Is barkov significantly better than Lindholm and monahan?!
Like if we don't get one of mackinnon or drouin, is it worth trading down to get a high second round pick rather than get barkov??

So get say Lindholm/monahan and high second or just barkov?!

depends on how our scouts feel.. lindholm supposedly has a really high offensive ceiling.

not only that, but is one of the most NHL ready players too. Solid 2 way game. Scouting reports reminds me of a Koivu type center.

With so many games in hand with the teams below us, we could win a couple more games and still have a good chance at a top 5 pick.

top 5 is good, but top 3 has the potential of being an immediate impact. There's a slight but perceptible drop off after the first three, this year.

So is there much difference between barkov to Lindholm to monahan?!

I understand after top three it really drops. But if we don't get top three then does it matter if we get one if those three??

I was never on board with an aggressive tank, but I also never thought we'd drop seven straight in regulation. At this point, I am actively rooting for losses with effort akin to the VAN game. A top three pick would be amazing.

We'll finish top 3 and lose the lottery and end up drafting 5th.

Our first draft ever, we should have had the first overall but we lost the lottery and dropped to 3rd having to trade up to the 2nd overall where according to some here we screwed up and didn't draft Lecavalier even though he was drafted first overall Poile screwed up on that one. Really he should have drafted Brad Richards with that pick, he was available.

Here's an interesting read

actually for some reason we had the #2 pick and lost the lottery and fell to 3

are two teams going to get to move up in the new system?

No, the winner jumps to the head of the line everyone else is bumped down one. UNLESS there is a trade

Thankfully this can't happen, they said that no team will lose more than 1 spot due to the lottery.

I wonder why we weren't supposed to be the top pick, weren't the other expansion teams

brief recent history

So Atlanta was either given or won the Entry Draft Lottery the year after us ... took Stefan
2000, CBJ (Klesla) & MIN (Gaborik) join the league (neither draft first) -> Islanders
TBL #1 '92 Hamrlik (OTT)
2nd '91 SJS Pat Falloon (Avalanche took Lindros # 1 & traded him to Philadelphia)

Has to be the weakest top 10 in recent NHL draft history.

Atlanta acquired the pick from Vancouver who had picked it up from Tampa Bay.

The "Eric Lindros" rule prevents southern teams, or new expansion teams from picking elite talent in the draft.

Does anybody think that Poile gets creative and deals Blum or Ellis + a forward to pick up another top 1st round pick at the draft so we end up with 2 of the forwards in the top 10?

I could also see him packaging something like that (Blum/Ellis + forward) to a team feeling the constraints of the reduced cap

I think we try and trade Ellis or something to move up for Mack, but if that doesn't work we could try moving him for a mid-late 1st, or early second plus. I doubt that package gets us into the top ten again.

I don't think that would get us anywhere near the top 20, much less top 10.

I know Blum/Ellis haven't been as solid as we'd have liked this year, but they're still worth waiting on a little while longer. Their still projects, but so would any kid drafted outside the top 10 or so. Might as well see if they can pan out than ship them off for another shot in the dark.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some movement to pick up another 2nd rounder though.

I think he tries. Doubt he succeeds.

I see alot of folks talking about getting the high pick and then trading down to get a 2nd or something.

The way I see it - there are 4 pretty sure fire great players (as far as any draft pick can be) - Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, and Barkov in this draft. You have to take one if you can get one.

Lindholm is nice, but we have too many nice players already. We need elite.

Look at it this way, would you trade say, Hornqvist and G.Bourque (two nice players) for an elite guy like, say, Patrick Kane or Giroux? Of course you would.

Because that's the difference between good and elite. Between picking a MacKinnon/Drouin/Barkov and two nice players picked further down.

Agreed, but I believe some were talking about that only if we won the lottery, which is a long shot. If we had pick no.1(Jones) then I want Poile on the phone with no.2 trying to get another 2nd. I wouldn't want to move out of the top four though.
