For me I'm also looking at Hall, Ebs, Nuge, Yak and JSs development as well. They still have development ahead of them. If we continue to lose we could be stunting their development also. Will they get frustrated with the losing and stop caring? Will they learn what it takes to win with so many years of losing? Will long term team chemistry be affected by the constant losing (year after year)? I always felt Rick Nash's development was stalled because the constant losing. Good player but his showing his first few years and the skills he had made it look like he was going to be so much more than what he became.

Then that's something that management needs to be held responsible for. We can't be drafting based on what a team needs this season. You draft BPA with an emphasis on who will be the best long term career with respect to your team. Hall and Eberle are locked up long term while the rest of the young guys will be RFA's. They aren't going anywhere. The only person I would worry about is Justin Schultz.

i have not seen this guy play outside of the WJC, so i really don't know the answer to this question... does anybody know if he *plays* big, or just *is* big? is he a physical player at all?

I voted Nurse but I'm having second thoughts. If the Oilers drafted Monahan and signed a stop gap #2 center for one year this summer they could afford to package Gagner for a defenseman. Monahan steps in for the 2014-2015 season and is a better fit as a 2 center than Gagner plus we get a proven defenseman which we need.

I'm a Nurse guy but wouldn't have anything bad to say if we took Monahan if that makes sense.

Monahan has pro-level defensive play already, but it's not like he's going to come in and be ready to play 2C right away though. I hope people aren't expecting that - in 3 years he probably will though. Working him in as a 3C is doable next year IMO very similar to how Couturier slotted in a year ago, and I'd expect similar results.

He is a power forward with skill. I dont know if he crushes people with big hits or is a defensive force or anything. From what little Ive seen I would say no, but that is a small sample size.

He is good on the boards and in the corners and drives the net hard, strong on the puck and tough to defend.

Still has two more years on a contract in the khl so he isnt coming here anytime soon.

Wow at Nichuskin over MacKinnon.

Didn't he play center for a while? If we drafted him and could convert him back, that wouldn't be so bad.

I'm surprised how high Horvat jumped on ISS, and Eric Comrie continuing to fall down the rankings, might make a nice steal later in the draft.

Eric Comrie's hip injury is going to scare a lot of teams away after Mike's chronic hips problems.

Hips are odd for goalies. Emery has come back very well from hip surgery. Dipietro and Cloutier, not so much. Speaks to mental toughness too though.

Monahan or Barkov, plus firing Tambo, would be an amazing summer.

If we continue to fall, and that's the range where we draft... frankly, I like any of those options...

Monahan out of those. But Barkov over Monahan. I still have my hopes that MacKinnon falls to us.

Monahan is looking more realistic by the day.

The way Zadorov and Nurse are climbing though it makes me wonder about them.

My realistic wish list remains..

1. Barkov
2. Monahan
3. Nurse
4. Zadorov

Judging by todays press conference, I have a feeling that the Oilers will not keep their first round draft pick this year..

I think the best player in the draft is going to be Drouin. THe kid has amazing skill. Jones will be a very solid D man, but people think he is the next pronger, he isn't. Makinnon will be a disapointment, doens't have the vision.

We won't get any of them so its all good. I hope we end up with Monohan. He will fit in with the oilers. Hope the flames get Makinnon.

It would be stupid of them to trafe their 1 st rounder as it could be what they need like Monahan, Barkov or Kujawinski. MacT doesnt like Gagner and Im sure hes going to get traded as well as Hemsky. Ill be pissed if they trade any if the big 5. Thats their core for years to come

Awesome review of Monahan.

"He's one of the best junior players i've ever seen on the draws in his draft year. He's automatic almost"

"Great wrist shot. Excellent hockey sense."

"He's a power forward in the making for the National Hockey League."

I agree the odds of the Oilers trading their 1st away probably went up with MacT being hired.

He'll probably be more prone to making a big bold optics move and that 1st is a very valuable asset.

Personally I think they should NOT trade away that pick and simply use it to pick an elite prospect. They ought to address other roster needs in other ways than throwing away that valuable asset. Trading the pick is an "easy" move that doesn't require the same amount of effort as actually making other deals without giving up a potential star who will grow and be with the team for years to come.
