Yea leyland seems to have the starters on a short leash to start out. Probably has to do with the weather and warming them up slowly. Hopefully they start pitching more innings late into games. Even then though it's going to be hair raising when they go to the pen until someone steps up and claims the closer position.

They need to swing a trade or 2 and get some good arms in there. The offense and starting pitching is as good as anyones in the league
I don't doubt the starters will start going deeper with the weather warming up, but we're also seeing Scherzer and Verlander blow through a 100 pitches in five innings. Part of it, I'm sure, is the weather, but it's still going to make the pen look worse than it is. I have to think part of the reason DD didn't go hard after an established closer is that we have a group of starters who should eat a ton of innings and go late into games.

I don't doubt DD will make a move or two, Valverde will get promoted, etc. But I don't think the pen will be as big of a concern as it is right now.

The problem I have with that theory is that the pen is completely unpredictable. Their problem really isn't that they have been over worked, it's that there's no shut down guy in the bunch. Not a single guy to this point seems capable of consistently getting guys out cleanly. It's like Russian roulette with every arm in the pen whether rested or not. It's still early though, someone is going to step up and grab the opportunity and run with it.

I think someone is going to run with it, too (and that Villareal will get straightened out to some degree). the positive side with the pen is that we have a bunch of guys that come in and K people. Their strikeout rates are crazy high. At some point, given less of a work load and time to straighten it out, those K rates have to equal more shut down innings.

Austin Jackson looks like he's going to be a star. His renewed approach at the plate is perfect.

Fielder is going to snap and hurt someone eventually. I'm going to laugh at the poor son of a ***** when it happens.

The Tigers are more exciting than the Wings... this offense is really fun to watch.

Hunter in the two hole was such a huge upgrade. Can't believe some writers were questioning that signing. This offense could be epic good if vmart heats up.

Hunter has been outstanding but so has Jackson...tremendous table setters. Prince is destroying even with V-Mart off to a slow start. Teams can afford to walk Cabrera and Fielder until he gets going.

Yea for sure. They are definitely taking advantage of vmarts slow start. Doesn't seem to matter though. Another game scoring a ton of runs. Lol I'm loving it..

Second best center fielder in the league after Trout. Bats .300, elite defense and has some power with 16 dingers last year. If he keeps cutting back on his strike outs hes going to be awesome, he already is actually.

The scary thing is, I think his power is only going to get better. I see a .300+ BA with ~25 dingers a year in his future. Couldn't have asked for a better CF for this lineup and to have Torii Hunter mentoring him is just icing on the cake.

I was pissed when we made that granderson trade. But, yeah, I was wrong. Thank you, Dave Dombrowski.

Still record only 6-5 and a questionable bullpen.

I'd like to toot my own horn a little here and say that I pretty much nailed that trade:

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...&postcount=314

Granderson would not have had his big 2011 season without the help of New Yankee Stadium, and his 2012 season had a high HR total (again, stadium-assisted) but saw him regress back to normal in many other categories. Career-high in strikeouts, fewest steals since his rookie year, career-lows in on-base and batting average, and only 22 XBH that were not homers. That's ridiculous for a guy that had 23 TRIPLES in 2007.

Oh, and the Yankees have paid him $33.25 mil over the last 3 years.

Even if all you got was Jackson, the Tigers win that trade easily. They also got Scherzer, who has given them a lot of really good innings and will end up netting them either a huge trade haul or a sandwich pick when he's getting close to free agency.

Coke has provided value as well. Schlereth is obviously a bust, but oh well.

I didn't know anything about Jackson at the time and he really hasn't given them the steals that I was hoping for, but the Tigers never run anyway so I'd rather see his bat developing than see him hit .265 with little power and 40 steals.

that link brings back a lot of memories. Still bummed Iorg crashed and burned (released by the org earlier this year). Sizemore tore his ACL again this year. Satterwhite and Weinhardt might both be out of the organization. Turner's been traded. ...on the other hand, we picked Fister up for nothing in a trade with Seattle and Ilitch has given DD a blank check to sign damn near anyone he wants (Vmart, Fielder, Sanchez, Verlander re-upping, etc.). So the Tigers have found a way to win.

You are right, I hadn't calculated today's game in. Early going anyway, but important to get well ahead of .500 and stay there.

I wonder if we'll have to choose between Jackson and Miggy. I figure Scherzer is gone with having Boras as an agent and re-signing Sanchez. Jackson has Boras, too, and I have to think they'll hit the market unless we overpay in a big way.

In a couple of years, if we can turn Jackson into another package like what we got for Granderson, I won't complain.

Kelly playing again? I thought he wasn't even going to be in the orginization anymore and now he's staring as much as Dirks. WTF...

DD is to blame for this one - he knows he can't put Kelly on the roster, because Leyland will start him 3 times a week if he can. I suspect there must be scandalous photos involved.

Dirks has knee problems. SafeCo has a huge outfield. Do the math.

Then can we get someone else than Kelly? He's nice on the bench since he can play literally every position but your backup outfielder has to be a little better than a .200 hitter.

I'd rather Garcia start left field.
