Anton Volchenkov after buyout (UFA)

Anton Volchenkov has had a few very good games this year but the majority of them have been pretty awful for him. He has a cap hit of 4,250,000 for the next 3 years....Devils can't justify tying up that cap space in someone on our bottom pair

Upside:
Good shot blocker
PK specialist
Loves to hit
Loves to put his body on the line

Downside:
Hardly any O ability, roams quite a bit
Caught out of position
Bad turnovers trying to clear the zone
Traffic cone...nothing is worse than hearing "Volchenkov is the lone Defensemen back"

What do you think your team would give him in terms of AAV and contract length

The Oilers can use him if they part ways with Peckham and Fistric. Only for bottom pair though, so 1.5 million, max.

Something tells me if he became a UFA Carlyle would want him.

WSH with their horrible PK and a top-2 LD need would fit him.

I don't think we have any room, unless we ship-out or let a couple of d-men walk as UFA's this offseason.

We have: Phaneuf, Gunnar, Liles, Franson, Gardiner, Fraser, ROB, Holzer, Kostka, and Rielly who will all be fighting for a spot in our back-end next year.

Volchenkov could likely be a nice uprgrade over Fraser or ROB, but he'll likely be much more expensive, and both our guys have proven they fit well in our system.

He'll probably get somewhere in the 2 million dollar range depending on term, I don't think from the Leafs though.

IMO volchys game is better suited for the western conference and a team that plays a style allowing him to work.his strengths which are shot blocking and throwing the body around (both of which can lead to him getting outta position)

Calgary offers 1 year 3 million. Most likely running with unknowns Ramo and Berra and perhaps MacDonald getting a pk specialist would be a huge help.

I agree, there are too many locks going into next season. Carlyle already seems to have a hard time getting Gardiner into the lineup and next year Rielly will make the team out of camp. If anything, someone will probably need to be moved, not brought in. Liles most likely.

I still wonder why Habs have not try a Kaberle - Volhenkov trade at the deadline

I'm 100% sure volch is an upgrade on Holzer, Kostka and ROB although ROB has been solid since coming from the avs

Majority of our D core is not signed though and he seems like the kind of guy RC would like on his team. Not that I am advocating we go after him but he seems like the kind of guy Carlyle would love on his team.

well then if you buy him out and we buy out Kaberle I see him come to Montreal ... Having Makov Emelin Volchekov (the red trio) Gorges Subban Bouillon Diaz ... Tinordi and Beaulieu wait another year in Hamilton to grow a bit more with Pateryn Dietz Nygren Didier Benett Ellis. Anyway in 2014-15 exept Gorges the whole D-corp will have to be signed.

He's still a serviceable NHL player, but any GM signing him to a deal longer than two years needs to be fired on the spot.
