Got a message this morning from a scout who arrived in Sochi. Hotel is awesome and it's bar is open 24 hours. Be prepared for some crazy draft selections in June.
If you run into any trouble with the language barrier, then just ask. I speak fluent Russian...should be able to give you some hints. all the volunteers working the games speak English though...a few of my friends are working the tournament. Good luck.

Hey Mark,

I just feel Moutrey would have gotten a lot more accolades if he play in Ontario and was seem more. He is a lot more skilled than what he gets credit for. The good news is, he was followed really closley by several NHL teams. One comment that was said, he would have stood even more on a better team.

He obviously would get more views (like any player) if he was playing in places like Kitchener or London. That said, he was seen and scouts are well aware of him. That I know for sure.

Good to know about the volunteers, thanks.

I know my hotel has free internet access throughout hotel. That was helpful last year in Brno. I'm going to do my best to update the article on our website with a few thoughts each day. If there is a gap in posts, blame the 24 hour hotel bar.

Up front looks decent, with another 4 guys from the summer team. Somewhat surprised Kujawinksi and Duclair were not invited to this tourney.

Martin in net was at the summer camp.

Morrissey will be asked to play against the best players on the opposition, especially ahead of Bowey and Theodore.

That Bowey-Theodore pairing has 'clusterbeep' written all over it.

Morrissey and Morin or Heatherington would make a very good shutdown pair IMO.

I also feel, that it's not worth playing a double underager on the wing. This kid needs to play center, he just needs to be insulated by some size.

I'd like to see MacDavid play with Bennett (looked good together in U-17) with a big body on the opposite wing, either a Nastasiuk or a Ritchie.

I'd also put Klimchuk at wing and use Reinhart at C.

It's a pretty solid roster for sure...as noted above Garlent is the only guy I really don't know why he's there.

I think I would rather see Theodore-Morrissey together as an offensive pairing and have Heatherington-Bowey together as a physical, shutdown type pairing.

They probably looked good together because they've been linemates for a long time, if not their whole lives.
Both of them grew up in the York Simcoe Express system and even moved to the Marlboros together and continued to play on the same line.

That's what PP's are for.

I'm pretty partial to a puckmover being paired with a defensive guy, on all pairings, although most of this team are more two-way guys.

I'm not big on Bowey in a checking role.

Yeah, I believe they'll have up to 5 games televised (via TSN draft center podcast).

One preliminary game vs Sweden.

Then they'll follow Canada through the quarters, semi's and air the gold and bronze medal games.

I'm pretty stoked.

--------

fasthockey also has the team USA games, I believe the stream is free too. Haven't checked.

edit* - NOT FREE.

FYI they (TSN) didn't air the gold medal game last year cause Canada didn't make it even though it was on there broadcast schedule, just the Bronze, was pretty disappointed about that, so hopefully Canada makes it.

I remember watching USA-Sweden in the GMG on TSN last year.

Great to see Bigras and Nastasiuk make the team after a tough elimination.

Nastasiuk has been a point per game player in the playoffs and could be a huge riser from this tournament if he keeps up the great play. Noticeable improvement from the start of the season. Heart and soul guy with some upside.

Bigras has been on Canada's radar for a while with the Ivan Hlinka team so this tournament should just cement his status as a potential first rounder.

nice to see the underage kids on the scoreboard but way too many penalties.
it always seems that way and something coach Hay has to pound discipline into their heads.
teams like the USA, Swedes, Russians will out gun any throw together Canadian club on the special teams alone.
lessons need to be learned fast.

Absolutely love that IIHF is tracking icetime for this tournament. Hope this is a staple moving forward.

Canada won 4-1

Goals by Baptiste, McDavid, Reinhart, and Bennett-McDowels.

McDavid with the 3 point game. Hello legend.

Sorry...

In another thread someone is trying to tell all the Q posters that the Q and Hockey Canada is moving away from taking any players under 6' regardless of ability. Most of us see this as absurd and said that.. this list further demonstrates that it is all how you play not that you are over 6' tall.

They owned the face off circle, had good distribution of lines .
Very surprised to see how well Bennett and macdavid did with Reinhart
Also a little surprised at how well USA did against the Russians

Canadians always own the faceoff circle in these tournaments.

Not surprised at all about the Macdavid-Bennett combo having chemistry, as jfb392 noted above, these two guys have played together forever. I am surprised that they weren't insulated with a bigger winger (they may very well be, when they face stiffer competition). 3 extremely smart players playing together usually makes for quick chemistry.

I'm more surprised at the Russians beating the USA, rather than vice versa.

Definitely a good start to the tournament for Canada.

Seems like four defence men are logging the big minutes and playing well.
Require much more offence from klimchuk, gauthier and nastasiuk in order to succeed.
The Swiss are going to challenge this team next and no second line is coming forward(no pun) to pick up the slack .
