This is true, but teams don't like to Kessel/Yashin themselves.

If San Jose does decide to blow it up this offseason. What would you want from the leafs?

I still feel that the Blues would be a good contender for Thornton's services. He fills a need for them and Perron/Schwartz/Rattie/Picks all would help the San Jose cupboard

Morgan Rielly+

Realistically though, if Joe moves, San Jose is going to want young players with top line/top pair potential, if nothing else. 70 point TWF top centers don't grow on trees.

If there would be a way to trade Thornton for a young number one or two defender (like Shattenkirk, for example) then something like that would work. He'd still command a big return.

I like this one. I'd love to get Nelson somehow, but I'd bet you guys are hanging on to him.

As badly as the Leafs could use Thornton, I couldn't give up a Rielly for him. Thornton is on the wrong side of 30 and by the time the Leafs contend, he'd be 35+ and may not be a 70-80 point player. It would make much more sense for a contending team to chase him. A team like the Blues would make plenty of sense.

How are the Leafs not contending right now? They're in the playoffs at a decent seed and the potential acquisition of Jumbo would make them even better...maybe not Penguins good but good enough to get lucky enough to win it all.

If the Sharks wanted to move Jumbo to Toronto, it would take the Leafs' top prospect not on the roster and a 1st to get them to consider it and the price is likely the same for any team that would be on Jumbo's hypothetical list.

Yes there is. The sharks could probably get more though. This guy would be the leafs best player since sundin left. Big, two way, PPG centers with intangibles don't come for a couple of 2nds

Honestly... not as much as you'd think. Teams were giving up crazy prices at the deadline for depth players, but you look at the deal for Iginla, and there just wasn't the demand to generate "crazy" prices.

This offseason is going to see a lot of teams looking to clear cap space, and Thornton makes $7m. This thread was started by a Canucks fan... who proposed Jensen & Kassian, with no plan for actually making that cap space... that would be step 1.

When you consider the fact that he's 32 years old, there's very few teams with cap space, that will have the appetite to trade for him. You also have to consider what the Sharks want to do -- a full rebuild, or retool. If it's the former, they'll be best served waiting for the deadline.

Because this years draft is much stronger than next years.

A pick in the 18-24 range this year is worth more than a pick in the 15 - 20 range next year if anyone expects us to fall back a bit.

Are you new to hockey? Teams drastically overpaying at the deadline is not a new thing.
And deadline prices don't carry over into the off season.

Even tho Jumbo Joe is an amazing player, I would want the Leafs to pass on him.
He is too much older than the rest of our core. I don't think he would bring us a cup in the 2 or 3 years he was still at the top of his game and considering what we would have to give up to get him we would be worse off once he starts to decline than we are now.

That's complete conjecture but a bit? We've been a lottery team for how many years in a row, and you want to take that gamble on a 48 game sample size? Just not the smart way to play the game IMHO.

Perron + Rattie + draft pick. Though unless San Jose is willing to take on some of the financial burden, i'm not sure we could pull it off. Fact is, young, cost controlled, (potentially) high end players are a luxury the Blues literally can't afford to trade away.
