Week of April 8th to 14th: Sunday Papers

Sunday, April 14th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news :

Note: Stay tuned to @illegalcurve as we will be at the MTS Centre today as the Jets return to practice.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: A little help would be nice. The Jets cannot get any luck. All the teams they have needed to lose, just keep winning or lose in OT or a SO. Check out the records in the last 10 games of the teams the Jets are chasing (Capitals are 8-1-1, Islanders 7-1-2 and Rangers 6-3-1). All Winnipeg can do is keep their three game win streak going. The Jets game in Washington (Tuesday, April 23rd) could have massive implications if all the teams keep winning this week.

Winnipeg Sun: Hockey in his blood. Despite his well known last name, Ryan Bowness is someone Jets fans are probably unfamiliar with. Kirk does a bio on the Jets’ manager of hockey operations.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

The Telegram: It’s official – IceCaps ousted from playoff contention. Such is life in the AHL, where your team dynamic can chance overnight. The team that made it to the Conference Finals last year, won’t even get to the playoffs this season.

The Telegram: He’s Glenn Stanford’s right-wing – Driven to improve, says IceCaps vice-president of operations Rob Mullowney. Learning a bit about some of the staff from the IceCaps.

Hockey news:

ESPN: Yale wins first NCAA hockey title. Not known as a hockey powerhouse, the Bulldogs surprised many with their victory yesterday.

Monday Papers

Monday, April 8th Jets news :

Scoreboard watch tonight: Hurricanes @ Bruins | Rangers @ Leafs |

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: It’s all about intensity now. Coach Noel and his team will have to manage this “time off ” and find the right mix of rest and practice during the home stretch.

Winnipeg Free Press: Buff just ‘sitting around a lot’ now. Hopefully the burly D-man can use this perceived slight to motivate himself.

Winnipeg Free Press: News and Notes. Trouba doesn’t yet have a stall. Blake Wheeler feelin fine.

Winnipeg Sun: Weird week for Big Buff. You got the sense that Buff wasn’t pleased that his ice time was reduced but at the same time the team won the game. Could giving him some additional rest down the stretch be just what the doctor ordered to get him back on his game?

CBC: For the Jets, a simple style is the solution. Was it simply a matter of returning to basics for Winnipeg?

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel off day audio. Buff’s ice time. Status of Blake Wheeler. Looking ahead to Tuesday. Ability to have a full practice. Expectations. Scoring.

Illegal Curve: Jets optional skate audio. Ron Hainsey and Dustin Byfuglien were chatting with the media following yesterday’s optional skate.

Jets prospect news:

Yahoo Canada: OHL roundup. Mark Scheifele and his Barrie Colts took a stranglehold on their 2nd Round series with the Oshawa Generals as they won game 3 last night in Oshawa. The Jets 1st round selection in the 2011 Entry Draft had two assists which gave him 15 points (5 goals, 10 assists) and has him first overall in playoff points.

NHL news:

CBC: Red Wings, Maple Leafs to clash at outdoor game. The NHL probably should have waited until after the NCAA basketball tournament was over before they announced the game between the Leafs and Red Wings is back on in Ann Arbor. The University of Michigan Wolverines basketball team are taking on the Louisville Cardinals in the Championship Game tonight in Atlanta so most eyes in Michigan are focused elsewhere.

National Post: Bettman ‘not planning on moving’ Coyotes from Phoenix. Ask fans in Atlanta if they believe that? While I am sure the league would prefer the Coyotes to remain in the desert, that can only happen if they find viable ownership, which hasn’t exactly been easy, despite all the tire kickers.

Globe and Mail: Kings, Ducks hope to stage outdoor hockey in LA next January. When someone says outdoor hockey, L.A. as a location just doesn’t come to mind. Although I’m sure media when given the option of a Winter Classic in California instead of Michigan in January might jump at the opportunity.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show Replay:

Part 1: The Problems with the Jets (Forwards). The Problems with the Jets (Defence). The Problems with the Jets (Goaltending and Special Teams). The Problems with the Jets (Coaching and Management). Interview with Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch. Should Dustin Byfuglien be a forward or a defenseman?

Part 2: Should Dustin Byfuglien be a forward or a defenceman? Evander Kane leads the league in minor penalties assessed. Interview with Anthony SanFilippo of PhiladelphiaFlyers.com. Math on the Jets making the playoffs. Winnipeg Jets Over/Under. Keys to the game: Winnipeg Jets vs. Philadelphia Flyers.

Monday Afternoon links

Monday Afternoon, April 8th Jets news :

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Hoping practice makes perfect. They haven’t had time to run a full practice very often this season, and coach Noel and company were quite happy to be able to put his troops through the paces after they held an optional yesterday.

Winnipeg Sun: Wellwood’s younger brother Eric severs artery in AHL game. The Jets already have had their fill of on-ice injuries of this nature. Kyle Wellwood got the news that his brother had been injured on Sunday in an AHL game. Luckily for Eric he was able to skate off the ice under his own power and has had surgery to repair the injury.

CBC: Inner-city kids get a Jets surprise. Hopefully the kids got a kick out of meeting Slater and Peluso. Nice to see the guys in the community, rewarding young kids who have worked hard for the opportunity.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel post-practice audio. Keeping focus on Buffalo. Having a full practice. Status of Ladd. Trouba fitting in. Any confidence facing teams below them in the standings? Top line finding net again. Approach to team defence, how has it gone after 40 games? Goals For down from last season (focus on power play). Guarding against being complacent. Warning signs.

Illegal Curve: Player audio post-practice. Chats with Jacob Trouba, Mark Stuart and James Wright.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, April 9th Jets, IceCaps, Sabres and NHL news :

Scoreboard watch: Penguins @ Hurricanes | Capitals @ Canadiens | Flyers @ Islanders | Senators @ Lightning

Note: Make sure to @ tweet @illegalcurve with your guess during tonight’s game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal and 50/50 contests. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) our Game Winning Goal (GWG) and 50/50 contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Wellwood #IC5050 $43,255.00).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Two routes, one goal. The Southeast Division crown did seem to be the easiest route to get to the post season but with teams 6-12 as bunched up as they are, it isn’t out the realm of possibility that Winnipeg gets into the 6-8th spot. Especially if the Capitals continue to play as well as they have of late.

Winnipeg Free Press: Swimming in Jets’ stream. For Jacob Trouba this is going to be quite the growth experience. To think just a few weeks ago he was living at home continuing to be a product of the University of Michigan. Fast forward to yesterday and he is participating in his first full practice with his new team. About the only bad news for the Michigan native is his Maize and Blue Wolverines lost the National Championship basketball game last night.

Winnipeg Free Press: For Jets, it’s a defining week. Look at the standings above and the teams the Jets are playing are all below them in terms of position. Can the Jets step on their rivals to move themselves forward? They will have an excellent opportunity to accomplish same over the next couple of weeks.

Winnipeg Sun: D hasn’t improved this season. What has caused the Jets to completely remain stagnant despite coach Noel and his staffs attempt to improve team commitment to defence? Put on your coach’s caps and share your thoughts on why the Jets have failed to improve!

Winnipeg Sun: Jacob Trouba staying with billet family. As he gets acclimatized to the city, the Jets young defencemen is being helped to make the transition with a local family. He looked good in yesterday’s full practice with the team although coach Noel remained guarded as to when he may see his first NHL action.

Globe and Mail: End of the Affair? This seems premature. On one hand it injects the notion of Winnipeg losing a team by not supporting it and also somehow insinuates disloyalty because of booing. I would suggest that fans in this market are sophisticated enough to boo if the team is not putting forth a sufficient effort and it doesn't go any deeper than that.

National Post: Jets catch scheduling break in final push toward playoffs. Who would have thought that having a couple of days off between games would be such a luxury? The Jets actually have four days between games between the game against the Panthers on Thursday (April 11th) and the Lightning on Tuesday (April 16th) which will give coach Noel and his staff time to give the players both rest and practice.

USA Today: NHL power rankings. The Jets are 0-19 on the power play during the past six games so somewhat appropriately they are listed in the 19th spot.

Jets affiliate news:

The Telegram: IceCaps no longer practicing at Mile One Centre. Positively odd situation the Jets farm club is experiencing with their home rink. Could you imagine if the Jets were always working out at the IcePlex instead of the MTS Centre? That is essentially what is happening in St. John’s apparently.

Jets opposition (Sabres) news:

Buffalo News: Miller steps up for Sabres with time winding down. He is the face of the franchise and while there were reports around the trade deadline that he could be moved, the Sabres number one goalie has his team in the hunt.

Olean Times Herald: What will it take to get Regier fired? No punches pulled in this article about Buffalo’s GM.

NHL news:

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Concussion sidelines Penguins’ Neal indefinitely. The latest setback for the Penguins high powered offence.

Globe and Mail: Coyotes sale not imminent. I would suggest that the situation has become untenable, but that would have been the case years ago. It is simply not fair to fans in Arizona to keep this dragging on and on. If you have a buyer who will keep the team in the desert, then sell the team already. How the 29 other owners are not putting pressure on the NHL to stop propping up this franchise is beyond understanding.

CBC: Prime Minister to Gary Bettman – Let NHL stars play in Sochi. Regardless of your politics, you can probably expect that this is a message which would be universally embraced by all Canadians.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Looking to move up against the surging Sabres. As the Sabres are looking to do to the Jets. Should be an interesting test for both teams tonight.

Winnipeg Sun: Playoff atmosphere at MTS Centre as Jets take on Sabres. How many times can we call a game the biggest game of the season? While it still feels early, tonight’s game is of monumental importance to maintain the Jets push for the post season.

Winnipeg Sun: Ready to do battle. Kirk with some news and notes from practice including the beef (and we ain’t talking tacos) between Steve Ott’s fiance and Buffalo News reporter Mike Harrington.

IIHF: From Ust-Kamenogorsk to NHL. Jets Nik Antropov talks about his career, Winnipeg and Kazakh hockey.

Illegal Curve: Dustin Byfuglien and the Trade Market. Richard takes a look at what the Jets might do with the enigmatic defenceman.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel post-practice. How close is Peluso? Having to be ready to go. Focus on Buffalo. What does he look for from his club early on in the game tonight? More even ice time distribution across the board. Benefit to the team. Addition of Wright and Santorelli brings speed to bottom 6. Status of Slater. What team is missing with Slater on the shelf. Getting healthy at the right time.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, April 10th Jets, IceCaps and prospect news :

Scoreboard watch: Leafs @ Rangers | Bruins @ Devils

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: All 4 lines chipped in. To truly have success you need all lines contributing and yesterday the Jets saw what happens when they use all the players they have. The 4th line played well to start the game, drew an early penalty call and played solid defensively. But as the Jets truly needed, the 1st line stepped up and contributed in a big way (Two goals and three assists for the line).

Winnipeg Free Press: Sweet pass from Buff helps Gagnon notch his first NHL goal. To get your first NHL goal and have it be a game winner is special. Especially when it is also the #ICGWG. Gagnon earned his 3rd star status last night, getting the game winner and also playing well on the PK.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets drop Sabres, enjoy winning feeling. All the Jets did was maintain the pace since the teams they were trying to catch (Capitals, Islanders) both won last night as well.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets keep pace in playoff race. Look at the above standings and you can see just how important last night’s win was for the Jets.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets keep rolling. No Little at center, no problem as Jets adjust without their top center. Pavelec doesn’t mind losing the shutout bid. Missing Slater. Peluso skating. Sabres give fan a stick. Random observations.

CBC: Jets destiny rests on out-of-town scoreboard. Probably nothing more frustrating than to come off the ice after playing a complete 60 minutes and realize that all you did was tread water since the teams you needed to lose, for the most part, won last night. The good news for Jets fans is even though the Capitals are blazing hot right now, teams 6-8 in the East are faltering and can be caught by Winnipeg.

Illegal Curve: Dustin Byfuglien and the Trade Market. Defenceman? Forward? Little bit of both? Richard takes a look at what Buff could net on the trade market.

Jets on a Deadline – Jets 4 Sabres 1:

Winnipeg Jets
: Aaron Gagnon, Ondrej Pavelec, Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler.

Coach Noel post-game presser. Following his team’s 4-1 win over the Sabres, coach Noel spoke with the media.

Buffalo Sabres: Coach Rolston, Thomas Vanek and Christian Ehrhoff.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Host Drew Mindell and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Sabres.

Illegal Curve - Jets on a Deadline. Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

As per @BrownScottTN - #IceCaps sign goaltender Juho Olkinuora to an amateur tryout contract.

The Telegram: Dekanich backstops IceCaps to win over Pirates. After a couple of losses over the weekend, the Caps managed to pull off a victory although it seems like it is only a matter of time before they are eliminated from having a chance to make the post season.

Yahoo Canada: Barrie Colts sweep aside Oshawa Generals. Mark Scheifele finished the game +2 with no points and is two back of the OHL playoff points lead. He has helped his team cruise to their second straight series sweep and are now riding an eight game playoff win streak.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, April 11th Jets, IceCaps and prospect news :

Scoreboard watch: Islanders @ Bruins | Senators @ Flyers | Hurricanes @ Capitals | Penguins @ Lightning

(i.e. #ICGWG Hainsey #IC5050 $41,940.50).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Doing the blue-line shuffle again. This is where depth on the back end comes in pretty, pretty, pretty handy.

Winnipeg Free Press: Leaving the past behind. Late season collapse? Been there, done that. The five game slide was bad, but it didn’t kill the season. The Jets have won two in a row, and it will be important to continue that streak if they hope to avoid repeating the past.

Winnipeg Sun: Roller coaster season continues. It really has been one odd season so far and don’t unbuckle because with just eight games to go, fans are in for one exciting conclusion to this ride.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets must take Panthers seriously. Let’s be serious. First, this is the NHL where on any given night any team can beat the other. Secondly the Jets are not the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the last place team in the East. This is a battle of two teams that are both currently out of the playoffs. The Jets to their credit know that they cannot afford to take any of their remaining opponents lightly.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets notebook. Paying attention to the standings. Out of gas due to the wear and tear of the shortened season. Eric Tangradi just that close. And some additional notes.

National Post: Workhorse Ondrej Pavelec keeping Winnipeg in playoff hunt. He spoke about this a few weeks back and indicated he didn't want to continue to be asked about playing too much or needing time off. As far as he was concerned he would be happy to play every day. And considering how critical he has been to this team's success, that is probably a good thing.

Jets affiliate news:

The Telegram: IceCaps beat Pirates 4-3. It is a shame that St. John’s didn’t get hot earlier. Carl Klingberg finally broke his seven week scoreless drought and got the game winner to boot! Congrats to both Adam Lowry who got his first professional point (an assist) on a goal by Vinny Saponari who scored his first AHL goal.

Opposition (Panthers) news:

Miami Herald: Florida shaky on special teams. See that headline should be singular since they are only poor on their PK. The PP currently ranks sixth in the league, which is something the Jets could only dream about.

Sun-Sentinel: Time is running out. At this point the Panthers are just playing out their season but they still have pride so Jets won’t expect to see this kitty rolling over and playing dead tonight.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Edmonton council votes in favour of proceeding with new Oilers arena. Not much of a surprise that this finally got done.

CBC: Ilya Bryzgalov’s Greatest Hits. Some real gems from the Philly netminder. Surprised his love for Winnipeg and parks didn’t make the list.

NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Replay:

Replay: Eastern Conference Playoff Picture, Western Conference Playoff Picture, Interview with Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province, Break it Down: Florida Panthers Penalty Kill, JS Giguere’s comments about the Colorado Avalanche, Six Things We Learned This Week, Prospect Pulse: San Jose Sharks, Over/Under, Keep Your Eye On.

Friday Papers

Friday, April 12th Jets and prospect news :

Scoreboard watch: Senators @ Devils

Jets news:

George Parros appreciated the chant last night:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets pound Panthers 7-2. Just what the doctor ordered. The Jets have really found their goal scoring the last three games (15 goals for, 4 against), punctuated by last night’s seven goal outburst.

Winnipeg Free Press: Refusing to roll over and accept futility. The Jets are doing what they need to do. Not only are they beating teams below them in the standings that they need to beat, but they are stepping on the throats of those opponents. A few days to recoup and then back to the grind next week when they will have a better idea of where they stand in the East.

Winnipeg Free Press: Making a real run at it. Better late than never. The five game losing streak put them behind the eight ball (or eighth spot) and it doesn’t help that all the teams they need to lose continue to win, but all the Jets can do right now is do what they are doing, which is beating everyone who shows up to the not so friendly confines of the MTS Centre.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets take time to do a little happy dance. Punctuated by Chris Thorburn coming to the Jets dressing room to do audio and yelling “I got this” to the rest of the Jets in the room. But they know that they could only spend a few minutes savoring that victory before the reality of the scores from other NHL games set in and they knew that they merely were treading water and not gaining ground.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets fans to get licences quicker quicker. Good news for fans who are eager to get the plates for their cars or motorcycles.

Winnipeg Sun: Prom night for the Jets. While it was the type of period that gives coaches a fit, the first period back and forth action was quite enjoyable for fans used to a less run and gun style of pace.

Winnipeg Sun: Winning is nice — but not enough to earn Jets playoff berth. Cannot be anything more deflating than playing solid for 60 minutes, winning decisively and then realizing you haven’t made up any ground in the race.

Winnipeg Sun: Bryan Little is black & blue — & red-hot all over. What can be said about Little. A lot. He has been sensational the past few games, making passes that are simply perfect, despite pain in his hand following a Ron Hainsey slapper the other game.

TSN: Jets win third straight continuing success at home. Talk about streaky. Lose five. Win three. Unfortunately the former streak has meant that the Jets need to ensure the current streak continues until the final game to ensure a chance at post season play.

CBC: 5 thoughts as Jets head into 4-day vacay. Covers maintaining momentum, being outside the line, Southeast showdowns, return of offence and power play pains.

Jets on a Deadline – Jets 7 Panthers 2:

Winnipeg Jets: Ondrej Pavelec, Andrew Ladd, Chris Thorburn, Evander Kane and Grant Clitsome.

Coach Noel post-game presser. Following his team’s 7-2 win over the Panthers, coach Noel spoke with the media.

Florida Panthers: Coach Dineen, Quinton Howden and Tomas Fleischmann.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Host Drew Mindell and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Panthers.

Jets on a Deadline. Game recaps, post-game audio, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets prospect news:

Hockey’s Future: Jordan Samuels-Thomas having dream season with Quinnipiac. Including a berth in the finals for the 7th round selection of the 2009 draft by the Atlanta Thrashers as he will be helping his team to take on Yale.

Fun Facts about Winnipeg from the Panthers Fox Broadcast:
Funny to hear the guys chatting about the Pegs' love of slurpees.

Testing - The post didn't work when I hit publish. Unusual. Of course no more unusual than me talking to myself in this post. ha.

Jets have the day off. Tomorrow is the practice for people on the Waiting List I believe. Will have audio from there.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, April 13th Jets, affiliate, prospect and NHL news :

Scoreboard watch: Rangers @ Islanders | Lightning @ Capitals

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 today as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news starting at noon until 3 pm. Guest: Chuck Gormley (CSN Washington) and Damian Cristodero (Tampa Bay Times)

Note II: The Jets have the day off today.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Playoffs hurt, are hard… and Buff can’t wait to get back. When you’ve been a champion the desire to repeat for some players is massive incentive. Dustin Byfuglien wants to show this team what the post season can be like and he has been a major force in moving the Jets towards the promised land.

Winnipeg Free Press: Hunger pains. Check out that list of players who have never had the chance to play in the playoffs. Pretty long list. While the Jets know it is going to be difficult to get into the dance, they sure want to get a ticket.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets take some needed R & R. They now get to sit back, relax, recoup their energy and watch other teams play catch-up, although the Jets will be hoping that is just in games played and not in wins.

Winnipeg Sun: Time to rest. 42 games in 83 days. The Jets have finally finished the sprinting portion of their season and now get to rest for a few more days before game number 43 on Tuesday.

Winnipeg Sun: Redmond ready for takeoff. Simply unbelievable that the young D-man is ready for action once again. Coach Noel feels he will need a solid week of practice so we could possibly see him for the road trip. Paul also covers the Jets picture day, Gagnon scoring in bunches and a rested bunch of Jets.

Winnipeg Sun: Panthers’ broadcasters were right – Winnipeg Slurpees are different. As a recovering slurpee addict (June 13th, 2011 being my last, man I miss them) I can attest that the slurpees in Canada, and specifically in Winnipeg are vastly superior than anywhere else. In case you missed it, Steve Goldstein and Bill Lindsay from Fox Sports Florida took some time out from the Jets blowout win to go over some fun facts about Winnipeg, including our obsession with everyone’s favourite frozen beverage.

Globe and Mail: Claude Noel worked hard for his stripes. An interesting read on the Jets always quotable head coach.

NHL.com: Twelve pressing questions for season’s final weeks. Question 10 pertains to the Jets and whether they are peaking at the right time.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

VOCM: IceCaps filling a truck with food. St. John’s has teamed up with Purolator to fight hunger in the city.

OHL: Eastern Conference Finals set. The Belleville Bulls and the Barrie Colts will be doing battle starting on Friday, April 19th. Why this matters is that two Jets prospects will be going head to head as 2011 5th round pick Austen Brassard faces off against fellow 2011 1st round selection Mark Scheifele. As Homer J. Simpson once said “Fight, Fight, Fight for your parents (insert Jets fans here) love”.

College Hockey News: 2013 CCM Division I All-Americans announced. Jacob Trouba of Michigan cracked the West 1st team and Juho Olkinuora of Denver was on the West 2nd team.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Logistics thorniest issue for NHL and Sochi Games, Fasel says. Fans really aren’t overly interested in hearing about logistics. They want Canada vs. USA. That is what truly matters to fans.

CBC: NHL, NHLPA team with You Can Play to combat homophobia. Sad in this day and age that this is even a newsworthy event. Both the NHL and NHLPA deserve major kudos for being at the forefront of professional sports leagues getting involved. Many players are behind the You Can Play initiative led by Flyers scout Patrick Burke. Check this video which is just one of many showing support (although this one features Dustin Byfgulien and Tanner Glass, players Jets fans are familiar with) for the You Can Play cause.

I've never met a single person who regularly reads the Sun and isn't simple minded.
