As you wrote, I think that KHL will use this (new ice/boards) as standard within a few years.

They're building sports complex called "Катящиеся камни" (better to not translate it to English ), including ice palace for 6500 seats. It should be completed in 2015, estimated cost is 4,6 billion rubles.

In other news Samara will rebuild their old arena, according to the Governor the new capacity should be around 10 000 seats.

Yes. Probably they'll end up replacing Yugra. Just my guess.

Why replacing? Why not a simple expansion?

Really? I thought it was obvious. In the next years every team that has 5500 arena will have to present the new project or be relegated down to VHL. KhM is an extremely small city, and they can't fill their current arena. They have no future in KHL. Not to mention that Yugra is from the same region as Rubin Tyumen. Same goes for NKh. There is no place for such small teams when we have much better candidates - Tyumen, Krasnoyarsk, maybe even Samara.

It saddens me to see how Tolyatti made that huge mistake of building 6500-seater arena. Probably they just underestimated the growth of KHL's ambitions, or they honestly thought that it will be enough. But the construction has been going for so long, that now the mistake is obvious to everyone. Unfortunately for Tolyatti it looks like KHL has moved on and isn't particularly interested, so they have trouble finding money for the team.

I'm not sure that Samara has ever even thought about creating a KHL franchise, but it won't surprise me, just to not fall behind their neighborhood (Kazan) too much.
