Orpik - Could still be a top 4 dman. Signed for one year at 3.75m
Kennedy - RFA rights (assume he'll sign with your team for at least a qualifying offer)
Jeffrey - RFA rights. Same thing, assume he'll sign for at least a qo.

Two former great Greyhounds . I'd trade a 3rd for Kennedy.

These are cost-cutting measures. The Pens would not want to take back salary.

I'd take Orpik on the Leafs. Uncle Randy would like his physical style.
I wouldn't sell the farm for him though and I'm not sure the Pens should be moving him with the questions surrounding their defense.

actually there are very few questions on our defence (well I suppose thats the wrong way of wording it. we have many options I guess is what I mean)

Despres Letang
X Martin
X Niskanen
is how we are right now and if we get rid of Orpik we still have Engelland and Bortuzzo and could re-sign one or both of Murray and Eaton. We expect Duomolin to be called up shortly and if Harrington impresses he could get a chance.

Orpik has been our worst defenceman (compared to role at least) in many games. he looks good on occasion primarily with Martin or Letang who can cover him when he gets out of position due to attempting hits.

All 3 would be moved to save salary, so only picks/prospects coming back.

I doubt Jeffrey will be moved as he's a good spare forward to have and he's cheap.

Kennedy probably shouldn't cost too much...mid-rounder should do the trick. He's having a bad year, but he's been a good third liner for a good time now and he's still young. He's always been incredibly streaky so he's due for a good stretch...but that's going to be more difficult to get from the 4th line.

Orpik...someone will overpay for that empty husk of a man. If he is put on the market I'll be shocked if he doesn't fetch at least a 2nd rounder. Honestly I think getting out of the system will do wonders for his game.

The Murray and Regehr deals this deadline set the value for Orpik, AFAIC. A couple 2nd rounders, or comparable return.

Orpik has declined the last few years, but he's a physical vet with a Cup pedigree, and those guys are always valued highly. He could get rejuvenated with a change of scenery.

Off-season trades are a whole different beast than deadline deals.

FWIW I'd expect a 2nd and another pick if Orpik is indeed dangled in the off-season. Something ranging from 2 2nds to a 2nd and a 4th. I don't expect Orpik to fetch a 1st at this stage of his career...mostly because the teams that would likely be willing to offer up such a pick are going to be competition. Orpik would likely be most appetizing to teams building for next year or teams trying to round the corner for next year (he makes sense for a team like Edmonton, for instance).

Hopefully we'll see just how different they are for Orpik this summer, haha.

nah i dont think you can compare this years deadline to next years free agency period.

they are actually polar opposites of each other.

This deadline every single team had cash to spend, so prices were inflated.
This offseason almost no teams will have cash to spend, so prices will be greatly deflated.

Orpik likely will return half of this years deadline value, maybe even less.

Our cap situation is fine. But I wouldn't be adverse to moving one or two.

Orpik is still a very good skater as well, which may give his value a bump in comparison with those two.

It's not fine if we want to field a full roster next season.

Money is going to have to be shed somewhere, and Orpik isn't playing like a $3.75 million defenseman and is a UFA after the season. Kennedy is the other easy shed since his place on the roster was deemed redundant with the Jokinen acquisition.

Bingo. Just saved me some time.

Yep. I could see a team like Tampa being interested in him, and they have an overabundance of good young forward prospects that would interest the Pens.

Any interest in a late 2014 pick for TK's rights?

just like Morrow and Murray sucked. there's a reason nobody here is a GM. perceptions like what you posted are one of the big reasons.

Im sure Shero would. With the addition of Jokinen, Kennedy is a goner

Would be a 7th; our 6th is in the hands of the Rangers after the Gaborik trade.

He's at least scored in the past, and we've had such good fortune with Letestu that, y'know, TK might be worth trying.
