Bottom line; Gonchar was the second most prolific point producer of his era on D, won a cup, and didn't have the downsides that are associated with Housley in his game. If we're going to look at performance relative peers as a justification for the greatness of guys in the 50s or 30s (etc)
Gonchar I see as right about with Housley, on the edge. Both guys could go either way.

Yes yes, cross the streams, reverse the particle flow, we get it.

If you're seeing Gonchar as neck and neck with Housley, you don't know enough about these two players, specifically why people who do remember Housley cringe at the idea that he should be in the Hall in a way they don't react to other guys with very good numbers.

It will be interesting to see how the vote plays out, when the time comes.
that was my first thought as well.

It's hard to compare goal scoring guys with playmakers.

Marty also was an average or below average player until 27 but he is aging better than Iggy is.

Iggy has had a run of better than average, for a top 6 player, goalscorer for 13 seasons in a row.

I guess it depends on what they do here on out a bit as well.

At some point Housley's raw counting numbers are going to get him in.

If he was a forward he would have totals good enough for induction, but obviously not top 10 in goals finishes.

As it is he was a top 10 in assists 3 times with a 7,10,10 and probably has 10 or so top 20 finishes in assists.

He was good enough to play for the US in 4 best on best tournaments.

We all know that he wasn't even an average defensive Dman and that he played on crappy teams for most of his career but there seems to be too much focus on this.

Players make the HHOF for actual production on ice for the most part, not what they weren't.

He sure in the hell wouldn't be the worst Dman in there.
