets, GD is not applicable anymore.

Feb 7th, Leafs @ Jets -- Leafs win 3-2
Mar 12th Leafs @ Jets -- Jets win 5-2
Mar 16th Jets @ Leafs -- Jets win 5-4 (SO)

the Feb 7 game does not count in H-to-H, Jets take it 4pts to 1

Tomorrow:

Leafs get 2pts by any means AND Jets lose in regulation, and they're in

No, but they can get just a bit closer.

There's three teams at the cutoff line in the West right now: Columbus, Phoenix, and Dallas. Even if Columbus and Phoenix lose tonight, Dallas doesn't play against until Thursday (against Vancouver).

All right, I'm falling asleep here, so I need to get to bed before the end of the last game (SJ-Phoenix, with a 3-0 SJ lead).

No matter how this game ends, the only numbers that will change are those for Phoenix and San Jose. San Jose does not control the #4 spot, and thus cannot relinquish that. Phoenix is on the elimination side of the ledger and is in a three-way tie for the 9th-most possible points, so a Phoenix loss won't change everyone else's numbers to clinch either.

I will adjust this as soon as I can tomorrow, which unfortunately might not be until after the games start. I'll try to do so earlier, but I can't promise.

Outside of this, from today....
Nashville has been eliminated from the playoff race
Edmonton has been eliminated from the Northwest Division race

For tomorrow...
Florida can be eliminated from the playoff race with a loss against the NY Islanders OR a win or OT/SO loss by the NY Rangers against Philadelphia

Tampa Bay can be eliminated from the Southeast Division race with a regulation loss against Winnipeg OR with a Washington win against Toronto OR with an OT/SO loss against Winnipeg AND a Washington OT/SO loss against Toronto

Tampa Bay can be eliminated from the playoff race with a regulation loss against Winnipeg AND a NY Rangers win against Philadelphia AND an NY Islanders win or OT/SO loss against Florida

Carolina can be eliminated from the Southeast Division race with a regulation loss against Ottawa AND a Washington win or OT/SO loss against Toronto, OR with an OT/SO loss against Ottawa AND a Washington win against Toronto

Boston can clinch a playoff spot with a loss by Winnipeg against Tampa Bay

Toronto can clinch a playoff spot with a win against Washington AND a Winnipeg regulation loss against Tampa Bay
