WHy? Gunnarsson plays great with Phaneuf and Frattin has good potential and his NHL ready. He has shown flashes of what he is capable of. Why give up on him in 1 and a half seasons.

I agree, it would be wise to hold onto Gunnarsson. He's playing hurt this year and still has looked decent. Once healed next season he could really surprise and become a cost effective bonifide top pairing defenseman. He's around the age when defensemen enter their prime. Not much reason to trade him unless he in a package to get a Yandle, Giordano, etc.

Im not saying ttrade gunner or frattin I like them both, I'm saying if we feel there is an area we have to improve on they can be used wthout destroying the future of the team

I wouldn't mind trading Grabovski, Gunnarsson, Frattin and even Liles. We have a ton of young players close to making the big club who can easily replace them and probably fit the team better.

Rielly, Gardiner, Broll, Devane, Ross, Biggs, Percy, Blacker, etc.

Gunnarsson is decent, but shouldn't be playing top line minutes. He makes too many mistakes to be a good partner for Dion. Dion needs a really solidly two way guy to allow him to play his game. And we have a glut of 3 and 4 d-men, so I think of the group, Gunnarsson has the most trade value.

I would buy out Liles, trade Komisarek (retaining 1M in cap), and move Gunnarsson + to a team with a older top pairing guy that wants to get younger and dump some salary. Maybe to Phoenix for Z. Michalek?

Liles and Grabo are replaceable, the rest aren't. Frattin is a toss up...he's too inconsistent though. I don't see him playing with the Leafs next year.

Hasn't been himself, but still easily better than Clowe.

Good article today by Mirtle regarding resigning of Kessel and Bozak.

He claims that the rumour is Bozie is looking for something similar to what T.Rutuu got in Carolina last year (19M over 4 years).

Maybe a certain person *cough*ChuckWoods*cough* can shed some of their knowledge on the topic?

I for one would be fine if we got him for anything less than 5M per year...

I think Clowe trumps Horton in other aspects of the game aside from scoring. He's better defensively than Horton by a fairly large margin, and I would say the offensive difference isn't particularly large at all.

Short term no, long term yes.

I wouldn't trust Colborne to fill Grabos spot next year, but I think we definitely DO need to replace one of Grabo or Bozak at one point. I think Bozak is more versatile and would make the better 3rd line C, so IMO at some point, we need to move Grabo. Doesn't necessarily mean this offseason.

Gunnarson/Liles, both are LH defencemen. Same as above, I don't think we could move both right now and have it not hurt the hockey team. But I do think at some point we need an upgrade in our Top 4. Right now, we have Phaneuf, and then a bunch of guys who realistically should be playing as #4s on a good team, but are put in #2/#3 spots. Gardiner/Rielly/Percy are all LH, and longterm should be upgrades over Gunnar/Liles (Percy can play Gunnars role, Gardiner/Rielly are more like Liles). But if we moved them both this offseason, we'd be hurting next year.

Frattin is the only one that I think could be moved right now with little to no impact on the team. Especially with Ashton being NHL ready to fill a similar role.

I agree that those guys are ready to make the jump soon, but the Leafs have to be 100% that whomever is going to be replacing them have to be better. ie. Percy has to be an upgrade on Gunnarsson and Biggs has to be an upgrade on Frattin. If you don't know that for sure, then there is no point in making moves just because. We already know what Gunnarsson is capable of. We know what we can get out of Grabovski and what his potential is.

If it's based on Tuumo Ruutu, I'm happy.

I'd try to sign him to David Deharnais money. Anything more and it'll be a mistake as we have other major concerns on the roster to deal with.

We Need To Talk To Edmonton

This offseason, the Leafs should definitely do themselves a favor and talk to Edmonton about the possibility of snagging one of their big five pieces. If the Leafs have a good run for the remainder of the year and carry some positive momentum in the playoffs, a lot of our pieces will carry higher values. Might be a good time to strike, a la Clark for Sundin...

I think the only one they would move is Gagner because they want to get bigger at center. The Leafs don't need another small center They don't really have the pieces required to grab one of the others, at least among the players they would wamt to let go.

Any NCAA signees likely this year?

Will Nonis look for free wallets?

The only name Google seems to connect with the Leafs is high scoring LW Greg Carey, a Hobey Baker nominee.

Anybody seen any other rumors?

Probably not much. Or at least I wouldn't expect more than one.

Marlies and the Leafs are full of depth from top to bottom anyway, even next year. So not many top free agents will want to chose the Leafs because of the lack of opportunity likely.

Greg Carey, if I recall correctly, was invited to our prospect/development camp last year.

We drafted him, but Andrew MacWilliam is technically an NCAA signing

Really wanted Hartzell. This team is actually very short on depth in the crease. Hoping to grab a goalie in the second round I guess now. Either Jarry or Comrie.

Probably not, which is actually a good thing. One of the reasons we were so active on the College FA market in the past is because we had so few prospects in our system graduating to the pro game.

Now with improved depth in our prospect system we don't need to look for UFAs to fill out our AHL roster.

I could maybe see us signing a center. Our defense and wings are pretty crowded though.

Nonis isn't nearly as big on NCAA signings, I don't know if he's done any in his career.
