If Valeri Nichushkin plays LW and Voracek plays RW, then this is not a problem.

In reality, the Flyers do not have a ton of depth at LW. Also, don't take this as a criticism-- until moments ago I did not know that Valeri Nichushkin played LW.

It would be a solid pickup for the organization, should they want to go down that road.

The whole #1 winger of the future is a foolish tag anyway. I've never heard that phrase before. There's two wingers on the first line.

Anyway Nichuskin is a LW'er but he looks really comfortable coming down the right wing as well, so he could play either side in my opinion. He has a much higher upside than Jake. He's bigger, faster, and has a better shot. Just wait until his fills out.

If you could liken these potential top 10 prospects to a current NHL player, who would it be? Obviously other guys could go in the top 10, and there are only 8 names here, but it seems likely that these guys represent 8 of the first 10 names to go off the board).

A. Barkov
J. Drouin
S. Jones
E. Lindholm
N. Mackinnon
S. Monahan
V. Nichushkin
D. Nurse

Wow. I just watched some highlights of Nichushkin. He is a great skater. He looks a bit like Voracek. Great speed and power in controlling the puck.

A. Barkov
J. Drouin
S. Jones
E. Lindholm
N. Mackinnon
S. Monahan
V. Nichushkin
D. Nurse
A. Barkov - M. Koivu
J. Drouin - C. Giroux
S. Jones - N. Lidstrom
E. Lindholm - N. Backstrom
N. Mackinnon - S. Stamkos
S. Monahan - J. Toews
V. Nichushkin - E. Malkin
D. Nurse - C. Pronger

These are not my opinions. I found most these comparisons from articles. They are just based off playing styles not projections of how they'll end up.

Personally I'm horrible at comparing players to NHL players although I do like the Giroux/Drouin comparison. I'm sure there's posters on here who can give their opinions on these guys.

Jones - Seabrook
Lindholm - P. Bergeron
Mackinnon - N. Backstrom (mackinnon is nothing like Stamkos)
Nichushkin - Benn

Nicklas Lidstrom. My phone must have auto-corrected it.

Yeah, I know who you meant. Just wanted to bring it to your attention. If only the Flyers could hit on the next Lidstrom...

Jones is a lot more dynamic than Seabrook. There really is no true comparison for Jones that I can think of. He's a whole bunch of guys rolled into one.

MacKinnon lacks Stamkos' shot (which is one of the best in league) but he's got a similar body type, similar skating ability, and is a right handed centerman. While he'll probably never be the goal scorer Stamkos is (again who is?) there are quite a few similarities actually.

Nichushkin doesn't have that sandpaper to his game that Benn has. While Malkin is a lofty projection, they do have similarities. I don't think Nichushkin will be the playmaker Malkin is and he's not a true centerman, but the way they lug the puck as big men is incredible. From a physical standpoint, I don't think Malkin is as far off as one might think.

From what I've read Barkov has a much higher ceiling than Koivu offensively. Button said that he was better than Koivu in the FEL during the lockout and he was 17 years old at the time.

I disagree with the Jones comparison to Lidstrom

Jones is much more comparable to Pronger than Nurse IMO

Not sure I see the snarl in Jones of a Pronger. Weber may be a more appropriate comparison imo.

I wonder what Nichushkin could be drafted and he could buy out his deal at the 2/3 rate the KHL requires and the flyers give him a contract with an easily obtainable bonus to 'reimburse' him.

There were rumors of the Capitals trying this with Kuznetsov, but his contract is much larger than Nichushkin's contract.

ninja edit :

Sounds like his contract is around 3 years @ 300k per
600k over the next 2 years bought out at 2/3 rate is 400k

Wouldn't the KHL and his team have to sign off on this? I can't see them willingly letting him go to the NHL before his contract is up.
They offer these kids longer terms for this exact reason.

He was very close to going the CHL route this summer. I believe him and Moncton were very close to a deal that would have had him go 1st overall in the Import Draft. He signed the KHL deal though a day or two before the Import Draft.

The KHL seems to have two ways to get out of a contract early.

First is mutual termination and the second is a player buyout. I don't believe the team can really stop the latter. I know Washington was trying to get Kuznetsov to do it

What teams at the bottom of the standings think about taking Mackinnon over Jones?

Calgary and Carolina could go either way. Carolina I could actually see taking any of the top 3.

Colorado would most likely pick Jones.

I think Calgary would most definitely take MacKinnon to be the new face of the franchise down the middle after missing out on the ROR offer sheet.

Colorado passing on Jones would be nearly as surprising as us passing on him imo.

Florida and Carolina are probably pretty close to toss ups.

With our luck if we draft a Russian, Putin will decree no Russian hockey players are allowed to go to the U.S.

He's already banned U.S. families from adopting Russian kids due to a political tit for tat with the U.S that keeps expanding....
